Would you rather be warm and look a mess or look nice but not as warm?

Basically I'm having a couple of days away next week and the temps are looking around 9-10 degrees.
I have a big puffer coat which is warm but I look awful in it (10 sizes bigger and just don't feel nice )
Or lots of nicer coats which aren't as warm but I feel nice in.
The trip will involve looking around shops ,the city,a meal out and drinks
So will involve being inside more than outside.
I know it's first world problems but would you wear something you felt comfortable in and layer up ?
Or wear the toasty coat but spend two days feeling horrible and not attractive in it?

Layer up nice things, thermals!

Missingmyusername · 23/02/2024 10:35

Wear the nice coat- but I’m peri🙈 so always warm.
You can layer up? hat, gloves, thermals, scarf? I can’t stand going into shops with a mahoosive coat. It’s usually warm inside the shop and then you are stuck lugging an awkward coat.

Jeannne92 · 23/02/2024 10:37

Nice.

Get a cashmere jumper and socks and some thermal underwear.

Make sure your outerwear is dry cleaned, boots polished, etc. Take a nice bag,a couple of different scarves (clean, ironed), and simple jewellery and make-up.

We are getting the train too so the thought of sitting on that with the big coat too is stressing me out ha ha
On the night, our hotel is less than a 6 min walk to the restaurant/cocktails bar too so it shouldn't be that bad
Only thing is its showing light rain so will need a brolly too

Warm and not as nice which is why I live in my giant coat and joggers 😂 I look a treat sometimes! I hate being cold though and I am always cold

ailison55 · 23/02/2024 10:39

I was worried some people might think I was being shallow caring what I looked like.
I just enjoy myself more if I feel nice
Like today for example it's so cold
Stuck the big coat on to pop to the supermarket /dog walks and feel like crap.

@Cameraclick that is me most days ha ha
Today being one of them

If you are inside more than outside definitely the nicer coat that makes you feel good. The puffa will be an encumbrance anyway and you'll spend the time hating it and not enjoying yourself . If you are walking around outside you shouldn't be too cold at 9/10 degrees. Admittedly, I'm a menopausal woman and I think everywhere and everything is either far too hot or absolutely freezing, but it's another reason for me why layers are always the answer for this type of in/out scenario.
tldr: the nice coat!

You can take it off!

I'd go with nice and risk less warm. You're not hiking in the highlands you're shopping and eating out. You don't need the massive duvet coat.

Quizine · 23/02/2024 10:40

Wear the nice coat. 9 or 10 degrees is positively balmy anyway compared to some temps we have had already.

PuttingDownRoots · 23/02/2024 10:41

For shopping... nicer coat.
For hiking, watching a sports game, outdoor concert, etc when actually outside... warmth wins.

But 9-10 doesn't sound that cold comparatively speaking (presuming UK... if you were in a warmer country it would be!)

ailison55 · 23/02/2024 10:43

Yeah it's Edinburgh
I've never been before and thought Scotland might feel colder.
Thanks everyone
Will stick with nice coat /thermals etc

It’s shallow to care how you look??

YouDidntEvenAskIfSheWasThereMoriarty · 23/02/2024 11:03

I wouldn't wear a big coat to go shopping in. I'd be toasty initially, then boiling and responsible for a huge coat. It would be a nuisance to carry any shopping along with a big coat too.

Better to be a bit chilly to begin with.

Yerroblemom1923 · 23/02/2024 11:09

Nice but cold. You'll soon warm up walking and being in shops and carrying a coat around isn't fun.

ComtesseDeSpair · 23/02/2024 11:12

If looking crap makes you feel crap, you’re not going to enjoy your trip as much. Wear the nice coat. 9-10 isn’t particularly cold, especially not if you’re walking and in and out of shops and bars most of the time.

BarrelOfOtters · 23/02/2024 11:15

Nice coat.

Edinburgh can be f*cking freezing though so be prepared to buy a new warm coat if needs be. If you are a southerner it might take you by surprise.

ItsallIeverwanted · 23/02/2024 11:23

I think there's a time and a place for being padded coat warm for sure, on freezing days, dog walking, walks, standing on touch-lines and so on. The rest of the time I just wear wool/fluffy coats, one layer thermals, make sure I have a pair of gloves. It's rarely super-freezing and as everyone says, if you are inside a lot, then padded coats are a pain.

rickyrickygrimes · 23/02/2024 11:55

I'm from Edinburgh. Judging from my last visit, most people in Scotland currently dress like they are about to head off up the nearest Munro, so you can probably get away with the big coat. But go for the nice coat plus layers, hat / scarf / gloves etc. You're on holiday, not walking the dog.

Personally, I don't buy unflattering clothes anymore, even just for practical purposes. It just depresses me and life is frankly gloomy enough without looking like crap as well. I bought a flattering, well-fitting padded waterproof for outdoor / cold weather, and I feel good every time I put it on.

julili · 23/02/2024 12:01

Wear the nice coat with thermals underneath it.

also, why did I initially read the thread as “would you rather be a worm…”!?

ItsallIeverwanted · 23/02/2024 12:56

@julili , it's Friday, put the kettle on....

Cvoight · 23/02/2024 12:59

When I read the thread title, I immediately thought warm. But then reading your op, I would choose nice.

I would def layer up a lot underneath. Vest, thermals, merino jumpers, warm socks, hat etc!

Have a lovely weekend

CombatLingerie · 23/02/2024 13:04

Yes OP another vote for the nice coat. Everything is quite close together in Edinburgh so even if you felt cold you could pop in somewhere to warm up. I never feel the cold. I can’t even blame the menopause as I am over sixty now. I have been watching the new True Detective set in Alaska. I swear I would even feel overly hot there😂. Have a lovely time I love Edinburgh!

LakeTiticaca · 23/02/2024 13:15

Age 18: freezing but looking good
Age 60: couldn't give a monkeys 🤣🤣

Cheeesus · 23/02/2024 13:21

Look at the ‘feels like’ temp and see what the wind is doing. I have to say it looks more like 2c by the evening. I’m here and I’ve been in my dreadful puffer for the evening dog walk but in my nice wool coat for the day. Make sure you have a scarf, hat and a cardigan maybe?
