What size home did you have when you had your first baby?

My sister and BIL were lucky enough to own a 5 bed house before starting their family, and they managed to do all this under 30.

We live in a two bed semi detached home. It’s a lovely street. We have a garden and a bedroom for baby, and some floor space in the sitting room but not a separate playroom or anything like that for when they are bigger.

Everyone’s different but what was your living situation when you had your firstborn and if you upsized how old were they when you did this?

Two bed maisonette. It was fine for a while.

We were in a large 4 bed detached but it took us 10 years to get our baby. When we started TTC we lived in a very small three bed semi. The third bedroom was barely big enough to be described as a bedroom really and downstairs was just one room with a tiny kitchen off of it. We had planned to raise a family in it when we bought it.

Victorian doer upper that we bought in an absolute state just before prices went silly in 1999. Spent years renovating. Three double bedrooms, two bathrooms, living, dining, breakfast rooms and a small kitchen. Only a yard though, no grass out back. We moved out of London to a cheap area. We live just down the road in a 3/4 bedroom three storey house with a bit of garden. Two kids are teens now.

Three bed mid-terrace when DS was born (rented). Then we moved when he was six months old to a three bed semi (rented). Then we bought a four bed detached when he was 15 months old.

5 bed detached. Didn't want the hassle of upsizing later.

Goforitagain · 29/02/2024 19:10

3 bed terrace, just one DC, then 3 bed detached

FinallyFeb · 29/02/2024 19:11

No home when I had my first.

Four bedroom detached house by the time I had my 2nd and five bedroom detached house when I had my 3rd.

eacapade1982 · 29/02/2024 19:12

1 bed flat. Moved to a 2 bed and then a 3 bed before we had dc2.

coxesorangepippin · 29/02/2024 19:12

We have a big house and garden. Glad we did, it saved us moving to a bigger home when the kids arrived and means that everyone now comfortable

Able to WFH easily too

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 29/02/2024 19:14

House same size as yours, although additional small box room. Ex council house. One DC (now adult). DH and I still live there.

hangingonfordearlife1 · 29/02/2024 19:15

1 bed flat then moved into a 2 bed house when she was 18 months. then had my second. We have 3 now in a 3 bed

Hibernatalie · 29/02/2024 19:15

2 bedroom flat above a shop. Until she was one, then moved to a 3 bed semi, then had one more child.

bows101 · 29/02/2024 19:16

DC was not planned so ended up in my 1 bed flat. Self employed and then I was mat leave... about to buy our house then covid hit. So ended up staying there way more longer than intended!

Millie890 · 29/02/2024 19:16

I have one child and live in a 2 bed semi. We have a Garden and DD has her own room, we have all the space we need. All a kid needs is a load of love, a warm bed and food. You don't need a big fancy house ❤️

BarbaricPeach · 29/02/2024 19:17

Three bed semi-detached townhouse. Two decent sized double bedrooms and a top floor master with en-suite.

We're trying for our second now and looking to move to a four bed detached. Not so much because we need four bedrooms but because we want the extra living space downstairs that we can't find in a three bed. And we have no garage at the moment so want that for extra storage space.

LimoncelloSpritz · 29/02/2024 19:17

2 bed terrace. I still miss it.

Hibernatalie · 29/02/2024 19:17

We felt ready to move because we could afford to at that point, we'd been in the flat 5 years. It was up 2 flights of stairs which was a nightmare tbh and had no garden. The flat itself was fine though space-wise

99victoria · 29/02/2024 19:18

We had a one bed flat when my son was born. We moved to a 2 bed terrace when he was 6 months old then to a 4 bedroom semi when our 3rd child was a year old

2Old2Tango · 29/02/2024 19:20

3 bed semi (2 doubles and 1 single/box room). Had two DC there and when they were both primary we extended it so now it's 4 bed and we have a huge kitchen/diner.

Hummusanddipdip · 29/02/2024 19:21

2 up 2 down mid terrace, with dh desk and pc in the living room, during covid (ds was 7 months when first lockdown hit) he worked from home and is still hybrid working. I spent a lot of that summer walking or hiding upstairs as we couldn't be in the same room as he spends a lot of the day on the phone.

We moved to a 3 bed detached house and converted the garage into an office for dh last Christmas when ds1 was 3. Majority of last year he was in the livingroom, but now has his own room, the space behind the sofa where he was is now a play area for dc's we had our second in January.

Lizzieregina · 29/02/2024 19:21

We bought a 4 bed/2.5 bath detached when I was 7 months pregnant with #1.

We bought from a friend who gave us a great deal so he wouldn’t have to deal with selling on the open market.

It was a solid but not fancy house. Could have used some beautifying but we couldn’t really afford that. We moved 13 years later for a slightly bigger completely updated house. Still there.

AhBiscuits · 29/02/2024 19:23

We were in a 2 bed flat. We also owned a 4 bed house but rented that out until I was about to pop with my second, when we moved in to it and rented the flat out instead. Babies don't need much space.

AndThatWasNY · 29/02/2024 19:25

A two up two down. when we moved out when we were having our third we met the woman we had bought it from on the bus. She found it hilarious we were moving for space as she has grown up in the house with her six siblings! Her parents slept in the dining room, 3 kids in each bedroom. She wasn't even that old it wasn't like it was years ago only in the 90s.

sunflowerdaisyrose · 29/02/2024 19:27

Two bedroom cottage. Moved to a 4 bed house when pregnant with second (first was 18 months old). Was pleased for the space by then!

Yuckyyuckyuckity · 29/02/2024 19:27

2 bed mid- terraced cottage with no porch/hallways. The front door directly opened in from the street and into the living room. Absolutely no privacy in the garden, and parking was a nightmare, would often have to park a few mins walk from the house.

We did it up and I did love it but it was always a 5 year max starter house and once LO was walking we knew we needed to move. We are now in a semi-detached 3 bed (soon to be 4 bed) with a driveway which still feels like a novelty!

We prob could have lasted a bit longer in the cottage but it was just annoying things like you could never leave the pram outside for a few mins while handling the baby, or you'd have to push a muddy pram right into the living room. At least now I can go round the back gate and leave baby to nap either in the garden or the conservatory (not happened yet but this is what I imagine once DC2 is here imminently) and I can safely keep an eye on them.
