Teen dd used a silicone ear plug but now its gone too far back for us to take out. I think its melted somewhat so its not just one solid piece. What should i do to take it out?

Sorry to revive a dead thread but no call from ENT on Monday/friday. They haven't given a place to contact and dd still feels pain. What to do?

Have you tried a private audiologist? Plenty if you google

yikesanotherbooboo · 26/02/2024 14:49

Can you ring a secretary in the ENT department?

Ring main hospital number and, when put through to switchboard, ask to be connected with the ENT department secretaries; if asked, explain you don’t have a named consultant but it would be the team who were on take last week when you were in A&E.

If you still have no luck, I’d be going back to A&E during office hours as that’s when there should be an ENT team covering A&E admissions/attendamces. Make sure it’s the hospital where ENT is based not just one they cover. I’d also check your hospital’s policy on where 16 year olds receive treatment - in our hospital, the cut off was the summer they finished year 11.

Have you phoned them?

Also return to A&E if concerned.

Opinione · 27/02/2024 06:16

Phone the hospital and ask to be put through to ENT.

It may be that A&E haven't passed the referral over to them. This happened to DS last time he was in A&E, we were waiting from a call that never came because A&E hadn't passed his case over to the specialist department concerned 🤦🏻‍♀️

Coffeeandcrocs · 27/02/2024 08:29

I had a massive chunk of wax removed by a private microsuction place with an ENT nurse for £50..might be worth a try?

trousersearch · 27/02/2024 09:35

Does the A&E hospital have an ENT department?
If not could you find one with both?
This happened to me about 10 years ago. GP referred me to ENT saying it was an emergency. ENT made no contact so I went to a&e. A&E nurse couldn't remove it so I ended up seeing the ENT team in the hospital who used a suction machine to remove it. It took a couple of tries, they also said that if it hadn't come out then, then they'd need to operate.

Problem with those ear plugs is they deteriorate so they'll continue to break up.

Hope you get it sorted soon

This may well not be possible because it’s classed as a foreign body. Someone who works for Specsaver Audiology said upthread that they’re not allowed to deal with foreign bodies/object plus they’re also not allowed to treat under 18’s so OP may find the same with any private microsuction company.

So had a call.... 30th march🥲🥲🥲

Glad you have a date.

Now you know you are definitely in the departments system, phone up and say you will take any cancelled appointment. Let them know how quickly you can get there. There are always on the day cancellations.

See my previous reply .

You don't seem particularly bothered so I can only assume it's not causing your daughter any issues .

dinomirror · 22/03/2024 15:55

Sorry to revive an old thread, we had the appointment today and they couldn't get it out so she has to go under general anaesthetic. Anyone have any experience of this?

Poachedeggavocado · 23/03/2024 19:07

Hello again. Yes this happened to me. I went under, they removed it, I will never ever put a silicone sqidgy ear plug near my ear ever again. I do hope she's okay and not in too much pain?

GoodVibesHere · 23/03/2024 22:16

Oh what a shame they couldn't get it out. I don't have experience sorry.

How are these squidgy ear plugs even allowed, if this can happen.

Bankholidayhelp · 23/03/2024 22:25

One of mine had this. Literally under anesthetic for what must have been seconds.

Went to sort of lobby preop area. I went back to ward. By the time I'd got back DD was hot on my heels. About an hour's recovery time (presume to make sure all okay) and then out

scaredofff · 02/04/2024 04:33

@dinomirror how is your daughter doing now op?

IwishIdidntlikesugar · 02/04/2024 05:20

What sort of ear plugs are getting stuck in ears? Is it like the Loop ones?

Melony75 · 02/04/2024 05:30

@IwishIdidntlikesugar I think they are the ones you mould yourself, like blu-tac, they are soft but harden with time and get fissures and break apart.

IwishIdidntlikesugar · 02/04/2024 05:49

I see, thank you Melony. I had considered that type because I dont find the loops that easy to sleep in but I do worry about bits getting stuck.

Its still in there! They said they would call the following week and they never did. I have been calling the ENT department to follow up the referral but no response.

I would maybe pay privately if you can afford to. NHS is a joke atm.

GenghisCalm · 29/07/2024 20:43

@dinomirror

Has it been removed yet?

dinomirror · 23/08/2024 14:15

Removed in May two days before gcse start
