What size home did you have when you had your first baby?

My sister and BIL were lucky enough to own a 5 bed house before starting their family, and they managed to do all this under 30.

We live in a two bed semi detached home. It’s a lovely street. We have a garden and a bedroom for baby, and some floor space in the sitting room but not a separate playroom or anything like that for when they are bigger.

Everyone’s different but what was your living situation when you had your firstborn and if you upsized how old were they when you did this?

Two bedroom flat! Moving into a four bed detached house with garden etc soon though (DS will be two).

mummaoftwogirls · 29/02/2024 20:07

Moved from a one bed flat to two bed semi when I was 6 months pregnant with my first. Shes now 4 and her baby sister is 11 months and we're still here. They have the biggest bedroom and we use a fold away table in the dining room so they have space to play, we absolutely love our street, it's quiet and close to my mum and DD's nursery and soon to be school so we'll be here for the foreseeable. I think you make it work for you, children don't need loads of stuff and we're clever with storage so everyone has plenty of room.

Expecting now in a 3 bed semi, only moved in recently so definitely no plans to upsize. The location is fantastic. We have Plenty of space, you don’t need a play room! I never wanted to buy a house on the assumption we’d have kids. Not everyone can, and can you imagine sitting in a 5 bed house on your own.

A one-bedroomed maisonette, on the 1st floor, so up a flight of stairs. The council moved up when our baby was 5 months old, to a 2-bedroomed terraced house

Toomuch44 · 29/02/2024 20:15

Large two bed semi. We moved when DD was 14 for investment - extra room is handy but overall all our hearts (including DDs) are with our old house due to nice road, neighbours, house worked for us more.

RamanaBanana · 29/02/2024 20:21

We bought a four bedroomed when we first married so that when we started a family, we wouldn't have to move.
We're still here almost forty years later.
The only time we will move is when we go out feet first in a box.

Lifebeganat50 · 29/02/2024 20:23

3 bed detached with dd, then moved to a 4 bed detached and had ds…now they’re adults and we’re all in a 5 bed Detached

transformandriseup · 29/02/2024 20:24

If we didn't inherit a house we would still be in a two bedroom flat. It was quite a large flat with big bedrooms so it wouldn't have been a complete disaster to raise a child there.

WeightoftheWorld · 29/02/2024 20:27

Lived in a rented 2 bed flat when we had DC1.

Moved to a rented 3 bed terrace when they were a newborn.

Bought it a few yrs later when DC1 was 4 and DC2 was 1.

Expecting DC3 now and still here. No prospect of moving to anything bigger, we can't afford it and I suspect never will be able to tbh.

Orangesandsatsumas · 29/02/2024 20:29

2 bed flat. Moved to a three bed semi when he was 18 months and I was pregnant with second. Still there with third. Need to move but housing market is poor at the moment.

Alwaystired2023 · 29/02/2024 20:29

One bedroom flat with a total of 3 rooms - bathroom, bedroom, kitchen/living room

FrenchFancie · 29/02/2024 20:32

A bit very big 2 bed flat in London. Didn’t own a car either!!! (No parking!).
did have a small and unruly garden, but there was no direct access so it was a bit of a pain.

now love in a four bed semi outside London and no plans to more

DramaAlpaca · 29/02/2024 20:32

We were living in a two bed end of terrace when DC1 arrived. Sold it and moved into a four bed detached when pregnant with DC2.

Pigglyplaystruant99 · 29/02/2024 20:33

3 bed semi with garden. 3rd bedroom was a box room though.

Beezknees · 29/02/2024 20:34

Didn't have a home. Was living with boyfriend at his mum's. Then I was homeless when we split up. Have a 2 bedroom council flat now, will never have anything bigger but I didn't have any more children.

SpaceJamtart · 29/02/2024 20:34

Brought twins home to a studio flat with a balcony. It worked fine, but there was no lift so it was difficult with two babies and shopping. Moved to a 1 bed when they were 9 months and I was pregnant with our 3rd. We all moved to a 2 bed flat a few months after she was born.

We have stayed there they are 6,6 and 5 now and the flat is ground floor with a little garden and have no plans to move at the moment.

Three bed rental semi in a great area. Bought a three bed detached in a less desirable area but with vastly improved transport links when eldest was ten.

Janehasamane · 29/02/2024 20:37

Three bed semi detached, no seperate play room.

HeadNorth · 29/02/2024 20:40

We rented a beautiful one bedroom garden flat in a lovely area - I loved living there. We then bought a 3 bed semi in a much less desirable area. Then a 3 bed detached in pretty village, which we later extended.

Ketzele · 29/02/2024 20:43

Two bed flat. I now have two teenagers and we are in a two bed terrace. I am a Londoner, was raised in a flat and lived in flats most of my life, so perhaps don't have the same sense of a 'family home' as others.

Andnowshesatoddler · 29/02/2024 20:54

We're in a mid sized 4 bed semi. Looking to move up to five bedroom detached but the interest rates make it a no go at the moment.

Esgaroth · 29/02/2024 21:00

1 bed flat until our first child was about 11 months, when we moved to a 3 bed flat with a shared garden and later had second child. The kids are now 6 and 8 and we're about to move to a 4 bed end of terrace house, so we'll have more space, a private garden and a spare bedroom.

All these have been good for the stages we're at and it wouldn't really be so terrible if we had to stay in this 3 bed flat. Though I'm very excited to move! There's no need to start off in a 5 bed and then fill it up!

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 29/02/2024 21:09

The current 4 bedroom detached house we live in. Though moved to Oz for two years and then back again. Kids are teens now. No intention of moving until they’re older to downsize. Not the house I’ve chosen to live in, tried selling it before, but moving to the next town is £££. Have a holiday home elsewhere, so thinking of retiring there eventually.

aintnospringchicken · 29/02/2024 21:37

In a 3 bedroom semi when we had DC1 and had moved to a 4 bedroom detached by the time DC2 was born

Nannyfannybanny · 29/02/2024 21:41

3 Rooms, sitting room, kitchen, bedroom, shared bathroom.."upsides" to a (tiny) 2 bedroom caravan, metal box no heating, not like todays "park homes".
