What time do you have to call in sick?

Lying here, feeling awful and wondering about work tomorrow. What time do you have to call or otherwise communicate absence, and what time do you start work?
I have to call between 7:00 and 7:15 for an 8am start.

8am no matter what time you start (flexi time in an office?

SometimesIchangemyname · 25/02/2024 07:36

As soon as you know. We have 24 hour on call.

Dacadactyl · 25/02/2024 07:37

As soon as I know I'm likely to be too ill to work.

In your shoes, I'd send a text to my manager today saying I'm not well and unlikely to be in tomorrow. I'd say I will let her know for sure in the morning.

unlikelychump · 25/02/2024 07:37

Id expect to hear from my staff before 0900, 0930 at a push. We are nkn front facing thought which is relevant, and I would expect them to be aware of their diaries - if they needed to send apols for a meeting first thing

BreakfastAtMimis · 25/02/2024 07:38

We don't have any rules that I know of. Most people would probably get in touch with their manager by teams/email/WhatsApp before 9am. Saves having to do the ill voice on the phone! 😉

Officially I have to call every day (unless a sick note has been submitted) but not at a specific time. This has been an absolute nightmare in the past when it’s been impossible to get in touch with management and I’ve had to spend ages calling different people, hoping someone picks up. I had to call my manager every day for almost three weeks when I had COVID which was ridiculous.

My new manager is happy with a message every day which is a huge relief, I can send a message and go back to bed.

AlltheFs · 25/02/2024 07:41

When your line manager starts work, so 8.45-9 ish

Our roles don’t require cover though.

tuvamoodyson · 25/02/2024 07:42

8-8.30 and every day whilst sick (NHS)

Upsidedowncat · 25/02/2024 07:43

What time we usually start work (8)

cariadlet · 25/02/2024 07:46

We're given a time for the earliest that we can phone (6.30) rather than the latest on the assumption that people will ring as soon as they know.
I'm a teacher so can't leave it until I'm due to start work.

niclw · 25/02/2024 07:50

By 7am - teacher so school has to find supply teachers.

swapcicles · 25/02/2024 07:51

Best to check your contract as all workplaces differ but ideally call or message as a heads up as soon as you know you are unlikely to be in.
In the morning call direct to your line manger. (Or sick line/whatever the contract tells you)
In my previous employments there have been cases where the sick person has messaged a manager but then had a warning on return as they didn't call the workplace direct.
I can see how this is an issue as for what ever reason the message may not get through or the manager may not be in that day.

Cakeybake · 25/02/2024 07:52

School in London - We have a 24hr absence line so can leave a message as soon as we know we are ill. Must call in before 7:30am. This is so cover can be sorted and supply teachers arranged if necessary.
If it's left any later, the chances of getting a decent supply teacher to cover are slim and they often won't arrive before lessons start at 8:30 so then it means that other colleagues have to cover which affects staff morale.

FingerLickingGod · 25/02/2024 07:53

We don’t. We have an app and we put our absence on there and log the amount of days we’ll be off for. (NHS).

Awaywiththeferries123 · 25/02/2024 07:53

Before 10am. We work on a flexi-time system and that’s the start of core hours.

Hecate01 · 25/02/2024 07:54

Two hours before our shift starts but ideally we'd give as much notice as possible.

Pacifybull · 25/02/2024 07:55

By 7:30 if working an 8am shift. We have to phone. Not an email.

Hoglet70 · 25/02/2024 09:03

I get to text/email as I start work before my manager and our work phone system doesn't ring until 8.30 anyway. I've emailed at about 3am before so she sees it when she logs on but I don't have to wake up. Ugh, ringing in sick is awful. It just makes you feel so guilty even if your left kidney is hanging out of your ear and your foot has fallen off in the night.

43ontherocksporfavor · 25/02/2024 09:06

Primary school. Phone by 7.30am so cover can be arranged. Head doesn’t like a text and wants to speak to you. She doesn’t ‘do’ sickness….

Shinyandnew1 · 25/02/2024 09:06

By 7am so supply can be organised.

DancingLikeARobotFrom1984 · 25/02/2024 09:08

Before 7.25am (no matter what time you start), but there is an answer service so you can call any time, even the evening before if you want or in the middle of the night

Mmdilemma · 25/02/2024 09:13

I start at 7am, no one to cover me really but the staff just manage if I'm not there. I can technically phone at 7am to the managers on call. But if I needed cover for the day like most jobs, ASAP in the morning would be the proper way. I like to give the staff a heads up as they can get some duties done earlier as the place is open 24/7. So really I could phone at like 5am if I wanted just to let them know as early as possible. Usually phone in if I'm really not well at about 6.45am. Have to contact management in the next department over as no one in mine seems to answer the damn phone lol. Im really lucky they are quite flexible. Then I must phone each day (morning or evening before) to let them know if I'm coming in or not. Until I get a sick note after one week, then I don’t need to phone anymore. Just keep my manager updated a couple of times per week.

AhBiscuits · 25/02/2024 09:15

I start at 8, so 8. I need to drop a zoom message to my boss.

DinnaeFashYersel · 25/02/2024 09:15

No rule but people generally send a teams message to their manager and team between 7 and 9 and then record their absence on the HR online platform

MillshakePickle · 25/02/2024 09:16

8.30 and to call at 8.30 hoping someone is there answer.
