What is with this new 'Joker style' mouth trend?..

Hi,

So I've noticed this more and more recently, so it's clearly the new in thing in the world of tweakments.

I should say, I'm not anti tweakments. I haven’t had any myself, but I don't feel strongly either way. It's a personal choice, but there are certain trends that I just don't understand and this is one of them. I know it's entirely subjective, but there are certain treatments that I think people fall into having because in theory, it would make sense that they'd make you look younger, like having a smooth forehead, fuller lips and now, slightly (to very) up turned corners of the mouth. In practice though, this in particular to me just looks a bit.....strange. Definite Joker vibes. I know the idea is a youthful mouth would point up rather than down. It sort of makes sense. Down = saggy and saggy = ageing I guess, but it doesn't look youthful. It looks quite creepy.

I've noticed quite a few celebs recently with this look and it's completely changed their face.

I say all this, but give me a few years and who knows, maybe I'll be fully on board with ALL of it! 🤣

Glad I'm not a celeb. Mocked for ageing, mocked for trying not to age. The whole thing is so toxic.

There have been some popular posts on Twitter recently sharing shots of celebs like Mariah Carey and Britney being mocked in the 90s for being "fat" when they were anything but, and people have commented on how much things have changed. But they haven't changed really- we're still dragging female celebrities (as a proxy for women generally) for not managing to be perpetually perfect.

It’s not really a trend, but a sign of overdoing the filler… duck lips, flying saucer face, cat eyes etc. It’s sad they can’t see it

I’ve seen lots of pictures of Emily Blunt on the awards circuit this year and am horrified by what she’s done to her face. Sad for them that they feel the need change their natural look. It never looks younger, it just looks altered.

I've just had a Google, I wouldn't have recognised her, what a shame.

@abricotine I believe it is a specific procedure where the corners of the mouth are lifted. Again, in theory I can understand the attraction, but it just never looks right to me. Even just a very slight lift looks odd.

Holly Willoughby has always had a smile like that, corners of the mouth being that shape. Its just more noticeable as her lips have thinned probably due to aging and it looks likes she had her buccal fat removed

I have always had slightly upturned corners of my mouth, kind of like Lana Del Rey, but now that I am mid-40s they drop ever so slightly year by year. Wish I could pick them up again but I don't want to look like the joker. I always thought people like that had had a facelift and that's what's stretched the mouth out and pulled it upwards. I kind of look like that if I pull my skin up on my cheek bones close to my ears.

Nicole Kidman is a 'good' example of joker mouth

TwoforFlinchin · 26/02/2024 15:46

@Cas112 I don't think so. In that picture she's just smiling, so the corners will automatically go up, plus she's probably 20 years younger!

This is a good explanation of a joker smile

Is it the Botox lip flip - that’s a new trend. Not fillers. Agree it looks awful and can knock your smile off.

TwoforFlinchin · 26/02/2024 17:24

@Delatron that's the one!

That was when she was really young, we all had lovely full cheeks in our teens / 20s.

Holly Willoughby has it now. Why do people do it to themselves?
