What time do you have to call in sick?

Lying here, feeling awful and wondering about work tomorrow. What time do you have to call or otherwise communicate absence, and what time do you start work?
I have to call between 7:00 and 7:15 for an 8am start.

We text the group chat as soon as possible, especially if we need more than one person in-office for wet ink signatures and someone else has to come in or we need to re-arrange things.

Proper call at 9am to discuss anything urgent in case it wasn‘t obvious.

It’s interesting, all the different arrangements. I’m also a teacher, but all our cover is done by other staff, not supply teachers. It’s also not my manger I phone, it’s which lucky member of SMT is on duty that week.

Most staff have to inform their line manager by 8am. I think that’s technically the rule for me, too, but I usually inform the staff on duty at 7am by phone and then message my boss straight after. Nobody can cover me, so it involves a few senior managers being on-call to share my core duties. I like to give the organisation the heads up asap.

I send a message before 9am. Usually to say I'm unwell but can process something in an emergency but will catch up tomorrow. I wfh and no one is really impacted if I have a day off.
DH on the other hand works in manufacturing and has a strict shift system that someone else has to be called in. His shift starts at 6am or 6pm and he has to call before 5am or 5pm or earlier. The on call person has often already done a 48hr week and will have to do another 12hrs on payback. DH hasnt taken any time off sick in the 10yrs he's been there.

No idea, I assume there might be a time in the company handbook. In reality not until after my start time as my manager wouldn't be in then either. I need to speak to my manager. I usually start around 9 and try and fone just before or after that. We have flexi but my manager often doesn't start until 9 or later. Sometimes I can't get hold of her so I'll txt and try again later. Role doesn't need covered though. Well sometimes someone else might need to chip in and help out but not the same as say working in a shop or hospital where they need ur shift covered.

I got a special adjustment for migraines, so that I can notify the night before and sleep in if I can.

We can flex our hours, and getting a good solid lie in can mean that I can actually start work 100% better at 10:30 having sent a warning the night before rather than waking myself up to send a message meaning I'll definitely be off all day.

RightOnTheEdge · 25/02/2024 09:53

We have to let them know ASAP and at least two hours before our start time.
You have to speak to a manager, you can't just send a message or speak to another member of staff.

Thatladdo · 25/02/2024 11:25

Send a message as soon as I decide im unfit to be there.
This could be around the start of the shift if there is cover in, or if there is no cover in then thats a problem 😆whoever is in is staying in ( after a 12.5 hr shift) until cover is found and can get in.

No further messages for the duration of self cert, then send in fitnotes.
Ive just been off about 6mths, maybe contacted every 2 weeks until i was issued a laptop/phone and told i was back at work, from home. Hardly lifted a finger in the past 18 mths.
Gone in for catchups for an hour or so maybe once a month.

I have an exellent employer and management chain.
Ringing in everyday is treating you as a child, thats litteraly what I have to do for my daughter if she is ill from school. Ridiculous!

Brainded · 25/02/2024 11:29

I usually send a text to my manager as soon as I know, the evening before or early in the morning if my illness came on overnight. Start time is 8.

Shityshitybangbang · 26/02/2024 08:17

Usually before the manager starts work 7.30, so I can purposely leave a message in the answer machine. lol 😂
