ATM gave me too much- can they take it back?

Obviously I know the ATM can’t take the money off me, but at the moment I’ve only been charged for the money I wanted, they’ve given me an extra £100. I’ve checked my bank and it says the original amount, not the original
plus extra. Can the bank suddenly charge me the extra £100? I’m panicking because it’ll take me overdrawn if they do. Has this happened to anyone else before? What happens?

I don’t have a local branch, it shut years ago. Closest one is 40 minutes away and I’m working all day so can’t just pop down. I’ll try calling my bank during my lunch hour

That's sensible. They can't expect you to drive 40 mins. They can advise you what they want you to do. They might let you keep it. They would have discovered it anyway eventually.

The machine cant tell who had the extra money, they will just write it off, dont think they are going to worry much about £100.

@flippertyjibbets if I don’t get charged within a couple of weeks I’ll go back and try again and let you know :)

If they take you overdrawn explain that you got £100 out and the atm gave you too much, you’ve no local branch or post office nearby open when you can go to deposit it back but you had planned to when you could. It was their stupid mistake and they should be accountable. Unless you live in a city centre finding a bank to just pop into isn’t a thing! For me in Cornwall so many branches have closed down, post offices are open limited hours in the mornings, even if I could get to a post office (closest bank branch is now 40 mins away), it would be a minimum of a 30 min round trip drive, plus the need to pay for parking. Contacting the bank means hours waiting on a phone to get through to anyone.

Are you familiar with the word stealing ?

Are you familiar with the words unhelpful and nasty?

Op hadn't stolen anything.

I remember a cash machine becoming faulty like that for a couple of hours in my town and people flocked to it until the bank realised (not me I might add!). There wasn’t any talk of people having to give it back because it was the banks error.

Back in the mists of time dh worked on arms, and says sometimes notes get stuck together and the sensors don't count them correctly - like when a printer or photocopier pulls in 2 sheets

I had that at once - didn't realise for several days as trying not to break into note as at time money was tight - then noticed and was very confused initially why I had extra £10 more in purse as assume stuck in purse - but never showed up on statement.

Plastic notes are a bugger for that. I used to help a colleague with cash checking and the new notes always gummed up the cash counter.

If the person refilling the ATM has put the £20's in the £10 slot and vice versa then they'll be getting a few complaints from people who've been short changed. They'll soon work it out.

They are all new looking notes so maybe that’s it?

The ATM will show a deficit when they balance up. Deposit the 100 quid in your bank and wait a while. If they don't take it back just keep it

if the ATM shows a deficit on balancing, there’s no way to show where it went
