Little moons

Bought something called little moons today and just tried it. I didn't read it properly and thought it was little ice cream things in chocolate. I got the coconut ones.

Well it turns out I've tried something called mochi for the first time. Totally freaked me out biting into it. Strange texture. Can't quite decide if I like them.

Anyone else tried these?

Oh I love mochi! Aldi's ones are ok, and a bit cheaper. You might prefer the chocolate brownie covered ice cream balls that are in Aldi though!

Oh. My. God.

I'm going to Aldi tomorrow.

Mochi is good.
I buy the Little Moons when on offer otherwise they’re expensive.
Passion Fruit and Mango and the Popcorn ones are most popular here.
Welcome to the of Mochi 😋

Popcorn? I had no idea there were so many flavours.

What's the deal with mochi? Is it always around ice cream or do you eat it in other ways?

I like the jelly sweet version rather than the ice cream version. I got them in Tk Maxx a while ago. The milk flavour was really nice.

Yozzer87 · 13/02/2024 20:01

Should say, they weren't Little Moons, they were just mochi sweets.

mrskimsneakattack · 13/02/2024 20:04

Weirdly I bought some pistachio ones in Tesco earlier. I've had the passionfruit ones before and they freaked me out a bit but I lurve pistachio so I'm giving them another try

I've not had the ice-cream ones.

Never give them to anyone who can't chew properly.

Oh dear god!

Thank you for the heads up. Added to the list of things, along with marshmallows, not to give to my toddler.

I love them, but I think the coconut flavour ones are the least good - try the passionfruit or the chocolate.

I always cut them up for myself since reading that article. Yo sushi and itsu sell them but I don't think they have ice-cream in theirs.

LilBus · 13/02/2024 20:09

Funny I just tried these for the first time today also! Awful awful 🤮

InsidiousRasperry · 13/02/2024 20:10

Ooh I love the popcorn or passion fruit and mango ones!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 13/02/2024 20:11

They're ok. 18yo dd loves them!

Shnowdrops · 13/02/2024 20:11

Something else I haven't seen for ages is the Ben and Jerry's cookie dough balls. They sold the little balls of cookie dough in a bag on their own and I bloody loved them.

I dig the cookie dough out of the tub and leave the ice cream 😶 It's just so perfumed and horrible.

Horrible I hate the texture on the wrapper. Also dislike Vietnamese summer rolls for the same reason, it's gloooy gelatin. My kids love them.

I don’t think traditionally in Japan Mochi does have ice cream inside. Just something sweet. I think the ice cream Mochi is maybe a bastardised UK version of. Someone more knowledgeable than me might know for sure though…?
Either way it’s bloody delicious ha ha.

Ice cream mochi is a fusion dish invented in the 70s by a Japanese-American businesswoman.

Traditionally sweet mochi is filled with anko, red bean paste. It can be savoury too! I love it.

Shnowdrops · 13/02/2024 18:40

Nothing else sweet in the house and I'm seriously considering peeling them for the ice cream 😂

I have some and this is exactly what I’ve been doing! Flabby gelatinous weirdness is not for me.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 14/02/2024 20:42

Love the stuff.

My actual favourite is strawberry daifuku, which is red bean paste wrapped around a strawberry and then mochi over the top.

The same things that put people off are exactly why I like it.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 14/02/2024 20:42

I don't like Little Moons. I also bought the coconut ones when I first saw them (couple of summers ago) I was really excited as I love anything coconut flavoured, but the outer texture is gross.

DD loves the Mochi sweets and has one in her packed lunch every day. I buy big bags from our amazing Chinese / Asian supermarket in the city, which work out really good value.

mylittleyumyum · 15/02/2024 10:10

Ball sacks. Little sweet ball sacks. (I like them)

Yes, I thought they were horrible! I bought the plain ones, but my description would be like eating a cold, dusty, tough piece of pancake, wrapped round a ball of ice cream! Nope! Threw most of them away!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 15/02/2024 10:21

Not liked in this house.

Dd had them but didn’t like them, and the stuff on the outside stuck to her brace. I thought they were horrible and gave them to ds.

He didn’t like them either and threw them away. His car sniffed them and walked off. And this is one greedy cat we’re talking about.

Tatonka · 15/02/2024 10:32

So good! It's just icecream or sorbet wrapped in jelly

pictoosh · 15/02/2024 10:34

thorneyislanddoris · 13/02/2024 18:55

Can't stand them. They're gross.

And I'm not a fussy eater.

Same. Will eat anything, don't like these. They're weird.

Just goes to show how we differ though.
