ATM gave me too much- can they take it back?

Obviously I know the ATM can’t take the money off me, but at the moment I’ve only been charged for the money I wanted, they’ve given me an extra £100. I’ve checked my bank and it says the original amount, not the original
plus extra. Can the bank suddenly charge me the extra £100? I’m panicking because it’ll take me overdrawn if they do. Has this happened to anyone else before? What happens?

Are you familiar with the word stealing ?

misssunshine4040 · 05/03/2024 09:55

I would contact your bank and let them know asap. If you have a branch you can pop into.
I know somebody might say keep it etc but it's not worth the stress

SirChenjins · 05/03/2024 09:55

Can't you just deposit the £100 back into your account so it doesn't go overdrawn?

Mmmmdanone · 05/03/2024 09:56

It happened to a friend. They didn't take the money out of the account as it was a faulty machine and bank weren't aware. If in doubt give the bank a call.

LakeTiticaca · 05/03/2024 10:00

The ATM will show a deficit when they balance up. Deposit the 100 quid in your bank and wait a while. If they don't take it back just keep it

Mrsttcno1 · 05/03/2024 10:03

The ATM at our local post office is notorious for this (so none of the locals really use it now), it does show the amount it gave out on your bank so would take you overdrawn. Just pop into local branch today with the extra money you didn’t ask for/want and give it back.

SheepAndSword · 05/03/2024 10:04

Have you got a post office near you? Where I am the banking branches are 30 minutes walk but there's a post office 5 minutes away so I can make deposits into my account there.

Tbh bank shouldn't really charge you if you go overdrawn as it was a mistake on their part.

AtomicBlondeRose · 05/03/2024 10:04

“Pop into your local branch today” - can’t just be me who is at work for all the (very restricted) hours their local bank is open - if you’re lucky enough to have a local branch at all. Not so simple as it sounds to do that.

SteppingStonesOfDoom · 05/03/2024 10:09

I don’t have a local branch, it shut years ago. Closest one is 40 minutes away and I’m working all day so can’t just pop down. I’ll try calling my bank during my lunch hour

It doesn’t even need to be your bank, it could also be a post office.

If it’s a huge issue thats going to take your overdrawn/incur charges, as a one off you find the time to pop somewhere to resolve it.

AliceAforethought · 05/03/2024 10:15

Just phone your bank and explain.

RoseNy · 05/03/2024 10:18

Can you give someone the cash to and they transfer the £100 into your account? I would happily do this for a colleague.

SteppingStonesOfDoom · 05/03/2024 10:20

@RoseNy i hadn’t thought of that! I’ll check and see if any friends can do it for me, thanks!

I would just keep it and see if anything happens in thr next few days. If they take the payment, you have until 2pm to kove money into the account to stop you going overdrawn. And they may not be able to take it if you don't have enough money

RiderofRohan · 05/03/2024 10:54

Personally I'd give it back, but I'm in a fortunate financial situation.

If I was struggling to make ends meet, as it sounds you might be, I'd just deposit the extra into the bank. If the mistake is picked up, then they will withdraw from your account and you won't be overdrawn. If it's not, you have an extra £100 in the bank!

fairymary87 · 05/03/2024 10:55

This happens to me as a teen, pay it back! Trust me lol

YouveGotAFastCar · 05/03/2024 10:59

Yes. They'll balance the ATM, and it'll show it's short, so they'll debit it from your account. How often it's balanced will depend on the ATM - if it was in a bank branch, it's usually daily/every other day; if it was outside a shop, it'll depend how busy the ATM is, but it'll usually be balanced at least once a month.

Legally speaking; they've got up to six years to recover it from you, but that's extremely unusual.

Deposit it into your bank.

RichardsGear · 05/03/2024 11:02

How do they determine which user got the extra money when balancing the ATM? And what if that user flat out denied being given extra?

SteppingStonesOfDoom · 05/03/2024 11:04

@RichardsGear i was wondering that! Not that I would deny it, but how would they know it’s me?

@YouveGotAFastCar it was In a coop so who knows how often they’ll check it?

As someone who worked in a bank and regularly balanced and loaded the ATM, I honestly don’t think they would ever know this. It could be the £20s got put in the £10s slot and you may not be the only person this happened to. Keep hold of the money, if they request it pay it back.

pallyloo · 05/03/2024 12:06

Put it into your account and wait a week or so then use it, who cares.

secondscreen · 05/03/2024 12:13

Just stick it into your account so it isn't a disaster if they take it back.

BIossomtoes · 05/03/2024 13:43

How will they know which of the many people who drew out cash got the extra £100?

flippertyjibbets · 05/03/2024 13:50

which ATM is this? 🤣🤣
