I can't get my teeth any whiter

This is stressing me out.

I had trays fitted by a dentist and the gel but the trays seem to be loose and all saliva gets in (but I only realised this a year later when examining them to try and see why it wasn't working), the dentist now won't help.

Also using Crest strips which aren't helping. They don't seem to cling to my teeth very well.

They just seem to get darker and darker all the time. Not a wine drinker, smoker, or coffee/tea drinker either. No dental problems. Brush and floss twice a day.

Have you discussed with your dentist?

dollystc · 25/02/2024 10:12

@tomago I have. It wasn't my normal dentist that I had the trays fitted by (didn't have a regular dentist at the time I got that done). They've just said my teeth are perfectly capable of whitening so try get more trays fitted but I can't afford that at all for a second time.

Bizarrely I am having the same issue, I think teeth naturally get yellow looking with age.

Spent £100 this week on airflow polishing and yes a bit whiter, but I swear they used to be whiter than this.

@SparklyOwls it's good to know that it's not just me. It's definitely frustrating.

Do you use a whitening toothpaste too? It sounds so minor but using the Colgate whitening one over a long period of time has actually made a difference to my yellow teeth!

EasternStandard · 25/02/2024 10:19

If the dentists think you can get a whitened result can they not admit the trays are the reason it’s not working?

You shouldn’t have to pay again

dollystc · 25/02/2024 10:22

@ThisHonestQuail I don't, I use Corsodyl usually for gum health!

@EasternStandard the dentist I got the trays off was just a one-off going to that one. I've since got a regular dentist that has advised that.

Oh right I thought different dentist, but same practice

What about going back to the original one?

SpttyMaldoon · 25/02/2024 10:26

Nooooo! Cordosyl yellows teeth.

my dentist told me because I have porcelain venenos and shouldn’t use it.

FannyFifer · 25/02/2024 10:26

Doesn't corsodyl stain your teeth?

Aviee · 25/02/2024 10:27

Don't use corsodyl unless your teeth are a good colour anyway.

dollystc · 25/02/2024 10:32

@EasternStandard I've been in touch about the trays but they have said that I'll have to pay again unfortunately if I want them remade. I wouldn't go back there at all, lesson learned.

Oh no! I thought it was just the Corsodyl mouthwash that stained teeth rather than the daily use toothpaste!
I've been using it for a couple of years as I had gum disease (all cleared now!). Do I stop using it?!

OP posts:
Dancingdrums · 25/02/2024 10:36

I think it is just the mouthwash that stains, not the toothpaste.

BIossomtoes · 25/02/2024 10:42

Corsodyl makes a whitening toothpaste.

FannyFifer · 25/02/2024 10:42

I don't think you are meant to use corsodyl forever. Maybe just till issue is sorted.

thefallen · 25/02/2024 10:46

It's what happens as we age, OP. If your teeth are clean and healthy then the fact that they don't look tippexed really isn't an issue.

SpttyMaldoon · 25/02/2024 10:47

it’s This ingredient in the Mouthwash that causes yellowing, Chlorhexidine Digluconate 0.2% w/v

i believe some of their toothpastes also have it, although a smaller amount.

I would check the ingredients on the toothpaste you have at home.

but out of curiosity, I would steer clear of it for a while and see what happens.

dollystc · 25/02/2024 10:49

@SpttyMaldoon no, it doesn't seem to have any ingredients like that, it's the active gum repair one though. Definitely going to try a whitening toothpaste though alternatively now my gums don't seem to need Corsodyl!

Good luck! But please bare in mind, like others have said above, that with age your teeth with inevitably be yellower (how old are you?)

when i had my veneers done, the dentist chose the white shade according to my skin colour and age so that they wouldn’t look fake (Katie Price, cough, cough)

dollystc · 25/02/2024 10:59

@SpttyMaldoon mid 20s!

SpttyMaldoon · 25/02/2024 11:00

Oh, you’re very young!

PawsisShady · 25/02/2024 11:11

Have you got the trays already? You can just buy the syringes for top ups which are way cheaper
Are they very yellow or are you fixating on them? I only ask as I hate mine, think they're really yellow and my dentist is Confused "the white teeth you see are veneers, yours are not yellow"!

dollystc · 25/02/2024 11:28

@PawsisShady I have the trays, but they seem too loose. Not right made.

It's my bottom teeth that are definitely actually quite dark yellow.

My top teeth I do hyperfocus on but too but have been told they're not as bad as in my head.

Unless they’re green, I don’t really understand your level of anxiety/frustration.
Everyone on TV with brilliant, sparkly white teeth past a certain age looks strange, IMO. Saw Lee Mack the other day who seems to have succumbed to it, presumably because he’s fronting a big quiz show. It just looks really false at his age.

Oakbeam · 25/02/2024 11:36

There’s your problem. If I remember correctly, it even warns about tooth discolouration on the leaflet that comes with it.
