Big fat doughy American pancakes have no place being served on shrove Tuesday. I hope you feel ashamed of yourself.

Totally agree. Simple crepes with lemon and sugar and maybe some fruit. 😋

Redshoeblueshoe · 13/02/2024 12:33

YANBU. I'm with you

PheobeBebe · 13/02/2024 12:34

YANBU at all!

absolutely right

dudsville · 13/02/2024 12:35

Also, why did we start calling crepes pancakes, it just muddles things up!

Crepe is a French word. We always called them pancakes and there was no confusion.

We also called drop scones (Scotch pancakes) pancakes and never got mixed up.

Both are delicious, although my preference is to make the fluffy style pancakes small (as is the Scottish tradition), and if your American style pancakes are doughy then you're doing them wrong.

TiaSeeya · 13/02/2024 12:39

Yes American buttermilk shite is a fucking disgrace on this Holy Day.

Prawncow · 13/02/2024 12:40

Lemon and sultana scotch pancakes rule

<runs away>

Pipplet · 13/02/2024 12:49

Pancakes for pancake day (small, fat ones, but not doughy).
Crepes are flat and floppy and horrible if they get cold, so really difficult to make lots of for pancake day! You'd need a crepe slave who is willing to stand at the pan continuously producing them but never getting to sit down with everyone?
I'm Scottish which I think makes a difference. But I have English cousins who refer to crepes as pancakes, which gets confusing! American pancakes seem to be another thing again.

I am the pancake slave. I serve one for each person, then do one for me. After I've eaten mine I'll begin again. They just have to learn patience. And it's worth it because crêpe pancakes are the almighty

UnravellingTheWorld · 13/02/2024 12:56

Can we be best friends?

JellyComb · 13/02/2024 12:58

I don't think much to those South African pancakes. They taste Crepe. 😁

KeepSmiling89 · 13/02/2024 12:59

sitting eating a delicious blueberry pancake (big and fat style) from Asda...still not changing my mind about them being delicious

mitogoshi · 13/02/2024 13:08

Sauvblanctime · 13/02/2024 13:10

I am 70 and have always called them pancakes and as a child that is what we had on pancake day with lemon and sugar rolled up, I loved them and still do. We called the little fat ones drop scones, scotch pancakes or american pancakes, but to me they are not pancakes! We have never called them crepes on this country until relatively recently.

piscofrisco · 13/02/2024 13:21

You are very right

Caswallonthefox · 13/02/2024 13:34

My ds got american pancake mix last year. I said I'd make them if he bought it. He bought it and claimed he didn't know which one to get. Lemon and sugar did not go well with them.
This year we have british pancake mix.
I also like lemon and sultana scotch pancakes, but my local lidls isn't stocking them anymore.

Scottish here too, I’m not sure the difference between scotch pancakes/drop scones and American ones though? Seem v similar to me…

PossumintheHouse · 13/02/2024 14:46

You’re mad if you don’t have both.
Smaller, fatter ones with bacon and maple syrup for mains. Larger, thin ones with lemon and sugar for dessert.

FortunataTagnips · 13/02/2024 15:35

You are 100% right, OP. Pancake day = pancakes, and in England at least, pancakes have traditionally meant crepes.

Scotch pancakes / American pancakes / drop scones need to be identified separately.
