Made beef bolognese in the slow cooker. There's a sort of scum on the surface. Does it look ok?

We need the picture

Scampuss · 26/02/2024 19:15

?

TwilightSkies · 26/02/2024 19:16

There’s no pic. But did you fry the mince first?

D'oh!

No I didn't brown anything first. I normally would but this was a taming twins recipe that claims no browning required, and I have just had a baby so looking for the easiest route! But now not sure whether this is edible.

That looks awful, sorry 😬

PoppingTomorrow · 26/02/2024 19:44

Oh dear, I was hoping someone would tell me it was OK. What a waste of precious time!

That really doesn't look great 😬

Scampuss · 26/02/2024 19:45

How does it taste though? Have you stirred it and tasted it?

Icantbelievebodiesgone · 26/02/2024 19:45

Looks like a plate of vomit. Chippy tea it is then.

SuperDuperJezebel · 26/02/2024 19:46

That's how mine often looks when I do it in the slow cooker, just give it a stir

Janehasamane · 26/02/2024 19:46

I’m not going to lie, that is making me feel queasy.

is the meat in date?

Dearg · 26/02/2024 19:51

Try stirring it. If you cooked it for long enough it will be fine. Mix if through the pasta and grate lots of cheese on it.

BouleDeSuif · 26/02/2024 19:51

Just needs a good stir!

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 26/02/2024 19:52

It does not look great, but if the meat was fresh and smelled ok then it won’t harm you. I’d give it a good stir then taste it. If it tastes ok then I’d serve it. It might be more forgiving though as a pasta bake worked through fusilli and with cheese on top.

That ^^
If it tastes alright then it's fine!

I froze the mince well within date a couple of weeks ago. It didn't smell bad when I opened it!

I'm feeling more cautious while BFing a newborn.

😮

What does that mean @Dogfisher ??

Give it a big stir then taste it.

SnarkMode · 26/02/2024 20:08

It looks rank but it's probably fine. Taste it.

Perfect28 · 26/02/2024 20:09

It looks like it's dried out and unstirred. Meat sounds fine frozen in date so as long as it reached a safe temp for long enough it'll be fine to eat. I would be tempted to make it look a bit more appetizing though, can you stir in some passata and cook it for another 10 minutes? Herbs?

Yup, looks like a lack of liquid.
Get some a tin of chopped tomatoes or passata or even a cup of stock in there, and give it a good stir.

Janehasamane · 26/02/2024 20:17

Did you defrost the mince?

honestly id order a takeaway , I couldn’t eat that.

Pastamasta · 26/02/2024 20:36

You don't need to brown the mince but you should stir halfway through. It's the fat coming out of the mince and it will just sit on top like that.

It's absolutely fine to just give it a good stir.

But did you defrost the mince first? You shouldn't put it in the slow cooker frozen.

Scampuss · 26/02/2024 20:40

I've just looked at the recipe and, whilst I wouldn't cook a bolog in a slow cooker, it really should look much better!

Did you follow the recipe and did you cook it at the right setting for long enough?
