This “humanisation” of dogs has got ridiculous

Had lunch in a chain restaurant yesterday. Two couples came in with smallish dogs. No problem with that as the restaurant is dog friendly however, they insisted on having high chairs for the dogs when their meal came as they had been holding the dogs on their laps until then. The waitress refused but they went and got them anyway so we had these shoved next to our table with a restless dog breathing and being uncomfortable in the high chair very close to us.
Today I get on an intercity train and a woman boards with a medium size dog and puts it on the seat next to her across from me at a table. The person who had booked that seat then turned up and the woman said what was she supposed to do with the dog as it couldn’t go on the floor! It did but was clearly distressed and couldn’t settle, poor thing.
I think putting animals in these situations is so unfair on them and also on others but it seems to be very common these days for people to treat their animal as if it is a human.

I don't think it's a thing - dogs in highchairs.

Only OP has seen this happen.

I completely believe this happens. Some dog owners who shop at a nearby Sainsburys use the parent and child spaces for parking when they take their dogs shopping. Even when there are umpteen normal parking spaces beside their cars. They clearly equate their dogs with human children.
I wish more shops would ban dogs, can't imagine any dogs like shopping.

I've never seen it either but I have seen similar things, like dogs riding in a baby's pram...
I fully believe that this happens. People are VERY weird about their dogs.

I posted some images upthread from Google. It appears to be an actual thing, though the examples online were of high chairs specifically made for dogs (rather than putting dogs in high chairs made for human babies).

A neighbour takes a dog to the park in a pram. The dog is elderly and can not walk very far, so the pram allows a walk in the park to happen. Not everyone has a car.

You really shouldn't put your dogs where children have been.

BitOutOfPractice · 13/02/2024 19:13

Thanks for giving us permission to feel as we feel @CarterBeatsTheDevil 😉

The point of this thread is the fact that those of us not mad keen on dogs have less and less opportunity to be in dog-free spaces - that choice is being taken away.

case in point this week alone: as well as the dog in a baby sling in Tesco last night, I’ve also been squeezed up at the bar trying to order a drink next to a bloke sitting on a barstool with a drooly medium sized dog on his lap in a very busy Friday night bar, slobbering over me (the dog not the man though he’s clearly so idiotic I wouldn’t have put it past him!). Where’s the joy in that for the dog?

Blakessevenrideagain · 13/02/2024 19:14

I can well believe it. On a local dog FB group, a particular dog is taken for cafe breakfasts and sits on cushions so he can eat from a plate at the table.

I love dogs, take my lovely dog on holiday, do lots of things but plates at a table, umm...no...on upholstered chairs..no..
Outside seats at cafes. Paws stay on the floor.

RampantIvy · 13/02/2024 19:20

I would not be returning to any food business that allowed idiots to put their dogs in a high chair.

I wonder what environmental health would have to say about that?

AlwaysGinPlease · 13/02/2024 19:20

So, you think it is OK to put dogs in high chairs in eating establishments?

Blakessevenrideagain · 13/02/2024 19:22

I would like to see the regulation of service dogs so that only trained, registered, and regulated dogs can access everywhere. At present, you can buy a card/ harness/ vest on Amazon that looks official. There are obviously official guide dogs, but a whole raft of dogs are termed assistance or 'emotional support' without any need for formal training or proof of requirement by owners. We had locally, a case of a drunk/junkie hanging an 'emotional support dog' over his shoulder in Tesco by the neck collar!! Poor dog was terrified.

I have a dog, and she goes most places with me, but not where or when it's inappropriate.

I am aware dogs aren't to blame.

But I'm making the point that a lot of people are using them as a substitute

It's a statistical fact that there is a huge epidemic of loneliness in Britain, which has received a some media attention recently. Unfortunately not everyone has a loving partner or close family to give them company. Therefore dogs (and of course cats) give these people vital companionship. Some of the PP's who dislike dogs may find themselves in that position one day.

Yes good point...I think loneliness must also play a big part

Blossomed · 13/02/2024 19:28

John Lewis now let dogs in and I recently saw a dog cock it’s leg up in the bedding section 🙄

those of us who don't like dogs may well find ourselves in that position but many of us wouldn't get a dog for company. I prefer to join a club and put myself out in the world rather than pandering to the needs of a dog. I am sure they are wonderful companions but I really do prefer the company of human beings.

I doubt OPs story is true so I wouldn’t worry too much. Seriously, do people believe this? 🤣

herewegoagainy · 13/02/2024 19:34

People I know who spoil their dogs most are parents with adult children.

Honestly some of the things I've seen working somewhere dog friendly, I can absolutely believe it tbh.

There's just a growing number of people who think they should be able to do what they want, regardless of the impact on other people and act like they're the ones being wronged when someone objects to being impacted, usually while demanding that they are treated with the respect they flat out refuse to show anyone else.

I've had to deal with complaints from people who don't like the way a dog, a child or indeed an adult is behaving and approach them and ask that they modify their behaviour (or those they're in charge of) to show consideration for the people they're sharing the space with.
I've had people rip into me for that, and other people rip into me because I didn't do enough - I'm not responsible for other people's behaviour, they are. But in the 'staff' you've got someone who everyone can shout their displeasure at because they know it won't (or will rarely) lead to a confrontation and if it does, they'll come out on top because 'customer service'. So whether the complaint is reasonable or not, or the behaviour is reasonable or not in situations of public places that are staffed, the only people getting shit for it are the staff.
One of the pitfalls of the customer is always right is that means every customer expects to be treated that way regardless of their own behaviour.

I'm a dog lover but quite frankly I'm getting fed up of tripping over them, listening to them bark and whine, being snapped at because I have the temerity to deliver the food or drinks ordered to the table, being told off because I won't allow a dog into a dog free space (or being balled out because I ask them to move having seated themselves in the dog free area) or insist for dogs to be removed from the dog friendly area because someone wants to sit there but not near a dog. And that's just at work, I have a whole other lot of stuff I'm fed up with in daily life!

There's unreasonable on both sides of this argument, some of them own dogs and some of them don't, the common denominator is humans who can be so self absorbed and refuse to treat others with respect yet demand they're treated well. With those types who are dog owners, the dog is simply an extension of themselves.

AlwaysGinPlease · 13/02/2024 19:36

@TheTimeIsNowMaybeNow I don't believe they were tbh. Never seen that and have always had dogs, always eaten out with them. Not seen it once.

No people don't have children for a variety of reasons. Sometimes it's taken out of their hands due to infertility or unable to find a decent partner. Other times they choose not to have a child for various reasons but our innate biological urge means we often want things to care for.

Hence.. ‘(if possible)’

But people with dogs aren’t limited to those you describe. So your post still doesn’t make sense
