Teen dd used a silicone ear plug but now its gone too far back for us to take out. I think its melted somewhat so its not just one solid piece. What should i do to take it out?

For audiologists, would it just be spec savers ear wax removal?

No specsavers or other high street test center will/ should perform any form of procedure on an ear with a foreign body lodged inside .

Andthereyougo · 20/02/2024 19:55

Please don’t put tweezers into your dc ears. I really think you’re more likely yo do damage than get anything out.
Children’s A&E is more likely to have the equipment to remove objects from ears.

Go to A&E at Wythenshawe - they have ENT on site and run an emergency ENT clinic every morning where they see referrals from A&E.

Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) - Wythenshawe Hospital (mft.nhs.uk)

My son had blue tac stuck very deep in his ear when little which was removed with crocodile forceps in a&e, but then they checked his other ear and found more there that was too deep to remove … they sent us to a children’s ent with audiology and they tried with suction, but still too deep so he was referred for surgery. It took about a week for his appointment to come through and then it was removed very quickly under general anesthetic

Side note- its so sad to see what the NHS has become! If they can potentially leave dd whos still a 16 year old in pain for weeks, who knows what they are doing to older patients?

Other side note, its seems that if your 16/17 in hospital its a very awkward time. Both receptionist did a slight double take when told DOB. Interestingly, the nurses seemed to adjust their behaviour when talking to dd and told any info to me first despite it being an adult ward- i dont think that it was the correct place for her to be. But i also see the other side to it as a 17 year old drunk teen doesn't belong in the same place as a sick baby. However neither does my dd in the same place as a 65 year old man!

Sorry OP , I didn't to suggest that you would put anything in her ear . It was in response to people suggesting tweezers etc .

If you have already been seen in A&E and referred to ENT , call the hospital tomorrow and ask them to put you through to ENT and ask them what time you need to bring your child in . Do not accept waiting for weeks as an acceptable answer . They need to put her on either tomorrow's clinic list or theatre list.

If she is in pain , you notice any redness , swelling , oozing , smelling please return to A&E and ask for an ENT review . They will have someone on call even out of hours and on weekends .

Any issues straight onto the PALS/ Complaints team .

Dh’s gp gleefully removed the end of a bic pen that had been stuck in his ear for about 10 years!

I would give it a day to see if it settles down, might just be tender after being prodded, and if ok wait for your appointment. If not call 111 again.

susansaucepan · 20/02/2024 20:07

@dinomirror if your child is 16 and still at school she should be looked after In a child setting unless doing so puts other children at risk.

16-18 are transitional years and it is not unusual for staff to still address you both rather than just speak to your DD as if she was an adult even when they are on an Adult ward .

Sleeposaurus · 20/02/2024 20:17

This happened to DD with the swimming ear plugs she has to wear because she has grommets. She is 8 and was seen at children's a and e who managed to suction it out. If it hadn't come out with suction they would have given a referral for ENT.

MyopicBunny · 20/02/2024 20:21

This is awful. I can't believe they have just left it. My 4 year old dd hit her head last week and I was lucky enough to find a minor injuries unit near me. There was literally nobody in there. So they were able to check her over without us having to go to A&E.

dotty12345 · 20/02/2024 20:31

I work for Specsavers audiology, we don't treat under 18's anyway and still send over 18's to A and E for anything stuck in ear, we won't touch it.

Lovefromjuliaxo · 20/02/2024 20:39

I would go private if possible, it’s only a one off appointment. Spire hospitals are very good.

Gross

Why is it gross that the GP was pleased about removing the bit of pen from that poster's DH's ear? Confused

OP, I am sorry the thing is not out of the ear yet! How upsetting to have to wait. I would go private!

Wtf how and why????

Liloandstitch · 20/02/2024 21:03

I've done this many times! Used the round bit of a kirby hair grip to scoop out!

yikesanotherbooboo · 21/02/2024 07:39

Your best plans are either to speak to yr GP , explain that she is in a lot of pain and see if they can arrange an on the day ENT assessment or if it is convenient, the suggestion about Wythenshaw in the knowledge that there are ENT folk on site.

dinomirror · 21/02/2024 14:06

Can you believe its still not out! Went to A&E again at least it has been bumped up to Friday/monday but she is still in major discomfort poor thing with a mock on monday!

Back before Covid and the NHS still worked DH managed to get something stuck in his ear, I don’t remember what. It was over Christmas and he went to the GP as soon as he could and she pulled it out with tweezers there and then. She said it was lovely to be able to actually fix someone’s problem straight away.

GoodVibesHere · 21/02/2024 17:30

I am quite shocked really, that A&E don't have the equipment to remove an item from an ear, and that it can't be done quickly. I mean it must happen fairly often surely? Honestly your poor DD.

Wtf how and why????

Dh had a sore, itchy ear, was on the phone and decided to scratch the inside of it with the black bic pen (I know, gross). When he brought the pen out the end bit was missing, but he wasn’t 100% sure it was there in the first place. i had a look with a torch and couldn’t see anything.

He had ear problems before, and over those 10 years he had more recurring ear problems, he kept saying he could feel something in there, and at least 4 GPs looked in his ears, and each time he told them about the pen end theory and they would look and say there was nothing in there. He would get anti bs to clear it up.

He even had his ears syringed once at the gps and it wasn’t spotted. I would tell him to stop going on about the bloody pen theory as the GPs would have seen it, especially after the syringing!

No idea where the thing was hiding or how they kept missing it, maybe he has odd shaped ears, or the infections hid/disguised it, but one day he went to the nurse with another ear infection, she spotted it, two GPs looked at it unsure whether to remove, but one gave it a go, he brought it home in a sample bottle with a big “I told you!”

dinomirror · 26/02/2024 10:58

Sorry to revive a dead thread but no call from ENT on Monday/friday. They haven't given a place to contact and dd still feels pain. What to do?
