Do you have an Apple Watch?

Do you like it? Which do you have? Do you feel like you're being followed and spied on all the time? How much about your life does it really know? Can you see your family members fitness and activity levels, can they see yours? Is it weird feeling you're being watched?

Do you find it helpful and or motivating for sports (biking, Pilates, swimming, walking) and keeping track of what you've done? I've got a Suunto but it's so big and awkward that I only ever wear it if I'm doing sport, never all day. DH has offered me one (he has the ultra, but I think it might be too big for me) and I really can't decide if it's too smart for me!

You have to give people access to see your data so no, it isn't intrusive. If you are interested in logging your daily activity for health reasons then you will really like it. I wouldn't have one for the other functions as I don't use them, I use my phone all the time but I love the fitness and health apps.

EndlesslyDistracted · 21/02/2024 13:28

I have the SE I like being able to track my workouts or even just walks, health data etc. I also use it as a timer when cooking, find the alerts very useful for messages and calls when I'm away from my phone and use the maps app for navigating on foot so I can keep my phone in my pocket while walking. Also use it for Apple Pay in shops. Best of all I can ping my phone with it when I can't remember where I've put it down.

FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain · 21/02/2024 13:32

I have the series 8, not the cellular one so it does need to be within range of my phone to access internet or make calls,

I love it, use it for Apple wallet to pay for everything, to track workouts, I really like that it works in the pool and counts my lengths.

I like seeing all my health data I've heart rate, sleep, respiration rate, temperature, step count etc.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/02/2024 13:34

Do you like it? -yes
Which do you have? - dunno, it's a few years old now. Smaller size, webbing strap.
Do you feel like you're being followed and spied on all the time? - No.Confused
How much about your life does it really know? - some info on how much I'm moving, heart rate. Nothing else more than a phone does.
Can you see your family members fitness and activity levels, can they see yours? - no
Is it weird feeling you're being watched? - I don't.Confused

Do you find it helpful and or motivating for sports (biking, Pilates, swimming, walking) and keeping track of what you've done? - yes, very.

I don't always carry my phone around the house so it's useful for picking up calls and text message notifications, and extremely useful for finding my phone!Grin

The only real negative is that it could do with a longer battery life.

I have one. No idea which one but it’s not big and awkward. I love it for recording workouts and seeing how many calories I’ve burned and for keeping track of daily move and exercise goals. I like being able to take calls on it as my phone is always on silent and I can never find it so it’s so much easier just answering on my watch. And I like the period tracking app on it.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/02/2024 13:36

Timer and meeting reminders are very useful.

ShennyInfinity · 21/02/2024 13:39

I've got the Apple Watch 9 I think and I absolutely love it, it's like having a little friend on your wrist. I like to keep a check on how many steps I'm doing during the day. mine also isn't cellular so I need my phone with me, but I can answer the phone via my watch, it monitors your heart rate, well everything really, you won't regret getting one, I think they're amazing.

Aposterhasnoname · 21/02/2024 13:41

Love mine, it’s series six but I’m thinking of getting a nine soon. I dont share my data with anyone so of course I don’t feel “watched”

It definitely encourages me to exercise more and the various health tracking options are fascinating.

westisbest1982 · 21/02/2024 13:47

Series 8 owner here and it's handy for fitness monitoring, but I wish I'd spent the extra £100 to buy the cellular version because to make calls or use Apple Pay (or almost anything useful), the watch has to be near my iPhone, which isn't always convenient.

ApoodlecalledPenny · 21/02/2024 13:53

I’ve got one, don’t feel watched. I’m not sure why you’d think that? It’s an inanimate object.

I share location on my phone with the kids and DH in case of emergency so more likely to feel watched that way!

The battery life is the worst bit. I wonder if it’s better with the more recent ones? Mine is 3-4 years old, and Apple tech never seems to last.

Toddlerteaplease · 21/02/2024 13:59

I love it!

HesterRoon · 21/02/2024 14:06

I have one and have mixed feelings. My local woodland walks aren’t as enjoyable as I find myself constantly checking my heart rate to ensure I’m not going over the max-before, I just used to hike and not worry. I have a condition which makes it dangerous if my heart rate goes up too much, but instead of being reassuring, it makes me anxious! My friends have one and like comparing their health stats-vO2 max etc. if you really enjoy looking at your training stats, it’s great, but I’ve discovered that’s not for me. I don’t wear it at night to track my sleep as again, I’m sure I wouldn’t like to see the results-plus, I tried it once but was just aware of it on my wrist and kept waking up. My dh likes it for sleep though-it’s reassured him he’s getting enough. It’s handy having a timer on your wrist and for things like a quick check of the weather-and Apple Pay of course!

ErrolTheDragon · 21/02/2024 14:16

DH has a new one, it has a fast charger and probably better battery. His also has the ecg function, which mine doesn't - he has atrial fibrillation and finds it very useful for checking if something feels amiss if it's that or just some ectopics.

logicisall · 21/02/2024 14:41

Everything @ErrolTheDragon said, except mine has a gold metal strap so I can even wear it for formal occasions. I actually bought it for the fall alert function as I live alone, but I use it to track my many gym classes and heart rate. It's a shame that the battery only lasts 18 hours, but I can live with that as I have the iWalk portable phone and watch charger too.

CurlsnSunshinetime4tea · 21/02/2024 14:49

Series 7
Love Love Love the fitness aspect, but have iPhone and Nokia smart scale
the tracking has benifits when hiking.
i don’t share or accept others share as the reminders are annoying.
i have a few bands and easily match them to outfits.

CatsMother66 · 21/02/2024 14:59

I tend to only wear it to monitor exercise, walking and cycling.
I go over to help my elderly Mother on set days and it seemed to learn this. As soon as I got in my car to go over, it would ping and tell me I was 45 minutes away from my destination which it would also name. Creepy.

Toooldforthis36 · 21/02/2024 15:05

Hands down worth all the £ so I can ping my phone to find where I left it. Love mine.

You don't need it to be near your phone for Apple Pay!

EndlesslyDistracted · 21/02/2024 16:16

Apple pay is stored on the watch completely separately from the phone, it catches up when you go back near the phone so you don't need cellular. Handy if your phone battery runs out.

I can also take calls and do everything else on mine at work if I accidentally leave my phone at home because they are both connected to known wifi networks.

Rivendeluge · 21/02/2024 17:21

@CatsMother66 my phone does that!
I suppose I'm worried it will show me as not being as active as I think I am 😂and what data it links to my health insurance. My current watch doesn't track e.g. active minutes.
I'm just being paranoid, I guess. That it can figure out and track health data, heart rate, periods, sleep, where you go

I've got a cellular gold stainless steel series 9, I got the steel because the glass is tougher and the steel doesn't scratch. It also looks better as an everyday watch with the gold strap. It's my second steel one, my last one survived over a year with a scratchy/bitey puppy and never had a mark on it.

I like to take note of my steps/calories but I'm not obsessive about it. I just have a normal watch face on mine with my daily steps at the bottom.

I really only got it so I didn't need to take my phone out with me. I NEVER take my phone on dog walks but I can use my watch in an emergency to take/receive call. I also get all my messages and most dispatch/delivery notifications.

I can nip to the shop without my phone and pay on my watch.

How the hell do you think it's linking anything to your health insurance?Confused

mynameiscalypso · 21/02/2024 19:06

I have an SE and I love it. The reminders to stand up and move every hour brilliant and I've set my targets for my 'rings' at a reasonable level so I don't feel too stressed at meeting the all. I normally have my phone near me so it's not an issue to receive notifications on it at all. I also like using it as an alarm. Being woken up by a vibration on my arm is much more pleasant than beeping!

DiveBombingSeagull · 21/02/2024 19:11

Mine is really old, but I love it and wear it all the time, and now my expensive watch just sits in a drawer.

Not sure how or why you think it would mean you were being watched - my watch records some health data and I can see it on my phone, can't see anyone elses and they can't see mine as far as I know.

babysnowman · 21/02/2024 19:14

I regret buying mine. I like it when I remember to wear it but having to charge it annoys me.
