What are these insects in my house? Freaking me out!

I've spotted a couple of little worm like insects in my house. They're not worms as have lots of little legs. They're really thin and a few cm long. Anyone know what they could be or how they're getting in?

I hate anything like this so it's really freaking me out!

Please also no pictures as they make me feel sick to look at!

Centipede maybe?

Millipedes? They're dark in colour, totally harmless

charlie10k · 01/03/2024 16:03

Silverfish?

Donotgogentle · 01/03/2024 16:03

Usually eating up less harmess insects/moths.

Might not be that though, hard to say without a pic.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 01/03/2024 16:05

They’ll be carpet beetle larvae. Sometimes known as woolly bears as they have lots of legs ( I think they’re legs) kind of browny cream colour.

TraitorsGate · 01/03/2024 16:06

They come up plughole, in from the cold and rain, try and post a pic, they are more frightened of you.

SolverofPuzzles · 01/03/2024 16:06

I don't want to photo them. They are thinner than a piece of spaghetti and about 4cm long. Very dark in colour

Are they in the bathroom? Bathroom centipedes like the damp.

Itwasafterallallaboutme · 01/03/2024 16:09

If they are really tiny and a sort of rusty brick colour, they are probably the larvae of fruit flies.

Gastropod · 01/03/2024 16:12

They sound like millipedes. They are pretty harmless, but I haven't heard of them congregating indoors unless they got lost somehow...

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 01/03/2024 16:12

It’s really hard with a picture embargo!

SolverofPuzzles · 01/03/2024 16:15

They have been spotted downstairs. I thought the cold damp weather may have brought them in but not sure how.

Anyone know how I can stop them?

4cm is quite long.

You really do need to post a picture if you want help!

This really, different insects, differnt behaviours/motivations 🤷‍♀️

Haruka · 01/03/2024 16:21

Do you have birds? I once had similar and it turned out to be caterpillars from moths that love bird food. They came in with the box of feed we had bought. Tiny holes on those are a giveaway.

ATerrorofLeftovers · 01/03/2024 16:25

Nobody will be able to help without a picture.

TraitorsGate · 01/03/2024 16:26

You can't stop them, they get in through doors, windows, floorboards, pipes, plugs, without knowing what they are it's difficult to help you.

SolverofPuzzles · 01/03/2024 16:32

They seem much thinner than caterpillars. Originally I did think it was a really thin worm but it appeared to have little legs. This sort of thing really distresses me when I have no control over it.

Look up millipede and tell us if that's what they are!

SolverofPuzzles · 01/03/2024 16:35

Also they curl up when I tried to sweep it up.

Definitely millipedes, totally harmless

I don't think that will help op!

I guess silver fish as it usually is. Often found near damp areas
