Best gluten free bread

DesignForLife01 · 29/02/2024 15:28

I’ve eaten Warburtons gluten free crumpets and quite like them. I tried Schar balance of both loaf and I’m not keen at all. It’s even a funny colour. Can anyone recommend a decent gluten free bread for toast?

(Note: not coeliac but dc has IBS and does a version of the fodmap diet and I am trying to cut down on bread anyway so will share the gluten free stuff.)

I like genius seeded bread and schar frozen rolls and schar longlife Panini

Genius is the best IMO. They do several different loaves, depending on preference. I like the brown one. Their pita breads are also nice, if you can find them!

Oh thanks for that. I’ll try them.

The wheat free bakery (online)

Scampuss · 29/02/2024 15:52

Warburtons GF tiger is the only one that makes decent toast IMHO.

Akire · 29/02/2024 15:57

The Genius rolls are amazing almost take like normal bread. I love the Warbutons tiger loaf but gives me serious indigestion. Everything else is inedible.

TakeMe2Insanity · 29/02/2024 15:57

The wheat bakery direct is very good.

I really like the m and s wheat free oaty bread.

krazipan · 29/02/2024 16:05

I love the Schar frozen white rolls. They are actually bread like and don't disintegrate.

Ilovefluffysheep · 29/02/2024 16:06

Warburtons GF Tiger loaf is lovely (but expensive!).

Becky Excell (amazing gluten free ambassador and cook) has lots of bread recipes which are lovely. We've made a few and they taste like proper bread. Obviously time consuming though.

After many months of trying all the GF breads and finding them all to be awful, like trying to eat sand, I have finally discovered Warburton's wraps which I am now using for my work sandwiches. By far the most acceptable GF bread. Not great for toast, unfortunately!

QuestionableMouse · 29/02/2024 16:12

The Morrisons seeded loaf is okay and toasts quite well.

Oh, I forgot on my previous post. The Warburtons square rolls (white ones) are really nice. Taste like proper rolls.

Genius seeded rolls are pretty good too, although have a tendency to fall apart.

Februarysiceandsleet · 29/02/2024 16:18

Generally speaking, M&S is good for g-f bakery items. I particularly like their Tiger bread, and coffee and walnut cake.

I can’t speak to Warburtons (and, increasingly, Genius) as they contain preservatives which make me ill, as do the cheaper Tesco and Sainsbury’s own-brand loaves.

Jeneregrettaisrien · 29/02/2024 18:40

Waitrose white farmhouse loaf is the only gf bread that comes anywhere close to proper toast and marmalade and makes a lovely sandwich too. Their sourdough and cob excellent also. Can’t stand Genius!

ToasterChic · 29/02/2024 18:43

Sourdough is usually fine - the process of making it changes the structure of the gluten so it can be tolerated. My IBS is triggered really badly by wheat/gluten but I’ve been eating sourdough for years. M&S San fran sourdough is good and not chewy/holey and comes pre-sliced. The co-op do a pre packaged sliced sourdough which is really nice too.

just be careful of buying from a bakery if it’s heavily covered in flour on the crust.

MrsCarson · 29/02/2024 19:11

I buy two different ones. Asdas own that has big slices and is a white/brown bread mixed
and I get Warburtons Cross between sandwich thins and a bun

DesignForLife01 · 29/02/2024 19:29

Thanks for the recommendations. There are lots there for us to try. Good point about the sourdough. I wondered that.

Sourdough did not agree with me so I'd go carefully with it.

Iminpatchinghell · 29/02/2024 20:38

I prefer the Sainsburys own brand seeded loaf to the Genius brand. It’s a thicker more bread-like texture. Sainsburys also do a white loaf and whole meal which is just as good. I don’t work for Sainsburys! Just rate their own brand stuff.

DoraSpenlow · 29/02/2024 21:22

DH has recently found a new one in Tesco called Promise soft white loaf that he really likes.

Breathmiller · 29/02/2024 21:56

I find Promise by far the best. You can get it in Tesco and Sainsburies. The multigrain seeded is my go to. For sandwiches and toast. Its the only one I buy now for ordinary bread. I'd rather do without than eat sone of the others.

But there are some nice other products. I like BeFree part baked baguettes. Schar brioche rolls. Warbutons crumpets. And warbutons brioche square type things are good for burgers. They don't collapse the same. Old el paso mini tortilla wraps.
I also love the iced buns from M&S a bit too much - not for the feint hearted calorie wisem

Like a PP I also don't react well to the gf sourdoughs you can get.

You can make a really simple chapatti with a cup of doves Gf SR flour and half a cup of soya greek yogurt (I presume you can do dairy greek yoghurt) but it has to be Greek style certainly for the soya anyway. Mix together with a spoon with some cumin seeds. Squidge together but don't work ot too muchm Roll out with loads of flour. It does take a bit of relearning how to work with it. Dry fry in a hot pan until one side bubbles up. I make them quickly when having a curry.

Scampuss · 29/02/2024 22:00

Promise, like a lot of the others recommended here, has an utterly vile smell to me that I've concluded only some of us can smell as clearly not everyone agrees, but in GF groups there's always some who can and some who can't!

Runningwildish · 01/03/2024 00:11

Remember if you are a sensitive coeliac, even gluten free oats can cause problems. Also wheat free doesn't necessarily mean gluten free as gluten is present in wheat, rye, barley and oats.

Floralnomad · 01/03/2024 00:50

My daughter likes the Promise bread for toast and sandwiches , it has the added bonus of the slices being more like the size of a ‘normal’ loaf .
