Beth Rigby of Sky News says they've been reliably informed it's not going to be about a General Election, so what will it be?

The term “dog whistle” is becoming ever funnier as it’s always followed by ramblings that are invariably a dog whistle!!!

Knew someone would have a problem with the term dog whistle without actually replying.
So what is he supposed to be reassuring us about?
As it seems to be him and his party doing the stoking up, the trying to divide, and the fear mongering.

Its almost as though saying dog whistle is a dog whistle for some...

Perhaps more pertinently, should we equally condemn the Ottoman Empire? Zulu Empire? Incan Empire? The Arab Empire...? Is it only white people who should've known better, and whose descendants should pay for the actions of their forebears?

True. Although we weren’t brought up thinking those empires were great, whereas that was very much the message around the British empire until really quite recently.

Thank you for this, I have a family member in London who has been on all the marches and says exactly the same, how peaceful they are, how huge they are and how mixed they are.

agree totally with yasai and you. Have been on two and what pushed me to go on the first was Bravermann trashing them for her own reasons. My experience of both showed me that yep she was lying.
I fear for folks outside London accepting Rishi's lies as fact as they can't witness them unless involved.
And Starmer is no better.
No fan of Galloway but he was right in calling them two cheeks of the same arse. Tho his language was rather more moderate.
I'd bet my house that Starmer was lapping up Rishi's "speech" - no doubt he's doing a slight slight polishing of it for his own version when he - very probably - wins.
Shame on them both. Beneath contempt.
I will be marching again. May bump into the ex prison service bod I met last week who it turns out has also been on two.
They are peaceful.

I think it is targeted at the only remaining reliable tories. He’s scrambling for votes now and can only appeal to the far-right who will lap up his anti-Muslim rhetoric.

I am a white, British 40 something. Happy to admit that people would probably assume I’m a Tory.

I have attended several of the marches. They are enormous. Hundreds of thousands when only 30k are reported. No trouble. Absolutely heaving with elderly, young, children, middle aged, teens, you name it. I’m going to be very direct here - I’d say the protests are 60% white British now. i cannot stress how peaceful they are.

The govt thought people would move on. They haven’t. The government need these protests to stop and they are resorting to desperate measures.

if you are considering attending a protest but feel nervous, please don’t. I have never protested before this situation but I have never felt more comfortable. The community spirit is wonderful, I notice it every single time.

people are marching because we are exhausted by watching massacred children, multilated human beings day in-day out and our government are in it up to their necks.

shame on Rishi.

Edited

really disappointing in your please come to our wonderful peaceful marches - you only blame UK government but don’t call on a Hamas ceasefire or for hostage release. Should we not care about all innocents affected ?

If he had ended his speech with he knows what a woman is, half the people on MN would have ignored everything else he said and would have been running to the next GE to vote for him.

Livelovebehappy · 01/03/2024 21:13

90mepo · 01/03/2024 20:52

For me it was a welcomed speech, whether it will actuallly turn into action I’m doubtful.

Agree. It’s only on Mumsnet I see people lapping up the protests. I originally lived in London, and many people I know from in and around London are so fed up of people descending on their streets Every. Single. Week. The protests achieve nothing, only to disrupt people just wanting to go about their business. Nothing will change on the back of these protests, because the silent majority don’t agree with them, and Rishi knows that.

Dotty2dot · 01/03/2024 21:14

That silent majority also doesn't seem to want to vote for Rishi.

I won’t be voting for Rishi, nor will I vote in Starmer. But I’m one of the silent majority. Why would you think that the silent majority are Tory supporters?

Someone has chillingly predicted on X that this speech could be a precursor to him saying it's not safe to hold a general election because of extremism threats.

All manner of conspiracy theory shite gets predicted on X, I would give this one the same probability as the four horsemen of the apocalypse trotting down my high street tomorrow morning.

Still I get that such conspiracy theories can take on a life of their own.

Dotty2dot · 01/03/2024 21:19

I think the tide is turning. I definitely hear more people finding their voice now, and being more vocal about the shit that is currently happening in this country. And Rishi actually speaking out will make people feel that they can voice their concerns. I’m no fan of Sunak, but I’m pleased he said what he did.

Livelovebehappy · 01/03/2024 21:34

Dotty2dot · 01/03/2024 21:29

You mean the Muslim community?

Of course. It’s the Muslim community who are the most vocal about the Israeli/Palestinian conflict? They are speaking out as many have relatives and friends in Palestine, and want a cease fire. It’s right they have concerns, and Galloway has fed into that by previously making anti Semitic comments, so the community have adopted him as one of their own.

1dayatatime · 01/03/2024 21:37

"That silent majority also doesn't seem to want to vote for Rishi"

Agreed the silent majority will be backing Starmer who has also come out in agreement with Rishi's speech.

Who the silent majority definitely don't support are people that disrupt their everyday life whether that be Just stop Oil or Pro Palestinian marches or whatever. And they definitely don't want to vote for extremist politicians of either party who they see as anti semitic or Islamophobic.

True. Although we weren’t brought up thinking those empires were great, whereas that was very much the message around the British empire until really quite recently.

I'm well into my forties now and was never taught the British Empire was great. In fact, I was barely taught about it at all. My education definitely suggested Britain was a bit crap, when did it change? And at what point do we decide we've spent enough decades attacking Britain that we've made up for those decades that we unreservedly praised Britain, so we can start being more objective about Britain?

And although we aren't stating that those empires are great, we aren't condemning them and we certainly aren't treating them as we do 'our own'; what is happening now in Palestine/Israel is the direct result of many, many empires' actions over several millennia from Romans to Arabs to Ottomans to British. Yet we only hear of the British involvement and ignore the actions of the 'brown' colonisers. Any idea why? I really want to believe it's not because we hold white people to a higher standard than non-white...

It surprises me that the young don't protest more. They have been utterly shafted by low wages, high inflation and impossible house prices.

Feb poll, now only 24% of UK people believe that Israel's attack on Gaza after October was justified.
Only 13% polled thought Israel should continue it's military action in Gaza.

The Tory Govt is not representing its public on the Gaza issue. It it is not respecting democracy which is one reason why frustrated people march or vote Galloway.

Noicant · 01/03/2024 21:41

Galloway supported Saddam, a man who actually tried to commit genocide against kurds and Marsh arabs. He thinks that having sex with a woman while she is sleeping is not actually rape. He is most definitely an anti-semite.

I understand that our MP’s are a shower of shit but he is really scrapping the bottom of the barrel. I mean he really is the skid marks on the pants of humanity. My DH joked that Farage must be fuming that he can’t seem to get elected as an MP but Galloway managed to find useful idiots to elect him as an MP 5 times.

Dymaxion · 01/03/2024 21:42

My education definitely suggested Britain was a bit crap, when did it change?

I always got the impression from my education that British Governments were crap, not Britain.
