Fortunately they had plenty left but they did leave it a bit late. More than I got though!

Better late than never

DreamingInPhosphorescence · 14/02/2024 21:34

I would have been happy with Tesco’s flowers.

Saying that, dh did buy a decent bottle of wine and cooked dinner, so I can’t complain.

Irridescantshimmmer · 14/02/2024 21:36

Haha the first thought I had was "it's a funeral",

forgot it's valentine's Day

Ladybrrrd · 14/02/2024 21:37

I didn't get DHs present until 5pm today, after work, and mine won't arrive until Monday!

We went shopping for dinner together, cooked together, and will watch a film.

Nice day. Xx

Our local Tesco was very busy this morning with men buying flowers and cards.
They reminded me it was valentine's days

Eddieegg · 14/02/2024 21:42

It’s nice to support local florists but realistically lots of people can only afford the money/convenience of supermarket flowers. I don’t see the issue tbh?

flowerpotmike · 14/02/2024 22:30

I think it's sweet. I took a long train journey today, saw lots of people carrying flowers at various stations. It made me smile.

I too think it's very sweet. I particularly like it if they are the builder type, high-vis jacket, work boots, blokey-bloke types, it's adorable to see them buying flowers for their sweethearts, Valentine's or not. For all I know they could be getting flowers for their mother but it's adorable.

I dropped into the Tesco near me at around 6.30 pm this evening and the flower shelves had been virtually emptied.

I personally liked the flowers still left which were very reasonably-priced tulips in yellow and white and lovely daffodils, but I don't think that they were what the men rushing in and looking anxious were hoping for.

The florist in Liverpool Street Station was having an absolute ball when I passed the stall about 20 minutes later. There was a long, long queue of men anxious to snap up a proper "Valentine's Bouquet".

I had a look to see how much they were being sold for - they were all around £75/£85.

WhatNoUsername · 14/02/2024 23:28

Does it matter. I went out and got DHs card at about 5 this afternoon. As long as he gets it by the time I intend to give it to him (which was this evening after work) I don't see that it matters if I got it today, a few days ago, or three months ago.

Hmmmbetterchangethis · 14/02/2024 23:39

I got chocolates, a Lindt bunny and a card. Apparently the shop had sold out of flowers.

He brings me tea every morning before he goes to work and he happily sees me work part time while he covers all bills, mortgage and holidays because I don’t enjoy working full time.
I’d be happy with supermarket flowers and equally happy without!

This - it’s just a bit of fun. It really annoys me when people say showing love every day is more important. It’s true; but that’s not a reason not to enjoy Valentine’s Day. It just gives the impression that they’re annoyed an effort isn’t made for them, even if that’s not the case. It’s how it comes across.

WandaWonder · 15/02/2024 00:29

Because it gives something for someone to put on MN?

Because they bought them on the day?

To save someone having a tantrum because their bff got something better?

Lavenderandbrown · 15/02/2024 00:57

I was in the grocery tonite and men of all ages buying flowers candy champagne and desserts. Ran into the same gentlemen in several areas of the store. I loved it. To me it doesn’t matter if it’s 5 pm. They are doing it. They are picking out tokens of love. Some really debating the flowers and dessert choices. Young and old. Me? I tend to be a bit meh about Valentine’s Day because wow we just did Christmas but this year it clicked for me…sent oh so perfect cards to my young adult dc and card and gift to DH. I try to talk dh out of valentines but he won’t have it. I bought him a mock turtleneck which I do not like and don’t like him wearing and I said…. Nothing says love like a mock turtleneck. I received flowers (from the grocery) and lovely card. I think it’s touching to see shoppers picking out a little something to say will you be my valentine.

Agree about buying from a florist, often you'll be supporting a small business.

I wish mine hadn’t bought them from a florist. I had to go onto his banking yesterday to transfer funds and saw he’d spent £78 on a bunch of flowers and a box of chocolates (and they sent the wrong ones) to be delivered to me. There were similar (actually a bit nicer) bunches in m&s for £16 🫤

Duckingella · 15/02/2024 12:29

Im ill so last night we ate pizza (DH cooked) watched reruns of house and had some homemade Nutella cheesecake.

Better than flowers that's end up in the bin anyway

NDerbys32 · 15/02/2024 12:42

We have a pact that I would normally buy flowers on the 15th - when they're reduced.
However, this year, I bought them the day before as I saw a bunch of pink roses that looked excellent value, and we had an M and S meal for two last night.

I worked shifts for 30 yrs too, and was often one of those buy really late, or at stupid o'clock the next morning.

Married 37 yrs. She's more interested in my baking and cooking than Val's day.

It's just a day. You do you.

Why did they leave it late?

Buying on the way to their date with their gf so they are fresh rather than sat around all day at their work?
