The Omaze House

The Cotswolds House.

Mumsnetters always know what's 'wrong' with the house, and why it's being given away as a prize.

What's the story with this one, then? Just out of interest 😊.

I quite like the Dorset one? Anyone local k ow anything about it? I'm always a bit dubious about why they don't sell.

MaggieFS · 23/04/2024 10:43

I think the one at the moment is Cheshire?

AIstolemylunch · 23/04/2024 10:44

There's a newer one in Dorset

Rogerstreasures · 23/04/2024 10:59

This is the Cheshire house, its in Prestbury, home to footballer’s and soap stars.

The Omaze House

There's a house near where I live that I keep expecting to be used as an Omaze house. It's a huge, fairly modern house with a swimming pool in a separate building and in a touristy region. When it's been up for sale in the last few years the photos show fabulous countryside views etc. In reality it's right in the middle of a housing estate, surrounded by small starter home type houses (as in, gardens of loads of small homes right up to the garden fences on 3 sides). The garden is really small for this size of house (it looks very much like it was intended to have a bigger garden but someone built a swimming pool on half of it). The pictures of lovely views must have been taken from a high up window with a magnifying lens. Previous owners have tried to let it as a holiday let, but it's never been very popular and locals have (understandably) complained a lot about noise/parking (the house has 8 bedrooms but only parking for 2 cars) etc. I can imagine someone winning what they believe is a huge secluded holiday house in the middle of fabulous countryside and finding they actually have an expensive to run house overlooked by about 20 housing estate starter homes.

Not local but I suspect it was quite overpriced for what is an unusual house on a very standard cul de sac. Looks like the previous house was demolished and this one built, the postcode is BH21 2SR.

The Cornish don't like us Grockles!

Go on then, I'll take this one!

Here in Devon you'll be called grockles.
In Cornwall you'll be emmets - which is based on the Cornish word for ants.

Either way, both economies rely on tourism so if you encounter a wanker then I'm sorry!

There’re a few Omaze threads, usually for specific locations, so I’ve chosen this thread to ask if anyone’s come across this house draw before? Called rafflehouse dot com, it came up this morning on Instagram. I’d never seen it before. Didn’t link as I don’t know if it’s frowned on to do that, but it’s easy enough to find. House at the moment’s somewhere in Kent, said to be £2.7 million in value.

They say they offer a cash alternative and that entrants choose which charity to support.

I saw them for the first time today - there was a legal case in 2019 with the advertising standards authority because the winner only got a sun of money as not enough was raised to cover the house itself. Trust pilot seems to score highly. Afraid I am nervous of spending money as I trust Omaze more. That it has celebs (David Beckham last time) promoting the charity and a TV presence seems to lend a little more assurance that it’s not a rip off! Suspect the business model is the same, though.

IvorTheEngineDriver · 26/08/2024 14:45

Frankly, they all look naff to me. Haven't seen one yet that would get me to buy a ticket.

martinisforeveryone · 26/08/2024 14:57

That's interesting @CautiousLurker thanks.

I haven't been tempted, it just struck me that it was the same business model.

CouchSpud · 26/12/2024 18:31

The current one is on Coniston. Just down the road from me. In a lovely spot! They’ve been building it for the past few yrs.

CurbsideProphet · 26/12/2024 18:35

@CouchSpud I would love to live in Coniston! What a lovely location. Was it built specifically to be sold through the Omaze raffle? I've never quite understood it really.

I’ve no idea! I’ve been watching it being built as I commute past each week.

It’s at the South end of Coniston lake. Not in Coniston itself.

Do you have to sign up for many months or can you just pay £10?

Copernicus321 · 26/12/2024 18:46

The house in Bodinnick was a question of location. Admittedly, it looked great from the water but what isn't apparent are the cars queueing up on the road with their engines running while they all wait patiently for the ferry just the other side of the garden wall. In addition, the sound car ferry running 7 days a week just metres from your veranda 14 hours a day.
