Mattresses - 2 singles in a super king frame

Has anyone done this? We’re hoping it’ll solve all our sleep problems as DP is disturbed by me moving through the night, and then I’m disturbed by DP being awake!

With a standard single mattress being 190cm long and a super king bed being 200cm, we know we’ll need to get 2 European singles, but we’d like to try before we buy and not many stores sell this size. I wish IKEA still sold them.

Does anyone have any mattress recommendations please? We prefer pocket sprung, not foam.

Also, for those that have done this, did you have any problem fitting them in a super king frame (I don’t want a divan base)? We’re worried the lip of the mattresses may make them too tight a fit width ways?

Anything else we need to think of?

I have this, my bed is fixed slat (rather than the bouncy ones) and I have two single John Lewis natural collection mattresses. I haven't bought European sized mattresses just standard singles and they fit in my frame fine.
It's a game changer, my husband is the fidgeted and I'm such a light sleeper that this has really helped!

Boredmum24 · 20/02/2024 17:24

We did this but found that you can get a bit of a gap in the middle

Noseyoldcow · 20/02/2024 17:38

We have an ikea king sized slatted frame bed with 2 single European size mattresses. A full king sized mattress topper solves the problem of a gap in the middle between the mattresses, and there is no problem with them both fitting in the frame. I recommend separate quilts too.

I just bought 2 single beds and fixed together. It's not on a frame though, I have a straight valance round the Base. It means the mattresses fit perfectly.

whoateallthecookies · 20/02/2024 17:53

We do this, and have a superking mattress protector on top. Even so, we get a bit of a gap - from beds I have slept on elsewhere, zip and link does solve this, so definitely worth considering - we initially got two mattresses as there's no way we could have got a superking up the stairs in a previous house (we were very close on the frame, and that was before we assembled it)

Iudncuewbccgrcb · 20/02/2024 18:05

We have a zip and link super king mattress.

My main advice would be to get separate normal double duvets though with whatever super king mattress you get.

gingergingerginger · 20/02/2024 18:09

We do this, but we have two divan bases. So essentially two European singles with one massive headboard. The mattresses are also zip-linked. It makes a massive difference in terms of transfer of movement. If you want to bridge the gap, buy a thick topper. I would also recommend buying an emperor-sized top sheet if you use one just for plenty of room underneath.

HelpAWelshie · 20/02/2024 18:46

For those recommending separate duvets, we both agree with this and will be getting 2 double duvets.
I was thinking of getting a thick mattress topper to solve the gap issue. We’ve seen the zip link ones but they’re really expensive.
Any other recommendations for mattresses?

We’ve come across the John Ryan mattresses a few times but it’s a lot of money even for the most basic of zip link mattresses.

I didn’t think about getting any bigger than a super king sheet, does this size not fit very well? I like a tight fitting sheet so would be worried an emperor would be too loose.

whoateallthecookies · 20/02/2024 18:54

We have two double duvets rather than singles - we find that a bit more comfortable, as both of us find a single duvet a bit narrow

JimBobsWife · 20/02/2024 19:06

We have a tempur mattress and you can't tell when the other person is moving or turning over as your side is unaffected. Totally different to a sprung mattress, in my opinion.

Get a superking sheet to sleep on, but an emperor sheet to put on top of you, if you like one.

John Ryan are expensive, but DH and I are heavy people so we wanted something that would last well. I was also keen for natural materials for heat regulation. Always spend as much as you can on anything between you and the ground!

Noseyoldcow · 20/02/2024 19:11

Our mattresses are European single sized from when ikea did decent sprung ones. God knows what we will do when they pack up. Spend a fortune, I suppose. But the lack of a zip and link is ok for us, the topper takes care of that. As to lower bed sheets, we use fitted super king sized, but they're extra deep ones so they fit over the mattresses with the topper and tuck in nicely underneath. And we have regular double sized duvets, one each.

BertieBotts · 20/02/2024 19:13

This is what they do in Germany, but the main difference is that in addition to separate mattresses, you have a bed frame and then rather than slats to put the mattress on you each have a "Lattenrost" which basically puts each mattress on its own separate surface.

This is the only one I can find on amazon UK - normally you have a separate one for each side.

Look at Hotel.Contract Beds for zip link. Not expensive and really great quality.

Spudthespanner · 20/02/2024 19:16

Does a gap matter? Couldn't you just have two single mattresses with their own sheets on and when the rest of the bedding is on you won't notice?

londontonyc · 20/02/2024 19:22

I think IKEA do 200 long mattresses specifically for their day beds - double check the width is compliant but I'm sure they're not standard single length.

For exactly the same reason, OP, we have a two single beds (each measuring 75cm x 200cm) to form a standard king-size bed. They aren't zip-linked and sit side-by-side on a king size frame. Our other consideration was the ease of turning the mattress(es).

We chose the Devonshire model by Vispring at a cost of just under £3k, including the additional cost of making the mattress to our specification. In the event you find you've chosen a tension (too firm, too soft, etc) they'll replace the mattress for £100 (although our retailer included this option as part of our deal).

We’re not bothered about the gap to be honest, we think we’d be fine with 2 European singles or a zip/link. My issue is being able to try a mattress before dropping a grand and finding it’s not comfortable. But it’s not easy to find these mattresses in stores unfortunately.

They do, but they’re extremely thin foam mattresses. I have them on my DD’s bed and I don’t think they’re meant to be slept on by grown adults every night.

Wow, that’s a lot of money! We couldn’t justify spending that.

Our bed came like this, but with quite a thick over mattress over to make it like one bed. My mattress under is softer than dh's. The mattresses on the base are fastened together be being inside a cover so they look like one mattress and can't pull apart.

Oldieandgoldie · 20/02/2024 20:44

Try looking at mattresses for electric beds…single width, but extra length.

Also Amazon sell a T-bar filler for the gap between two single mattresses, I’m sorry but I can’t think of the correct name.

MizuB · 18/03/2024 01:10

Here's a fully European bed, Ruff, with 2 hybrid IKEA mattresses 90x200cm, separate comforters and duvet covers just like the sensible European countries all use, and really strong, adjustable lattenrost underneath to support the mattresses. We love this bed and bought it when living in Europe for 15 years, and since have had another 15 years using it here, with fully zip allergen-avoiding mattress covers to keep the mattresses fresh. And yes they are flipable and should be flipped twice a year.
