I'm making scones today......

And I don't have a very good history of making them!

I'm making two batches - Cheese & Chive and also Plain with raspberry jam and cream.

Now, the cheese ones are in the oven already but the light in my oven has gone so I cannot peer in to see if they have shot up like a rocket in Florida and so I shall simply wait! The last lot I made had an erectile distinction problem and we're as flat as a fart so fingers crossed this lot will be perfection!

I am also very bored on this lovely sunny Sunday and so I hope god is on my sconey team.

Also, it's Scone as in Bone and absolutely not Scon as in gone.

Good luck!
Team Scone as in Bone here too.

Whatineed · 25/02/2024 14:22

Buttermilk instead of milk always works for me, I make it beforehand with milk and a squeeze of lemon juice. Good luck!

My mother was from Scotland. She made very good scones. Me not so much. Scone as in gone was how she pronounced them so so do I.

You're wrong about the pronunciation.

TheTripThatWasnt · 25/02/2024 15:39

When you cut them out, use a straight down/up motion. Don't twist the cutter. That's key to a good rise. There is a proper scientific explanation (something to do with the gluten strands), but I can't remember it.

And you can pronounce it however you like...as long as you put your cream on first.

Cheeesus · 25/02/2024 15:39

Use a torch to have a peer in.

Cluelessbutwilling · 25/02/2024 15:42

Are they out?

Fartooold · 25/02/2024 15:45

I'm working my way through Nationl Trust book of scone recipes.

They're lovely, but my waistline isn't happy - found the reason mine had not been great in the past was because of my fondness of over handling the dough - I now hardly mix at all, just combine and it's worked for me.

Scons not scoans😁

lotsofpeoplenametheirswords · 25/02/2024 15:48

Both are out! The cheese ones a bit flat but taste lovely with Lurpak and the others have done better than usual and will be lovely with my jam and cream later!!

Weirdly when I read scone it rhymes with cone but when I say it it rhymes with gone.

If I was Scottish it would be scoon. 😂

Cvoight · 25/02/2024 15:51

I made cheese scones today too. Yum.

Scon as in gone. Unless you’re from Yorkshire

Mamaraisedadoughut · 25/02/2024 15:51

Ooh. Love a good scone.
My daughter makes some every year before Christmas, they're spiced and the raisins are pre soaked in whiskey.
Yum.

mibbelucieachwell · 25/02/2024 15:53

Eh?

All the Scottish people I know pronounce it to rhyme with gone.

Maybe you're thinking of the place on the edge of Perth named Scone, pronounced Scoon.

Scone rhyming with cone irrationally winds me up Grin

Hermittrismegistus · 25/02/2024 15:55

Do you fold the pastry once rolled out? If you do that you get that lovely natural break.

Cvoight · 25/02/2024 15:57

I have much better results if I don’t try to roll them out and use a scone cutter.

My recipe makes 8 scones. Once I’ve brought the mixture together, I cut it half. I take each half and gently shape it into a circle. I then use a sharp knife to cut each circle into quarters, giving me four wedge shaped scones (like pizza slices).

Ever since I started doing that, I’ve had consistent results. It always went wrong with the rolling and cutting. This way, I can make a super short dough without it breaking. It also means I’m guaranteed height, rather than depending on the perfect rise.

And the wedges look nice. Mind you, I only make cheese scones. I’m not sure if I can get my head around wedge shaped normal
scones.

NewName24 · 25/02/2024 16:00

Mmmm your scones look lovely and are making me crave scones now.
However, you are so wrong about how to say "scone".

Scone has to rhyme with gone, or the joke doesn't work.

Ah well that's it because I'm in Yorkshire, gods own county so it's Scone as in Cone. As god would want it to be!

My dad calls then Scons for no other reason than to wind us all up!

It’s jam, then cream and it’s scone as in gone.

I'm Irish. It's scone as in cone but with an s at the front.

theywenttoseainasievetheydid · 25/02/2024 17:58

It’s scone as in cone as far as I am concerned…

I generally do not use a cutter ,I just form into a round and cut like a cake and then separate them out a little on the baking sheet. No waste that way.

I am and it's Scon as in gone.

Has someone been misinforming you?Hmm

BCBird · 25/02/2024 18:17

Scones as in gone. Made some gluten free ones for jubilee. One of the stages was to refrigerate tge dough for a while. Has anyone got a recipe for scones where u don't have to rub? Hope u enjoyed them

BasilParsley · 25/02/2024 18:21

My Domestic Science teacher (quite posh) at school in the late 1960s (in North West London) was firm about the pronunciation: "Scones should not be like stones!" Ergo, the middle letters have always rhymed with 'gone' to me....

I make mine the same way. I find them easier to retrieve from a toaster too (I often have some left for lunch the day after).
