Best gluten free bread

DesignForLife01 · 29/02/2024 15:28

I’ve eaten Warburtons gluten free crumpets and quite like them. I tried Schar balance of both loaf and I’m not keen at all. It’s even a funny colour. Can anyone recommend a decent gluten free bread for toast?

(Note: not coeliac but dc has IBS and does a version of the fodmap diet and I am trying to cut down on bread anyway so will share the gluten free stuff.)

Having tried almost every GF bread brand and hating them, I've settled on M&S GF brown oaty bread. Absolutely lovely! And the New York Bakery GF bagels are nice too.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 01/03/2024 03:41

But you aren’t coeliac or gluten sensitive? Why then? I understand your dc needing it. I’d give anything not to eat gf and there is evidence that it may not be a good idea, this is from Schaer so if they aren’t pushing it it probably good advice. https://www.schaer.com/en-int/a/gluten-free-risks-side-effects
Just cut down on decent ordinary bread.

SeatonCarew · 01/03/2024 07:29

I don't like most of the Genius range, but their crumpets are much better than Warburtons in my experience, which I find burnt on the outside and uncooked and doughy on the inside.

M & S do some nice things ( I agree the sourdough and the coffee cake are good). I'll also give a shout out for Asda here, a surprisingly good range, their lemon and chocolate loaf cakes and butterfly buns are fab. Their sliced brown bread is particularly good I find and very easily digestible, and all at good prices.

Top coeliac tip - if you find sliced gf bread reduced, roll it out with a rolling pin and cut circles to fit in the bases of a muffin tin instead of pastry. You can then make a delicious variety of mini quiches, which are ideal for summer picnics and Christmas buffets etc and freeze well.

In our house, DS prefers:

Warbutons Thins
WarbutonsTiger Loaf
Old el Paso tortillas
Promise sub rolls

But I feel for him, as the above still aren't a patch on normal bread.

Promise loaf

WhoaJayShettybambalam · 01/03/2024 07:54

Another wondering why you would eat it if you don’t have to. It’s horrible, just different shades of horrible.

Breathmiller · 01/03/2024 07:55

Scampuss that's interesting about the smell of Promise. Wonder whats in it? A bit like the gene that makes people not like brussel sprouts or coriander.

SeatonCarew that's a great idea about pastry, I'll give it a go.

After mentioning last night about the chapatti dough, I think I might try it out as a pizza base (without the cumin seeds) . Dh makes gorgeous home made pizzas for everyone else and although I've found ones I like, his always look so much better.

Anyone tried making their own pizza bases succesfully?

Horrible and very expensive.

I recently discovered that I am not longer intolerant after years on a gluten free diet. This will save me a fortune and even any old cheap sliced bread tastes better than the gluten free stuff.

The M&S gf bread is the most palatable but also amongst the priciest. It is also often out of stock.

I use a recipe I found online with a fuckload of tapioca flour in it. So you have to buy gluten free tapioca flour, and it also behaves totally differently to ordinary bread dough so you need silicone baking sheets (ignore the recipe saying you can use greaseproof — it doesn't work). You also can't use instant or quick yeast, you have to look for the ordinary dried yeast. But I like it better than any premade pizza or base I've tried, and once you're used to it it's not so bad to put together and work with. https://www.mygfguide.com/gluten-free-pizza-recipe/

Gluten Free Pizza Recipe

Those of you who follow me on Instagram will know that developing this gluten free pizza base recipe has been a labour of love for me. I wanted to develop a base that isn't too complicated and is still quick to make, but that is more pizza-like than so...

The best gluten free bread by far is from online - look up the gluten free bakery. It is far far superior to anything else on the market. I order in bulk - freeze it, and then defrost in the toaster when I need it.

Purplecatshopaholic · 01/03/2024 08:26

I love the Promise chia seed one - get it in Sainsbos.

DesignForLife01 · 01/03/2024 08:55

I don’t have to be gluten free but I am definitely sensitive to wheat eg bread, pasta, cous cous with mild stomach upsets. Teen dc has IBS (diagnosed) and has suffered really badly in the past although it is managed fairly well at the moment after following the fodmap diet. I also didn’t know the bread was so horrible until I tried it this week! I could definitely just cut down on ordinary bread. I do quite like the gf crumpets though.

Thank you, I'll check that out.
I made a pizza last night using my flour and soya yoghurt dough and it was good. Really simple. I'll explore it for more recipes I think.

The promise soft white loaf is really nice and toasts really well. The shar frozen bread buns are nice too. You can either oven bake them from frozen so they are crunchy on the outside like a part bake baguette or let them defrost for a sandwich.

Missmybread · 07/07/2024 20:56

Recently Gluten free & been trying all of the above. I am astonished how many people seem to like Warburtons GF crumpets, they were one of the first things I tried & I thought they were awful. I can only liken the experience to sucking on wet cardboard. Yes I did toast them.

Agreed, they are revolting.

The new Warburtons pittas, however, are amazing.

libertybonds · 07/07/2024 21:20

I have been enjoying the Warburton's tiger bloomer recently.

The frozen schar buns are fab.

If you can get Genius Toastie, it's nice for that cheap white bread experience.

DrCoconut · 07/07/2024 21:22

Genius brioche buns are nice for burgers. Tesco own brand for wraps. Genius tiger loaf is pretty good too.

pastabest · 07/07/2024 21:23

Check the ingredients of gluten free bread. A lot of the better tasting ones contain pea protein which depending on the form can be an issue for low FODMAP diets.

The becky excell cook books are good for gluten free / IBS/ Low Fodmap diets

You can make a good pizza dough with natural yogurt and gf flour, but it makes a very sticky dough, so use lots of flour to roll it out, and grease the tin really thoroughly.

For ease we tend to buy a gf pizza and pile it up with loads of mushrooms, onions, red peppers, a little ham or German salami, fresh tomato, italian herbs and more cheese, and share it between two of us. More healthy and soooh tasty.

DesignForLife01 · 29/02/2024 19:29

Thanks for the recommendations. There are lots there for us to try. Good point about the sourdough. I wondered that.

As you don't have diagnosed coeliac or gluten allergy, try sourdough first. If that works for you, it's a whole better in taste, texture and everything else than having to put up with the alternatives.

Although, as for some inconceivable (to me) reason, you actually find those fake crumpets in any way edible, maybe you would actually like Genius stuff (which I find absolutely revolting even when not already mouldy when it's opened).
