Do spiders die if vacuumed up?

PastelMonkey · 25/02/2024 20:02

I have an increasing number of those spindly spiders appearing in my house. I've been happy to leave them alone until I had one crawling on my back 😱
I'm thinking I can vacuum them all and then put the bag out to the bin but I don't want them all crawling out whilst I'm doing it!
I don't want them dead but also don't want them on me.

Anyone tested this and know if the vacuuming kills them or not?

In my experience it doesn’t.

Lumiodes · 25/02/2024 20:11

What you’re doing is torturing them. Sucking them into a bag of dust where their mangled bodies die slowly. It’s cruel. Either squash them instantly or leave them alone.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 25/02/2024 20:12

In my experience, vacuuming kills the spindly ones but not necessarily the ones that are a bit more substantial.

We have a clear plastic vacuum cleaner so you can see what you've sucked up. The big thick-legged spiders don't always die instantly. They usually do if you keep vacuuming for a while though.

Spudlover · 25/02/2024 20:13

The spindly cellar spiders eat the big house spiders. Learn to live in harmony if you can.

And yes, they’ll die.

CarrotOfPeace · 25/02/2024 20:14

They breed in the vacuum and you end up with more

PastelMonkey · 25/02/2024 20:15

I really have tried to tolerate them. I've had some of them for months ( unless they are new ones). I don't like spiders so it makes me uncomfortable being around them.

I would put the bag straight into the outside bin to hopefully prevent this.

It may kill some
It will maim others
Either way, it's torturing a living thing that didn't ask to be born.
Please be humane and buy a spider catcher like this

My daughter is terrified of them 🙄, so we have one of these upstairs, and also downstairs. Fantastic for catching bees and wasps humanely too, then releasing them unharmed.

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 25/02/2024 20:19

It’s horrible to vacuum them up. They may well not die instantly but will likely suffer damage to their limbs or suffocate. It’s hard to imagine that anyone would do this with a view to preserving their lives. You only need to Google this to see the likely impact on a delicate spider’s limbs.

OOlivePenderghast · 25/02/2024 20:21

Putting house spiders outside will kill them too so I’d just accept the fact that unless you’re going to release them somewhere warm they will die whatever you do.

feelingalittlehorse · 25/02/2024 20:24

Honestly, if you aren’t a spider fan, leave the spindly ones well alone.

I have come to a mutual agreement with mine. They remain in their designated spots and do not go in places I dislike (eg, above my bed, in my bath), and I leave them in situ. If they break the disagreement, they are relocated outside with the spider catcher.

Since I've left them, the only black spiders I’ve seen are the ones dead in the cellar spiders webs! Which makes me 🤢🤢 but better than seeing them hoolying about my house like they own the gaff

Cheshiresun · 25/02/2024 20:27

Not immediately no, they're usually running around in there. Usually they are dead when I go to empty the Dyson into the bin on collection day though.

Of course they die- if they are not torn limb from limb by the machine, they suffocate in the dust bag. Just catch them with a jar and a bit of card and put them outside. They are living creatures.

The whole thread is giving me new nightmares !

There’s at least a chance something with eat them/they become part of the natural ecosystem. Or find the warm shed.

CrunchyCarrot · 25/02/2024 20:30

Get a spider catcher then you can humanely remove them to the outdoors! I leave a certain number but sometimes there are just too many so some get relocated.

SweetPetrichor · 25/02/2024 20:36

Spiders are extremely delicate. They are essentially a water balloon with legs and will not clot if injured - unless its a leg, in which case they can sometimes close off the injury as it’s a bit like a hydraulic system but it’s no guarantee. A humane spider catcher is the ideal solution. Just relocate them outside, or in a shed. Although, the spindly ones eat other spiders so they are natural spider control!

BettyOBarley · 25/02/2024 20:39

Nope, we stayed in a caravan that had 100s of tiny spiders throughout. DD was freaking out so we used the handheld vac to get them all and they lived inside until we tipped them out 😒

I agree. What a horrible way to kill something.

DiscoBeat · 25/02/2024 20:41

If you don't like spiders then leave the spindly ones alone! They are brilliant at keeping the big ones away.

hottchocolate · 25/02/2024 20:43

Agree with PPs

I've always hated spiders but don't mind the spindley ones now. They don't even seem like proper spiders. The big thick ones are a different ballgame and apparently they do eat them so it's worth letting them stay!

QueSyrahSyrah · 25/02/2024 20:44

From someone who has a bagless Hoover with a transparent dust cylinder I can confirm NO hoovering them does not kill them.

DillDanding · 25/02/2024 20:45

I love a spider, especially those spindly ones.

Don’t vacuum them up - it’s cruel.

SomersetTart · 25/02/2024 20:49

Put a clean, empty glass over them, then gently ease a piece of thin card under the glass, take the whole thing into the garden and lay it down somewhere sheltered. The spider will wander off and you can collect the glass later.

You'll feel like you've done some good for nature and the spider will live to spider another day.

Baircasolly · 25/02/2024 20:49

I can't tell if everyone's taking the piss. It's inhumane to hoover up a spider, but it's perfectly kind to put it outside WHERE IT WILL DIE?!! House spiders live in HOUSES, clue's in the name.

It seems the only reasonable thing to do is to buy a mosquito net to sleep under.
