Would you rather be warm and look a mess or look nice but not as warm?

Basically I'm having a couple of days away next week and the temps are looking around 9-10 degrees.
I have a big puffer coat which is warm but I look awful in it (10 sizes bigger and just don't feel nice )
Or lots of nicer coats which aren't as warm but I feel nice in.
The trip will involve looking around shops ,the city,a meal out and drinks
So will involve being inside more than outside.
I know it's first world problems but would you wear something you felt comfortable in and layer up ?
Or wear the toasty coat but spend two days feeling horrible and not attractive in it?

When I was younger it was look nice and not be warm however now I’m older it’s be warm and not look so nice.

I would much rather be warm and comfortable so I could be present and enjoying my trip rather than feeling cold and uncomfortable and just wishing to be back at the hotel etc!

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 23/02/2024 13:35

9-10 degrees is hardly "big coat" weather.

GeniusLevelJaffaCake · 23/02/2024 21:21

Edinburgh can be bloody cold. The wind always seems to be whistling down whichever street you're standing in! However, it sounds like you won't actually be outside for long spells, so I'd go with the nice coat and layers below.

MidnightMeltdown · 23/02/2024 21:27

9-10 degrees is pretty mild for this time of year. I definitely wouldn't wear a big coat! You'll be sweating if walking around!

Shitlord · 23/02/2024 21:29

It's 9-10 degrees that cold? I'd do nice coat, gloves, hat, scarf and a thermal layer underneath if you're still cold.

DryVaginaury · 23/02/2024 21:32

In genuinly cold tempretures and where I will be outdoors a lot, of course I'd rather be warm however in your situation of a 10c temp and frequently indoors i would not wear a puffa coat so I'll go for looks.

Hibernatalie · 23/02/2024 21:52

I think you should take your big puffer coat to the charity shop.

Lightnose · 23/02/2024 21:57

I'd always go for comfort, but I wouldn't be unhappy to think I wasn't looking my best..

Bonbon249 · 25/02/2024 00:28

Former Edinburgh resident here - it's a lovely city - very walkable, so I would go nice coat and layers. You do need to make allowances for the wind chill factor as Edinburgh can be quite breezy! Enjoy!

Thorntone · 25/02/2024 00:32

If the big coat makes you feel shit, just buy a new one. I have big coats that are both warm and fashionable.

LizFromMotherland · 25/02/2024 00:36

I always go for comfort but I'm in my late 50s and when I was younger, I would've said different.

However, not all warm coats have to look shit so maybe when you have the money in the future, you might be able to buy a lovely looking very warm coat.

beastlyslumber · 25/02/2024 00:40

Edinburgh can be fucking freezing this time of year (I lived there for over a decade). Don't bother with a brolly unless it's one of those massive ones designed for use in windy conditions. Locals never use brollies because its just pointless. You can wear the nice coat but you'll need thermals, a warm hat, gloves, scarf, socks and boots, especially for the evening.

Tryingtobedifferent · 25/02/2024 06:28

Ugh I hate big coats, only wear when absolutely necessary. Definitely a nice jacket/jumper and a warm scarf is always my preference

Willmafrockfit · 25/02/2024 06:31

but you will be going in and out of shops and getting warm in the shops

WandaWonder · 25/02/2024 06:34

Warm, if I meet a basic standard I am happy with that

PeridotSparkle · 25/02/2024 06:47

Can't you take both & decide when you get there op?

AmaryllisChorus · 25/02/2024 06:57

Go to uniqlo, buy heat tech fitted long sleeve tops and 100% cashmere sweater and scarf. Wear these under your warmest nice coat, with lined gloves, hat and thick socks or thermal tights under nice boots.

EndlesslyDistracted · 25/02/2024 07:13

9-10° is not cold if you're walking around, no way I'd be wearing the thick puffa, I'd boil every time I went inside or walked up a hill. Even in a thin coat I wouldn't wear thermals, just a cotton vest under a jumper and a lightweight coat would be my choice, with a scarf and gloves for if there is a wind-chill.

hot2trotter · 25/02/2024 07:54

I don't own a "big coat" and I manage the school runs in all weather's (I don't drive). I'm always rushing around and feeling warm though. The thought of going shopping with one on would fill me with dread as I'd constantly be taking it off if I felt warm so I'd probably just end up carrying it - which is more of a pain.

Vod · 25/02/2024 07:58

ailison55 · 23/02/2024 10:43

Yeah it's Edinburgh
I've never been before and thought Scotland might feel colder.
Thanks everyone
Will stick with nice coat /thermals etc

Good call. The wind in Edinburgh can be biting even as spring starts to come in, but I'd just hate to be carrying a puffa round half the time. And if the train is at all crowded and you end up standing, it'll be a massive nuisance. If you run cold, don't forget good gloves, scarf and perhaps hat/earmuffs.

Charlieradioalphapapa · 25/02/2024 08:01

Unless there’s a significant wind chill factor, 9-10 for this time of year in Scotland is pretty good. Depending on finances is there any way you can update your puffer? Loads of sales now and Uniqlo do some which are very warm but also smart? That way if you think you might not be warm enough you could achieve both aims?

NotFastButFurious · 25/02/2024 08:02

People in Edinburgh tend to dress sensibly for the weather unlike in some cities where fashion takes priority (Newcastle, I’m looking at you 👀), wear your big coat if you think you need it but 9-10 degrees is quite mild IMO! Check how windy it’s going to be before relying on an umbrella to keep you dry!

swayingpalmtree · 25/02/2024 08:03

Layer up and look nice- I cant stand huge puffy coats, they make me feel suffocated and like the Michelin man.

Lived in the city for nearly 20years and have only ever worn thermals in the city during beast from east!!

PSEnny · 25/02/2024 08:06

Thermals and hat, scarf, gloves. Having warm legs makes a massive difference to me so thermal tights are a must. I always wear a hat but have a lovely furry one when I need to feel smarter.
