How to deal with anger when hungry?

I just don't know what to do.

DH's behaviour has spoilt yet another day out. He gets very cross and angry when hungry but is massively overweight and feels hungry all the time. A handful of nuts or fruit doesn't cut it. It's not thirst - he drinks plenty of water all day.

Today we went to the cinema. Came out, looking for lunch but everywhere was busy. He would not wait if a server said a table would be 10 mins or that service might be slow as busy.

He ended up storming off, buying a meal deal in M&S and eating it in the car, while whinging how disgusting the food was and no wonder he's fat as he always ends up eating bread.

I just don't know how to deal with this. It makes him more angry when I just ignore him. If I sympathise, I get told it's my fault (somehow).

Also, he will feel so much better if the underlying issue is solved and he loses weight, but again this is not your problem to solve.

In order to lose weight, he will have to find a way of managing hunger and cravings. My doctor recommended six small meals a day: b, l & d plus 3 healthy snacks, to keep blood sugars stable, but it takes a lot of organisation and forward planning.

So if a banana won't cut it then it's purely a patience issue. A banana would keep the vast majority of people going for the 30 or so minutes it would take to wait for a table, get order in and get food. If it doesn't then it's not a blood sugar thing, it's a lack of patience. Choose a time when he's well fed and talk to him about it. Doing it in the heat of the moment won't work.

Maybe he needs to pay for a couple of sessions with a nutritionist?

He's not behaving this way because he's hungry. He's behaving this way because he's not a very nice person and needs to sort himself out. It's not your job to fix this. Being hungry makes him angry. Lots of people are like that but they don't inflict it on other people like this. Don't let him pass responsibility for his behaviour onto external circumstances-and don't excuse it yourself. He's a grown up.

I think it's really odd if he's hungry 3 hours after eating a breakfast as packed with protein as you described. It surely can't be genuine hunger or blood sugar dip unless there's an underlying medical cause.

Maybe it's more that he is addicted to eating so the minute the film finished he must have food NOW. It seems like a compulsion if he'd rather buy an unsatisfying meal deal and spoil a trip out than wait 10 minutes for a table for a sit down lunch.
