Asking for a friend who is revamping the menu for her child friendly cafe.

What items would you like to see on offer for your children?

TIA

MabelMaybe · 16/02/2024 15:31

Eggy bread, milk to drink, no fruit shoots

InTheRainOnATrain · 16/02/2024 15:33

Adult stuff available in half portions

TheBirdintheCave · 16/02/2024 15:33

Milk to drink, toasties, child sized portions of sandwiches with a variety of fillings.

No grated cheese x__x

Glenthebattleostrich · 16/02/2024 15:34

pasta, fruit bags / chopped fruit, toasties, omelette

Hoglet70 · 16/02/2024 15:35

Kids like fish fingers and chips. I would say if they are in a cafe then it's probably meant to be a treat and you should also cater for the people who do let their kids have fruit shoots and beige food unless you are known as being a 'healthy' place in which case I probably wouldn't be in there without my kids as I also like eating rubbish on occasions.

Greensleevevssnotnose · 16/02/2024 15:35

I just had a fish finger sandwich at Waitrose cafe and the kid with us wanted one too.

SecondUsername4me · 16/02/2024 15:35

Sticks of cucumber, carrot and breadsticks/pitta strips with dip

Half sandwiches with fruit cup

Scrambled eggs and toast available all day

Quesedilla (ham and cheese / cheese and veggies etc)

The ability to get a side of something like broccoli or green beans added to any dish

Pesto pasta/bolognese and garlic bread

Warm cheese scone with butter

Exactly

Snowsp · 16/02/2024 15:36

One thing some places for which I think works well is serve the sauce (flavour) in the side. Like waggama and ask often so this. So they can try it but if they don't like it it's not a write off.

Also what's wrong with fruit sh@MabelMaybe soots?

PenguinBall · 16/02/2024 15:36

Tomato pasta
Soy sauce honey chicken with rice
Salmon with rice

These are the only three things my fussy eater is almost guaranteed to eat.

Grin What have you got against grated cheese ? ?
Mudflaps · 16/02/2024 15:37

Just junior sized portions of normal 'adult' meals. My ds is in his 30's now and he never wanted food from the children's menu so we'd end up getting an adult portion and bring a takeaway (lunch) box for the leftovers. My niece was the same, they were fed the same as the adults at home so that's what they wanted when out and it was healthier too.

SecondUsername4me · 16/02/2024 15:37

A family platter would be good too - few flavours of sarnies, a bowl of fries, some cut fruit, veggie sticks all on one tray everyone can pick at.

dancinginthewind · 16/02/2024 15:38

I think as much flexibility as possible. For us, those picnic boxes tended to work well where you could choose one of a couple of types of sandwich and then had a selection of snacks to select.
Pasta always seems to be the most popular food and, if you're cooking it fresh, it's easy to offer it with butter or oil or tomato sauce or a cheese sauce.

SirChenjins · 16/02/2024 15:38

Depends on the cafe - Toasties, Mac and cheese, sandwiches, baguettes, pizza slices.

My DC would have wanted chips and nuggets, fish fingers or sausages as going to a cafe was a treat and so was getting that sort of food (in their eyes). If that was on the menu then nice nuggets please.

No fizzy drinks.

RosaSkyes · 16/02/2024 15:38

I ordered a fab kids plate recently- it was basically a kids mezze board with breadsticks, hummus, some chocolate buttons, a yoghurt, cubes of cheese, cucumber etc on. It was about £4

Seagrassbasket · 16/02/2024 15:38

Beans/scrambled egg on toast
savoury muffins
hoummous and crudités
tomato pasta

I don’t really have a problem with fish fingers etc, but don’t stock fruit shoots!!

TheBirdintheCave · 16/02/2024 15:38

@EatingCalamari @NewName24 Please watch a toddler attempt to eat a sandwich filled with grated cheese 😂

They do spread it around a lot if very little! I've got a little niece who adores cheese but I'd say only half goes in her mouth!

This is a good idea.

Two sizes of child portions would be amazing so there isn't loads of waste after my 5yr old has been served something that tries to cater for kids up to about 12.

Apart from that, plainer sandwiches (ham, cheese, jam) rather than adding pickle, mayo etc to them all please! DD loves "typical" child dishes like beans on toast, pasta in tomato sauce, fish fingers & chips etc, but as she gets older it'd be great if it was possible to order a smaller portion of an adult meal like others have suggested.
