Well it's true. All that avocado and sourdough. They should be taking to the beaches to turn boats around. And close borders. And then the government will reward them with affordable housing. 🧐

Seems to be a thinly veiled attempt to punt the message that if you don't vote Tory, you deserve all you get. The power of messaging.

What?

Ok some people could afford a house if they saved...but it is only a tiny percentage that are earning enough but not already buying a house. There is a chunk below them that can't.

IvorTheEngineDriver · 14/02/2024 10:27

Given the Tories total inability under four Prime Ministers to cut the immigration figures, you have to admire his courage for advocating it as a reason to vote Tory, even in the Daily Telegraph!😀

easylikeasundaymorn · 14/02/2024 10:36

I mean immigration is one possible cause of not having enough housing, as is the fact we aren't building enough new housing and so many properties are empty but strangely enough it doesn't mention the other huge contribution to the housing crisis - people living longer and older people under-occupying homes.

Would it run an equally stupid article mocking young people for not understanding cause and effect if the poll had instead been "do you want your grandparents/parents to die?"

Because let's face it that's the main way people who aren't currently on the housing ladder have a chance of getting on it.

easylikeasundaymorn · 14/02/2024 10:40

Apart from anything else it doesn't even make sense....a small minority of people "voting" in a poll about immigration doesn't actually have any effect on immigration, therefore even if the article was right and immigration was the sole reason for the lack of housing there's no way young people could be "blamed" for this.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 14/02/2024 10:43

The other reason around here easylikeasundaymorn is that all the traditional "starter homes" and maybe the next step (so 2 bed semis, 2-3 bed small detached houses) were on quite big plots with nice gardens.

The local executive 4/5-bed new builds are on smaller plots, so rather than move out of starter homes, people have extended them and stayed there.

It's almost impossible to buy around here unless you're a couple.

Ahh but you shouldn't be buying a 2+ bed property as a single person.

So the real problem is all single people whether young or old....

🙄

They're so out of touch. Unless you're on a salary way above the average, whilst wage increases don't keep up with inflation combined with soaring rent, energy and food costs, how does he think that young people will even be able to afford to keep putting away the SAME small amount each month, never mind factor in increasing it every year because every year the pot you need to save for your deposit only gets BIGGER, when it should be reducing.

Augustus40 · 14/02/2024 10:48

The far right Telegraph showing itself to be totally out of touch with today's world. No change there then!

MissyB1 · 14/02/2024 10:48

Well my 28 year old is a qualified radiographer, and single. It’s impossible for him to buy even a small flat here. It’s not just affording the mortgage, it’s being able to save enough of a deposit. He just doesn’t earn enough, hence he’s looking at moving to Australia where his wages will be double.

MyopicBunny · 14/02/2024 10:48

Why are you surprised? Tory policy begins and ends with 'If you're poor, it's your own fault'. Neil Kinnock's speech had it bang on.

I am not sure why so many people choose not to realise this and keep on voting for them 🤷🏻‍♀️

CurlyhairedAssassin · 14/02/2024 10:49

im in no debt and I plan on moving in with my GF soon in order to start a family. She'll not have to worry about money problems cause I have that all sorted.

Oh the naiivete of youth! 😂

DanceMumTaxi · 14/02/2024 10:50

In my town all the starter homes have been bought up by landlords and turned into student housing so first time buyers are forced to move away.

Hope he's looked VERY closely at housing costs in Australia. It's not much different to here in places like Sydney.

He knows Sydney is one of the most expensive cities in the world, I don’t think he’d be looking to move there.

Get off your high horse and engage your brain. There might be some exceptions cases where shagging around and excessive number of holidays prevent people affording housing but it's not the systemic issue here.

From someone who did buy in Central London, with no family help and saving while renting but can actually see wider issues. Also enjoyed a fair bit of shagging around and amazing holidays at the same time!

28 is late to start saving for a deposit. I'd saved mine by that age - and whilst renting. Where is all his salary going?

In your 20s most people can slum it by living in a cheap house share and save most of their salary. It gets harder to save once you hit your 30s and have a family and/or want a higher standard of living.

the cheapest 1 bed flat in my town (small bog standard town in wales so not london prices) is £180000. I did a calculator as a first time buyer earning £25k with a 10% deposit of £18k.
Mortgage calculator said the the most i could borrow (anonymously so none of my personal details in that could affect it and i ticked no to load/CCs/Dependants etc) is £98k meaning total property price of £116k

That means that a young person on a fairly good wage for round here would not be able to buy anything.

But yes coffees and avocado on toast is the reason why!!!
