Dare I say it…

I don’t like line drying my clothes. There, I’ve said it. Everyone is going nuts about a hint of sunshine and getting the clothes out but I’ll be honest, I hate the way they smell after being hung outside. Each to their own, and all that…but, what’s your unpopular opinion?

I love the smell of line dried washing and the smell of woodsmoke and bonfire and bbq

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 26/02/2024 19:56

I'm not sure what this outdoor smell is. Mine don't smell of anything when I hang them outside!
My clothes are a crumpled mess after tumble drying, yet everyone says how it's great for saving on ironing. What am I doing wrong?

usedtobeasizeten · 26/02/2024 20:02

My clothes are the same when I tumble dry them! I love getting my washing out on a blowy day…blows all
the creases out and they’re lovely and soft!

Vettrianofan · 26/02/2024 20:09

Love getting my clothing hung outside. Fresh breeze! Beautiful ❤️

HappierTimesAhead · 26/02/2024 20:11

I like the end result but I cannot understand the excitement about it because it is just another job that falls on my shoulders to do 😑

Not so far 😂 no one has keeled over yet.

You could pop down to the river and bash your clothes on some rocks

Very droll. Although surely you’re not suggesting that spending hours toiling by a stream is on a par with the effort required to walk out your back door and hang out some washing?
I can get a huge load pegged out in about 10 minutes, and if you do it right then by my standards-no ironing usually required.

I spent years longing for my own garden and get great pleasure in seeing my laundry dancing on the line in the sun now I have a little garden.
Eye sore indeed! Hmm

No, and it wasn’t directed at you. It was in reply to the sanctimonious poster who suggested we should be saving the planet. But only by not using a tumble - a washing machine is fine even though it uses water and electricity.

Well to be fair, you could pop down to the river and bash your clothes on some rocks. Save cash and the environment…

Or not wash them at all and smell like a butt

Allshallbewell2021 · 26/02/2024 20:34

A strong stance boldly taken in this protospring time of anticipation when you know many of us are skipping out with laden baskets on our hips, aprons aflappin' like a 1950s rural documentary from a simpler time.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 26/02/2024 21:27

That's a good idea @TomeTome

TheMushroomFamily · 26/02/2024 21:28

I dont put mine outside too many spiders

Mm, and their willies. And it might get darked on.

Nope don’t care about that but my washing line always has huge spider webs on 🤷‍♀️

Even better!

SuffolkUnicorn · 27/02/2024 11:31

Same the smell makes me feel sick

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 27/02/2024 13:25

I don't mind line dried clothes, I don't find they smell any different. My clothes don't smell of anything generally as I use unscented laundry detergent sheets and don't use fabric conditioner. However I rarely end up line drying, during prime drying season I have hay fever so don't want my laundry covered in pollen and the rest of the year there is a high risk of rain (I live in Ireland). I do get pissed off if I hang stuff out, it gets rained on, it has to be spun again in the machine and then tumble dried anyway.

I also don't really get the whole 'loving' line dried clothes. I'm happy to do it as an energy efficient thing when I can but if someone else did my laundry for me I would not be able to tell how it was dried by feeling or sniffing it so have no preference from that point of view.

DropDeadFreida · 27/02/2024 13:48

You'll prise my tumble dryer out of my cold, dead hands!

I love my tumble dryer and will not give it up.

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 27/02/2024 14:11

But please do explain to me, someone, how I can get my tumble dried clothes not to be creased up lumps? This is why I don't like tumble drying, yet others like it because it makes their clothes wrinkle free! How do I achieve this? 🤯

I use felted wool dryer balls and take the clothes out as soon as the dryer is finished and give them a good shake. Some fabrics still need to be ironed but on the whole most things are wearable.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 27/02/2024 14:30

Oh, and don't overload the dryer. Two small loads will take the same amount of drying overall but will come out looser and less tangled than one big load.

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 27/02/2024 14:36

Thanks @BlackAmericanoNoSugar I'll try your balls (so to speak!).
I don't tend to overload, and do try to unload when warm. Maybe I'll also try a slightly shorter cycle.

Chickenwing2 · 27/02/2024 15:11

I like the smell, but can't be arsed to hang everything up- it is much easier to bang it all in the tumble dryer.

Tumble dryer also keeps things nice and soft. Only downside is it shrinks things Grin

SmileyClare · 27/02/2024 21:02

The reason I’m excited about sunny dry weather to hang my clothes on the line is two fold:

a) It’s a much easier, quicker (free!) way to dry clothes for me because I don’t have a tumble drier and

b) It’s a sign it’s the summer and fuck me I love the summer. ☀️

Maybe that’s what the people you’ve encountered are thinking too op!

It doesn’t go much deeper than that for me.

Although, because I line dry during all the warmer months and have been for years, I I consider myself a pro at it 😂
I still maintain there are ways to stop your line clothes smelling of hamster, going stiff and needing ironing!

I can’t help with the spiders, bird poo or sudden downpours though. It’s not all good news.
