Is it general knowledge that Lyle's golden syrup had a biblical quotation on the tin?

Out of the strong came forth sweetness.

I think I've known since being little (and my family aren't particularly religious).

A professor of marketing in London thinks:

"The story of it coming from religious belief could put the brand in an exclusionary space, especially if it was [sic] to go viral on X or TikTok."

So two questions:

a. Did you know it was from a bible story?

b. Would it make any difference to you buying it?

(I actually like the design of the rebrand, and do think a dead lion is a bit of an odd thing to have on your syrup, but I don't think that Britain's tradition of "cultural Christianity" would put people off buying something in their weekly shop!)

I knew about the Biblical reference on the tin. It wouldn't put me off buying it, why would it? 🤷🏻‍♀️

England, along with the majority of Europe, was deeply rooted in Christianity. You can see the indelible mark on our heritage all around you, just look at the magnificent cathedrals that dot the landscape. Most of us celebrate Christmas and Easter don't we?

To answer your questions:
a. Yes.

b. I feel less inclined to buy it since they've rebranded.

Same.
I love packaging that doesn’t change over many decades, and the tin is part of my Grandparents’ childhood, my parents’ mine and my dd’s , which I find rather touching. I always buy that brand in that tin but I won’t stay loyal now as no point !

InMySpareTime · 20/02/2024 18:10

The tins aren't being rebranded, only the squeezy bottles

ginasevern · 20/02/2024 18:11

Yes, I knew. My mum explained it to me when I was a young child but my mum was very keen on general knowledge. She once explained the whole story of the Willow Pattern on our dinner plates.

Malarandras · 20/02/2024 18:13

No and no. It’s just sugar.

WulfWuman · 20/02/2024 18:15

I knew because we got told it at school. Can't say as it's influenced my syrup buying decisions at all but I rarely use it anyway.

What are they doing to make it more edgy? Sugar tits?

Isthisjustnormal · 20/02/2024 18:20

Yes I knew the story and the quotation/imagery

it slightly appeals, from the perspective that it’s so leftfield compared to comtemporary branding approaches and links to their Quaker heritage iirc). Certainly wouldn’t stop me buying it unless they suddenly started deciding to get behind Old Testament values.

ParanoidGynodroid · 20/02/2024 18:20

I knew, and I liked the dead lion and bees. I don't care if it's religious.
A sticky tin of syrup is a must have in any larder!

Novella4 · 20/02/2024 18:22

Yes I knew the quotation
No it doesn’t stop me buying it . I like the look of the tin

cakeorwine · 20/02/2024 18:25

No idea
I did start the first thread about it though!

I can see why they might want to rebrand it - a dead lion and bees isn't very modern, is it...sometimes things change.

IvorTheEngineDriver · 20/02/2024 18:25

Yes, but only because I googled it years ago to find out what it meant!

WulfWuman · 20/02/2024 18:29

How can a dead lion and some bees be old fashioned/not modern?

Although I suppose if the lion's been lying there dead a long time ...

Cushionsandcaramel · 20/02/2024 18:31

Yes I knew about it, and it has never put me off buying it.

I will miss it. But then I still miss old style Tony the Tiger on Frosties, and that changed about 40 years ago.

BasementJs · 20/02/2024 18:34

I had no idea it was from the bible. I didn’t even know the lion was dead.

If they had put the quotation on the tin now, for the first time, I probably would be less likely to buy it knowing it was from the bible.

Not a modern image that they want to portray?

WulfWuman · 20/02/2024 18:37

But we still have lions and bees. It's not like it's a penny farthing.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 20/02/2024 18:40

Yes I knew. I can't remember where I found out, whether I asked my mother why there was a lion on the tin, or whether it came up during A level (where my English lecturer was very 'up' on telling us about things like this - also explaining the words to hymns....).

And despite being the world's biggest atheist, I am also the world's biggest lover of Golden Syrup, so no problem buying it at all here.

An exclusionary space... 🤯

That was what I thought.

"The story of it coming from religious belief could put the brand in an exclusionary space, especially if it was to go viral on X or TikTok."

What a load of jargony bollocks.

InMySpareTime · 20/02/2024 18:49

It's not just in the Bible, it's also in the Torah and the Quran.
If we're going to boycott anything with biblical phrases associated with them we'll lose quite a lot. The King James Version of the Bible was very quotable.

Horses7 · 20/02/2024 18:54

Yes

No - it’s a favourite and tastes better than other brands.

Pacifybull · 20/02/2024 18:56

Yes, I knew. No, it wouldn’t put me off. I like the original design.

xsquared · 20/02/2024 18:59

@DwightDFlysenhower
Yes, always have known it was from the story of Samson.

No, it will not change whether we buy it or not. Currently we do, but we don't use it very often. Maybe for flapjack and baking sweet treats once in a while and that's about it.

JulesJules · 20/02/2024 19:28

a. Yes I did know, it's common knowledge imo
b. No, makes no difference to wanting to buy golden syrup

eternalopt · 20/02/2024 19:36

Never actually noticed this until today!
