This “humanisation” of dogs has got ridiculous

Had lunch in a chain restaurant yesterday. Two couples came in with smallish dogs. No problem with that as the restaurant is dog friendly however, they insisted on having high chairs for the dogs when their meal came as they had been holding the dogs on their laps until then. The waitress refused but they went and got them anyway so we had these shoved next to our table with a restless dog breathing and being uncomfortable in the high chair very close to us.
Today I get on an intercity train and a woman boards with a medium size dog and puts it on the seat next to her across from me at a table. The person who had booked that seat then turned up and the woman said what was she supposed to do with the dog as it couldn’t go on the floor! It did but was clearly distressed and couldn’t settle, poor thing.
I think putting animals in these situations is so unfair on them and also on others but it seems to be very common these days for people to treat their animal as if it is a human.

On Monday, I took my son (8) to a local cafe which is inside a museum with some green space outside. We were eating our food and a cocker spaniel came bounding in the back door, stole our Cornish pasty and ran off again, quick as a flash. DS was really upset. The cafe owner was really kind and replaced our food.
When we left, we saw dog owner in the middle of the green, the dog was running round going crazy near a busy road, she had her face in phone ignoring both dog and a small toddler on the floor. I went and told her what happened and she just shrugged, told me to just P off and wandered off. Wasn’t the dog’s fault in this instance, bad owner. Made me so cross though!

jackstini · 13/02/2024 12:59

Not a chance I would eat anywhere that allowed dogs in high chairs, and would 100% have asked the dog owner on the train to move it from my booked and paid for seat!

It's unhygienic and unfair on anyone with allergies to get hair all over

I am not against dogs in general - used to have one, but never put him on a train or bus seat or ask for a high chair; because I'm considerate of others

My local supermarkets allow dogs on leads now

What supermarket chain is that? They’re not allowed in Tesco, M&S and sainsburys according to their written policy. I assume not allowed in Asda either but can’t see it on their website.

I’m not sure why so many dog owners feel the need to prove to people like you how ‘good’ they are. I’ll do what I want with my dogs…I’m not justifying myself to you.

Incidentally, some idiot almost kicked my dog out of the way today. Was that you spreading kindness and making the world a better place?

A fine example of dog brain. Keep your dog out of people's way and it won't be a problem, will it?

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 13/02/2024 13:07

That's in a specifically dog friendly designated area of the cafe by the way, which has it's own entrance so if you can't stand dogs you wouldn't have to park your oh so clean I'm sure arse on a chair

I have lived with dogs for most of my life and love them dearly, but I would put money on my arse being cleaner than pretty much any dog's arse

Can I kick a kid that is in my way too?

I love dogs. Which is why I don't make the self-absorbed mistake of thinking that they have human needs. They don't. They have dog needs, and it's cruel to treat them like humans.

Hurrah for common sense!

This, absolutely.

vitahelp · 13/02/2024 13:13

Dogs in high chairs?! I've heard it all now!

Bladwdoda · 13/02/2024 13:14

I agree 100%
same with all domestic/pet animals really. They’re increasingly in human spaces and people are expected to be happy with it even if they aren’t particularly dog lovers.

Luckily most pets owners are sensible but the few that aren’t seem to be increasing.

For me personally cats are a much bigger issue.

TW

I don't know if anyone else has noticed on here the number of posts titled things like, my little girl has just died or I've just lost my little boy...I often see that and think of my gosh, how horrendous and assume their child has died. Then I see it's been posted in the pets section and actually their dog or cat has died. Really unnerving.

If it is posted in the pet section, then so what?
It is pretty shit to nit pick the choice of words of someone who have just suffered a loss.
If you take issue with such posts, then take it up with MN.

Photo of the dogs in a high chair? You must have taken one.

Yes, please post a photos OP. How could anyone resist taking a photo of a dog in a high chair?
Or perhaps you were "too shocked" as many mumsnetters seem to be in these kind of situations.
I've never seen anyone sit a dog at a table in public.
Amazing that it happened to you 2 days running.

I have seen a dog in our local Aldi bit all the staff were very young and I think nervous about approaching the owner.

Well a few months ago Aldi staff objected to it and it ended up in the papers with some couple trying to play the victim about their “assistance” dog that was sniffing food being banned.

So I can’t blame the younger staff as these type of people are automatically going to be very challenging but they need at least one experienced manager on each shift who can speak up

Couple banned from Aldi after taking assistance dogs into shop

Amanda went in with her own dog after Lee had been asked to leave, and she was also told to get out. Both are now banned

You just proved a point there, but I suspect not the point you were intending to prove.

It's pretty juvenile (not to mention insulting) to conflate people who don't want dogs to be allowed absolutely everywhere with people who would be cruel to a dog.

HipHop63 · 13/02/2024 13:15

The world has gone totally nuts. Dogs in highchairs, dogs in rucksacks, dogs in pushchairs or prams, dogs in handbags. Noooo! Its just not normal.

ZittiEBuoni · 13/02/2024 13:17

We have one doughty local cafe that is still dog-free. A couple stood at the door recently and asked if it was all right to bring 'two very well-behaved girls in'. 'Of course,' said the owner. They then came in with two golden retrievers!

He gave them short shrift. I think some people forget that not everyone anthropomorphises dogs.

DyslexicPoster · 13/02/2024 13:22

I can not belive any restaurant or cafe would let someone sit their dog in a high chair? Surely not?

Honest question, why would anyone eat in a place with such low standards? Would you ever go back?

My dog are other dogs shit. It rolled in fox shit. It ate its own vomit. Unless dogs don't do that now? Because my dog all this doggie stuff I didn't let it lick my face, I didn't eat off then same plates. I'd kiss her head a lot, but that hadn't been near her arse and she couldn't lick it

I see it in active. I'm sure they are sad their pet has died but it's not comparable to losing a child and the wording could actually be very triggering.

Notsoslim · 13/02/2024 13:24

I put “assistance” in quotes but to correct myself the Aldi couple did have a registered assistance dog to be fair.

I don’t know if there’s an official difference but I see a big difference between traditional guide dogs for visually impaired people and other dogs people deem to be giving them emotional assistance.

The former is always well behaved and calm, the latter is not and acts more like a pet dog. In America it’s a growing problem with people bringing dogs absolutely everywhere and claiming it’s an emotional assistance dog.

Then that is an issue for MN, not the people posting it.

And on another thread, this specific topic got very heated and nasty with lots of comments deleted.
Let's leave this one here and move on.

Also I don't think the death of a pet is so sad it gives someone a free pass to do or say whatever they want. If I spoke to someone in real life and they were feeling sad and I asked why and they said "my little girl just died" meaning their dog, I'd think that was totally weird and really unnecessary

Atethehalloweenchocs · 13/02/2024 13:28

I think you should have to prebook dogs and only in certain parts of the train.

This is a really good idea.

The cracks about people with dogs not being able to form relationships with adults and the sneery tone about people having them because they dont have children or their children have left home - ODFOD.

There is a community hub I go to a lot, and a lady goes who has 3 "therapy" dogs. 2 of them are always fighting with each other and cause a nuisance.

Glenthebattleostrich · 13/02/2024 13:30

My dog is my baby, I absolutely adore her and she is the most pampered princess, and yes she has a jumper and a coat. She loves nothing more than being with her people, she snuggles on the sofa, sleeps in our bed and on her birthday gets presents and cake (well a bone while we sing happy birthday and she looks slightly confused!). She adores ripping paper off presents (and Amazon packages) and is my bestest girl.

She is also very well trained, travels beautifully on public transport (better than the arseholes who don't understand what headphones are for), behaves well in dog friendly pubs and cafes (she's usually tired after a lovely sniffy walk) and is actually quite antisocial with people, likes to lie down with her treat and relax. Apart from our local where the owner has a gorgeous German Shepherd who adores her and they have a cuddle in front of the fire while the owner brings bits of chicken and cheddars for them to share. Or the cafe who have a rottie who brings her his toys and likes to lick her ears (oddly ahe adores this and switches sides so he does both).

She's a cockapoo who we keep short haired hense the coat / jumper for cold wet weather. She isn't allowed to sit in bloody highchairs, is very jealous that some dogs have buggies and she has to use her paws.

And yes, people are often intolerant arse holes, one dick head threatened to kick her if she went near him when she was walking beautifully to heel on her way to the off lead field we use. We've also had people tantrumming when we take her to the dog friendly beach because there are dogs on the dog friendly beach when they have 5 others they can use but apparently why should they and they wanted tp bring their crotch goblins who are scared of dogs to the 1 dog friendly beach (I wish I was kidding or exaggerating, the dad was most put put when a staffy owner told him where to go).

I think I must live somewhere unique as we have a great range of places to go. Some dog friendly, some not. Some child friendly, some not. Some even let both in!! Although also worth noting that dog people ask if woof can come in and accept if the answer is no, it's usually parents who kick off when told their kids can't come into the one pub near us which doesn't allow them.

Just leave it. You are trying to start a conversation that always gets really nasty in threads like this. It can be very triggering, and there is no need for it.

Can we go back to moaning about dogs in high chairs?
