Asking for a friend who is revamping the menu for her child friendly cafe.

What items would you like to see on offer for your children?

TIA

I definitely agree with the small plates idea, but not just for children! Have often just fancied a smaller meal when out but don't want a huge portion.

just don't call it a kids menu and let anyone order from it.

Use decent quality bread for sandwiches. A soft play nearish me uses such poor quality bread for their sandwiches, the nearby McDonald's seems like a healthier option.

Plain sandwich options (just ham, tuna mayo, egg, roast chicken in our case on bread with no bits), no salad in the sandwich
Crudites (DD is obsessed with cucumber/pepper/carrot/tomatoes)
On toast things - egg, beans, spaghetti hoops
Mac and cheese or a kid friendly pasta
A healthier chicken nugget type option - like homemade goujons or similar
Sausages - DD will always have sausages if available

I like it when they have a kids lunchbox type thing, we go to a place that has it in a paper bag that is printed with all sorts of activities on it (woodsearch, join the dots etc). You get a sandwich choice, pom bears, biscuit or cake, fruit, crudites and a drink. Very popular.

I don’t have a fussy eater but in an unfamiliar place the food needs to be recognisable otherwise she can be put off easily.

Sticks of cucumber, carrot and breadsticks/pitta strips with dip

Half sandwiches with fruit cup

Scrambled eggs and toast available all day

Quesedilla (ham and cheese / cheese and veggies etc)

The ability to get a side of something like broccoli or green beans added to any dish

Pesto pasta/bolognese and garlic bread

Warm cheese scone with butter

Exactly this ⬆️

Secondusername's menu is great. Love the idea to add broccoli - when we go to a chain pub, my ds always chooses corn on the cob over beans, etc., so having different veg options would be fab.

We go to the 'lounge' brand a lot because they do gluten free for my DD, but also on top of the sausages, burger, nuggets do kids cooked breakfast, pancakes with fruit, grilled chicken, falafel burger, beans on toast - choice and actual dietary variety.

They also do hummus pots with bread sticks/veg and a fancy juice carton.

Finger sandwiches
French toast
Dippy egg
Pizza with no "green bits" in the tomato sauce
Plain pasta with butter

I think this thread shows how different children are. I strongly disagree with @Flev about plain sandwiches as DS (2yo) won’t eat a cheese sandwich without pickle in it. The number of times I’ve ended up eating the white bread plain cheese sandwich from the kids lunchbox whilst he tucks into cheese and chutney I’ve ordered is depressingly high. He’ll also eat an entire sandwich, half wouldn’t be enough. But if he’s having a “fussy” day I want typical kids food (fish fingers, pasta) even though he eats what we eat generally (curry, smoked salmon). Also the person who is happy to spend £15+ on food for their infant is nuts.

And yes to child sized (preferably metal) cutlery. So often my son has to eat with a teaspoon.

NameChange30 · 19/02/2024 08:19

Dairy and soya free options. A reasonably large minority of young children have allergies and these are the main two. If you could make the bread and spread dairy and soya free that would be fantastic. Bonus points for DF and SF treats.

Plain sandwiches and wraps. Cups of squash. Pizza.

I'd like as many options as there are for adults. Adults should be able to order plain cheese, and children, cheese and pickle, in a half serving if needed.
