Dare I say it…

I don’t like line drying my clothes. There, I’ve said it. Everyone is going nuts about a hint of sunshine and getting the clothes out but I’ll be honest, I hate the way they smell after being hung outside. Each to their own, and all that…but, what’s your unpopular opinion?

There’s some things you just shouldn’t say out loud 😂

jollyhollyday · 26/02/2024 07:47

I hate the smell too, it's very distinctive after being outside drying but I can't describe it

wubwubwub · 26/02/2024 08:30

It smells of the conditioner for me

DilemmaDelilah · 26/02/2024 11:04

I like the smell of my clothes when they have been line dried... But I don't like the crispiness. I don't use fabric conditioner as I really don't like my clothes smelling of conditioner.

I don't like the faff of having to hang my clothes on the line - but I do like being more energy efficient and saving money.

Mine still go in the dryer.. I CBA

SmileyClare · 26/02/2024 11:27

When my line dried clothes smell a bit like hamster, it means the washing machine needs a good deep clean. That always sorts it.

Im not going nuts about getting the clothes out (who are these people? 😂)
but as someone without a tumble drier, I’m looking forward to being able to dry clothes quickly and easily.
The sun is a great (free method) for brightening a white wash too.

Clothes blowing on the line in the sun means summer to me and I can’t wait for the summer. Bare foot in the garden with the sun on my back- yes please!
Im so grateful I have a garden in the summer.

I definitely not going nuts though.

TinselSniffer · 26/02/2024 11:29

Me too. I hate the smell, the crispness, and the surprise insects waiting for you when you take it off the line. But I still line dry when I can because I can't stand to waste a good drying day!

pastypirate · 26/02/2024 12:21

Also hate it - peg marks and misshapen clothes.

Deliadidit · 26/02/2024 12:28

Blasphemy!

icelollycraving · 26/02/2024 12:30

I like bedlinen dried outside but the rest is a pita. I often forget they’re out there. It only works well on my days off.

DaBlackCatsAreDaBestCats · 26/02/2024 12:31

I love the smell! I put my stuff out on an airer. No oegs marks x

NoCloudsAllowed · 26/02/2024 12:31

Each to their own, I hate the smell of tumble dried clothes and fabric conditioner. Actually makes me retch

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 26/02/2024 12:32

I hate line drying so I don’t even possess a clothes line. I tumble dry as it saves hugely on ironing, I just hang or fold. Also it makes things nice and soft. I don’t want towels that take my skin off.

twingiraffes · 26/02/2024 12:33

They don't go crispy if you hang them outside on a breezy day. I like the smell of outdoor line-dried laundry far more than the artificial '10x the Freshness' so beloved of advertisers.

What does 'Fresh' smell of anyway?!

Quitelikeit · 26/02/2024 12:34

Tbh detergents and conditioners are packed with carcinogens so I’d put the laundry out to try and air the toxins off.

Im going to switch to something more natural very soon

Hanging is an art. If you’re getting peg marks and misshapen clothes, you’re doing it wrong

Avatartar · 26/02/2024 12:37

am sure I sleep better when the linen is line dried, love the fresh smell too

I’m all for line drying and strong fabric conditioner.

Im afraid you’d be vomiting in my house.

I have a Lenor fragranced plug-in in the hallway and sometimes put scented laundry beads in a spray bottle and spritz all my sofa cushions 🤣

TheChosenTwo · 26/02/2024 13:02

I’m with you Op, hate the smell of clothes dried outside and I hardly ever put the airer outside. Don’t have a washing line as clothes drying outside looks like an eyesore.

I switched a while ago to Ecover, and it smells nice to me, not at all strong but fresh. So many detergents smell way too perfumey. Haven't used conditioner for years either.

usedtobeasizeten · 26/02/2024 13:36

Love the fresh smell of line dried clothes! No peg marks or misshapen clothes either! So
much easier to iron too.

Agree with this too. I didn't have a wasjing line for years and I'd happily tear down the Cornish line at our current house

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 26/02/2024 14:43

No tumble drier here and no room for one, so my stuff has to go outside as there's no central heating to hang it off. So everything goes outside, winter or summer - I just have to pick my days more carefully in winter. Love that fresh smell when it comes in, but then I live in the middle of the countryside on the top of a hill, so it blows about a treat and doesn't smell of diesel fumes and next-door's coal fire.

My ex used to say that line dried clothes smelled of egg to him. But he was a weirdo anyway. Summer sun drying weather all the way!

iwafs · 26/02/2024 14:49

Mine go in the dryer. It's a British thing to think that tumble dryers are some sort of sin. Clothes need washing and drying. So I use a washer and a dryer.

I mean if we aren't allowed tumble dryers, how can other things be OK? Why are we allowed to have a microwave when we could heat things in a pan/oven or choose foods that don't need a microwave? Nobody says that we're all bastards for having a microwave. It's a really peculiar attitude towards tumble dryers that we have here. It's a basic kitchen appliance which is fine to use.

I think because they are power-hungry, and with the CoL crisis and the variable (and expensive) cost of electricity, a lot of people prefer not to use them if it's not essential, and if you have a garden, a washing line and decent weather - it's not essential.
