Big fat doughy American pancakes have no place being served on shrove Tuesday. I hope you feel ashamed of yourself.

You’re mad if you don’t have both.
Smaller, fatter ones with bacon and maple syrup for mains. Larger, thin ones with lemon and sugar for dessert.

Now you’re talking 👌

Caswallonthefox · 13/02/2024 18:52

American pancakes taste nothing like drop scones/ scotch pancakes.

Lovelydovey · 13/02/2024 18:58

We had some lovely buckwheat galettes with savoury fillings for lunch. Then fat American pancakes for dessert after dinner Wight maple syrup, cream and fruit. Yum!

Scootboot · 13/02/2024 19:00

No need to crepe slave. Just make a whole batch, pop a bit of baking parchment between each one on a plate and pop in the oven to keep warm.

You'd need a crepe slave who is willing to stand at the pan continuously producing them but never getting to sit down with everyone?

That would be me then 😂

Yup this!!!

Citrusandginger · 13/02/2024 21:50

DH is my crepe slave. All cooked & layered with greaseproof on a low heat. He's a keeper.

Lemon & sugar all the way.

Wictc · 13/02/2024 21:51

Pancake day is for pancakes only. I only make them once a year. How will you fold prawn and watercress filling with Gruyère cheese (a la my grandmother’s traditional 70s recipe) with an American pancake?!!

As for ‘pancake mix’, what the hell is this. It’s literally flour, eggs, milk - surely it’s more effort finding and making the box stuff?!!

lalaloopyhead · 13/02/2024 21:53

People have American style pancakes on pancake day?? I'm not sure how I feel about that, seems wrong somehow....
I've never called a normal pancake a crepe though either, so I have obviously been living a sheltered life.

DappledThings · 13/02/2024 22:11

I'll join you on the hill.

Proper, thin ones all the way.

Terfosaurus · 13/02/2024 22:15

According to Google pancakes (the thin English ones) are different to crepes.
Whatever you call them they are better than American ones.

DS is my pancake slave. He cooks them one at a time and eats one when it's his turn.

No need to crepe slave. Just make a whole batch, pop a bit of baking parchment between each one on a plate and pop in the oven to keep warm.

No need to separate. I put them on a plate covered with foil which is sat on a barely simmering pan of water. Kept them hot to the last one (which was the first scraggy one made).

Oh yes, the original point of the post. Thin pancakes all the way on Pancake Day. With lemon and sugar. Delicious 😊

GetWhatYouWant · 13/02/2024 22:30

I've never called pancakes crepes except in France or if having crepes Suzette. I am 60 though. But pancakes on Shrove Tuesday are 100% large thin ones, best with lemon juice and sugar, or golden syrup and lemon juice.
What's pancake mix? The batter is only flour, egg, milk mixed together! American pancakes have no place on pancake day.

The pancake mix is slightly handy if you're making pancakes in a church hall with only an electric crepe plate for facilities, because you don't need to measure or whisk - just fill up to the line and shake.

In all other circumstances, yes it's a rip off.

timetorefresh · 13/02/2024 22:49

I'm pretty partial to a poffertje personally... Or a dozen

SophiaElise · 13/02/2024 22:50

You're absolutely right. Crepes or pass.

tabulahrasa · 13/02/2024 23:01

Scotch pancakes, because they’re way nicer... and I’m Scottish... so...

Damnloginpopup · 14/02/2024 07:34

Make your pancake, stick it between two plates facing inwards, Mae more, stick them, keep at it. They keep warm, they steam themselves and they are soft enough and floppy enough to roll. And you can make a large batch in no time then sit and eat together.

It's really not that hard.

Aprichor · 14/02/2024 07:52

I’m in team thin pancakes for pancake day, however they are not crêpes. Crêpes have melted butter and sugar in the batter. Pancakes are just flour, eggs and milk.

Ifailed · 14/02/2024 07:54

Why is the first one always crap, but the rest perfect?

Aprichor · 14/02/2024 07:56

I’m the pancake slave in my house but I make them all in advance and stack them on a plate, cover, then microwave the stack when we’re ready to eat them. No need for greaseproof etc. When I used to make them in smaller quantities I’d make them as we ate them but I make over 30 these days

So what am I making with flour eggs milk and a little melted butter ( I find they stick less that way) ?

And it's a pancake - American ones are more like crumpets

When stacking do you put anything in between the Pancakes?

How long do you heat for?

BouleDeSuif · 14/02/2024 08:17

Yes. I made Nigella's recipe yesterday and they were lovely.
