Can anyone inspire me with things to do while on bed rest?

Am really stuck for inspiration.

I love to be busy. But have to have regular bed rest.

I read a lot, watch TV, do Duolingo, sometimes play Xbox games with the children.

But I am bored and fed up about it. And it's likely to always be a feature of my life. So I would love some inspiration of things I could try. I don't mind spending a bit (thankfully I can earn well as my job is sedentary)

Do you like games/puzzles?

If so, I’d recommend downloading the New York Times Games app. Lots of different puzzles every day and it’s about £2.50 a month.

Crochet, jigsaws

I would learn a craft like knitting, crochet, embroidery! I taught myself during lockdown with the help of YouTube videos and knitted baby hats for hospitals.

TeatimeBiscuits · 18/02/2024 15:26

I was going to say knitting. It’s easy to pick up and great fun.

Audiobooks
Do a free course
Volunteer as a befriender if you can keep it up later

AmaryllisChorus · 18/02/2024 15:33

I was also going to say knitting, embroidery or tapestry. They are focused and time consuming but easy to do from bed and really rewarding. Clean too - no likelihood of spilling ink or paint on the bed.

You could sign up for some free online courses - loads of unis have them.

Open garage band or a similar app on your computer and create some music. Download it on Soundcloud!

Write a mini book on a subject you know a lot about that others might find useful and publish it on Amazon. Sell it for 99p and see if you get any takers.

Write a bucket list of things to do when you are off bedrest and open a research file or pinterest page to fill with inspiration - new decor in the home or garden revamp, places to go on holiday - things to see and do once there, best hotels and restaurants etc.

It’s definitely worth the money and easy to spend an hour on there doing the various brain training games.
Particularly recommend Wordle, Connections, The Mini crossword and Spelling Bee.

Something like duolingo?

Hermittrismegistus · 18/02/2024 15:37

Invest in a meta quest.

Family history

Painting by Numbers? (Although you’ll need a butler tray as a desk).

The WhoDunnit Puzzle book (loads on Amazon).

If you are a member of your local library their digital services are great, Libby gives you access to 100’s of magazines. BorrowBox for audiobooks.

Animal crossing on the switch.
Alison courses.
Free open university courses.

PTSDBarbiegirl · 18/02/2024 15:42

Crotchet, knit or cross stich. Start with something easy like a card making set to stitch on. Start doing something with photos from your devices, screenshot and edit, you can make really nice black & white photos, send them off to 'freeprints' or similar and then frame. Hope you get rest and a new hobby!

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 18/02/2024 15:49

Make photo albums

Is there not a silver line charity where you phone old people who are lonely? That might be good.

Imicola · 18/02/2024 19:03

Origami... plenty of free tutorials online!
Colouring books. Drawing. Painting. Collages (is that still a thing?). Making cards. Free online courses. Reading.

It sounds lovely, but when I am ill my voice doesn't work either - but hopefully that will be a lovely idea for someone else!

I think they do a letter writing one.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 19/02/2024 08:26

Do you mean rest as in not allowed to move at all or just not weight bearing?

I’d be worried about my strength and flexibility so if it’s allowed I’d be looking for some appropriate form of bed based exercises.

It's intermittent bed rest. I can exercise within reason most of the time. But when I overdo it or when I am ill my muscles stop working properly and the only solution is rest.

Get a pen for your iPad? I can spend happy hours drawing on mine. Very relaxing.
