Beth Rigby of Sky News says they've been reliably informed it's not going to be about a General Election, so what will it be?

So beefing up Prevent and facilitating deportation of those who support proscribed organisations (ie no new initiatives)

Everything else is just rhetoric, and not hugely convincing

I wonder if it will lead to changes to policing - briefly mentioned but not terribly specific

What0nEarthIsThis · 01/03/2024 17:58

How is he proof that racial minorities can succeed? He's a billionnaire and he went to winchester. #bollokcs

Did he just say nothing?

Just said “errr horrible brown people” and pretended to be one of the people.

How does he have the nerve to say all of this after Anderson / Truss / Braverman's comments this week?

Exactly. This would have had so much more gravitas were it not for the ignoring of Braverman, Anderson etc

BarelyLiterate · 01/03/2024 17:58

That was an good speech. Sunak is broadly correct about these issues, but he should have gone further and stated clearly that multiculturalism is fundamentally divisive and has failed. The current situation is proof of that.

One thing was very obviously missing, though. What is he actually going to do about ghettoisation in our communities and toxic & violent extremism on all sides?

borisjohnsonsforgottencondom · 01/03/2024 17:58

Has something happened? I get the message but don't get the method of delivery.. unless something has gone on.

Odd.

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 01/03/2024 17:58

Has he actually announced anything significant here?

What a waste of time getting the lectern out of storage for that.

Downing Street statements are normally for very significant events, aren't they?

What0nEarthIsThis · 01/03/2024 17:59

I think he just said that people who are here on visas can be deported for protesting.

What0nEarthIsThis · 01/03/2024 17:59

HE said he believes in democracy but didn't give us an election, which is a shame.

TakeMe2Insanity · 01/03/2024 17:59

Essentially as a result of the Rochdale protest vote he is sending them all to prevent!

Dotty2dot · 01/03/2024 17:59

Jesus if I have to do that online PREVENT training again I'll launch my laptop into space.

IncompleteSenten · 01/03/2024 18:00

When did prime ministers start thinking they needed to have these bloody speeches over everything.
Tune in tomorrow at 6pm as rishi stands in front of number 10 to describe his latest bowel movement.

It just seems like an attention/ego thing.

Odd.

I think the penny has finally dropped that he isn’t very popular, so he decided to make himself look even more stupid.

AllrightNowBaby · 01/03/2024 18:00

Hopefully he will stop these supporters of Hamas from disrupting our democracy by threatening MP’s

StopTheBusINeedAWeeWeeAWeeWeeBagOChips · 01/03/2024 18:01

Did he just say that we can bomb other countries, those people can seek refuge here, but they aren't allowed to protest the bombing of their countries or they are getting sent back (in all the other waffle he waffled)

RoseAndRose · 01/03/2024 18:01

I wonder who the target audience of that speech was?

Because I really can't see who it would appeal to.

I do wonder how he is going to achieve this.

Braverman will be grinding her teeth.

Someone on here said that the MET police are run by the mayor not the government. So he'd have to get agreement there if that's true.

We'll just have to wait and see.

Indeed …. I’ve lost count how many times now.

SameSameButDeliverance · 01/03/2024 18:03

Apart from the absolute load of nothing in the words, it was a truly awful speech.

Nothing stirring, no emotion, no memorable lines. And so badly delivered - bland, flat tone, zero gravitas. A missed opportunity to really try and LEAD (and I am not a Tory).

CALL A FUCKING ELECTION MAN, FOR THE LOVE OF MIKE.

Nothing as far as I can tell.

Westfacing · 01/03/2024 18:03

Rather odd for a PM to be critical of the result of a by-election!

I thought he delivered that very well and good for him standing up and taking a stance. I doubt labour will like it though.

Mementomorissons · 01/03/2024 18:04

I thought that was quite a good speech. not sure it needed the drama of the lectern announcement, but actually it felt important that a prime minister actually said these things

Delivered well?! Did you watch something completely different? Was Larry giving a speech on ITV?

Cleebope2 · 01/03/2024 18:04

I thought it was an excellent speech. Some leadership from him at last.
