Help me get rid of those cheeky mouse!

We normally see a little mouse over the winter but it’s fleeting and there’s no sign of him in the rooms and then he’s gone by spring.

We’ve got one this year who is BOLD. I feel like I’m sat in HIS living room. He runs backwards and forwards to the cupboard under the stairs and sometimes just sits in the hall looking at me.

this in itself doesn’t bother me but my god there is just mouse shit everyone. I pull the sofa out and it’s a poo party.

i got loads of those electronic deterrent plug ins which worked for a while but now he’s back.

please link me with your guaranteed to work mouse traps that are child friendly please?

You don’t have 1 mouse, you never have one mouse! I’d be calling in pest control their wee if very poisonous! Get rid of it!

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 12/02/2024 19:14

Do you know where he gets in? I had one in the bathroom and realised he was getting in through the gap round the pipes. He had been eating an old shaving stick in the cupboard. I chucked that out and stuffed wire wool in the gap (thank you MN!) and fingers crossed it has sorted it. Bear in mind it's food and shelter he's after, so make sure he hasn't got access to food.

GoingUpUpUp · 12/02/2024 19:15

Snap traps. As cute as they are they are a pest that poo and wee everywhere.

Also as a PP said, highly unlikely it’s only one!

We had a rat last summer and the pest control couldn’t find the entry point!

What food is best for a snap trap?

We were told chunky peanut butter for the snap trap

Greensleevevssnotnose · 12/02/2024 19:32

Peanut butter or reeces pieces if it's a posh mouse

Harrysmummy246 · 12/02/2024 19:35

Peanut butter. Sticky enough they can't snatch and run.

And yeah, you've not MICE not mouse

I've got mice at work in the greenhouse, they're eating my plants and leaving calling cards.

Icequeen01 · 12/02/2024 19:37

My cats are forever bringing in live mice. I cannot kill them as I refuse to kill anything so I use a humane trap from Amazon. I've caught every single mouse within a few hours and then take it back over to the fields. I always find a little piece of chocolate attracts them.

Mysa74 · 12/02/2024 19:38

We had a wood mouse that got in by the pipes under the sink, now filled with wire wool. We caught him (definitely him) in a clear catching trap baited with a slice of cucumber with peanut butter on. We bought next day delivery from Amazon and after my daughter's had identified him we released him the next morning at our local stables. We put the trap back for several weeks but we haven't had another.

Hoglet70 · 12/02/2024 19:38

Please get a humane trap.
They like chocolate.

Stinkycarrot · 12/02/2024 19:44

Noo.. please get a humane trap off Amazon. They really work. I caught one once and it was the cutest thing. I released it about a mile up the road

MysticFelineScream · 12/02/2024 19:57

We bought some of these humane traps from Amazon and put some snickers in it. Catches the mice my cat brings in every time and really quickly!

Yes I have that trap too. Never lets me down!

RelativePitch · 13/02/2024 03:17

Same as PPs. Humane mouse trap from Amazon to catch the mice our cat brings in and loses. Peanut butter in the trap and they are caught within hours.

HirplesWithHaggis · 13/02/2024 03:34

The problem with "humane" traps is where do you release the mouse? Too close to your house they'll be back inside before you are. Too far away and they have no idea of where they are safe, and are extremely vulnerable to predators. Has anyone else seen the footage of a "humanely" captured rodent released by some dippy hippy in the middle of a field, only to be eaten by a bird just before reaching the long grass? It may salve your conscience, but it's not actually humane.

Snap traps are quick and clean. They're also quite cheap, so if the idea of disposing of the dead rodent and resetting the trap is too much for you, you can chuck the lot in the bin. And you never have only one mouse.

I totally disagree. I would much rather return a mouse into the under growth where it can take its chances as it would naturally than just kill the poor thing. I've never had a mouse beat me home yet!

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 13/02/2024 10:54

I agree - humane trap. These aren't vicious predators that you need to eliminate, they are important in the food chain for our wildlife. If you're going to catch them they should be put outside.

NewOrder · 22/02/2024 11:00

Well the humane traps have been in since post, flush against the walls on areas i know they frequent.

Has it worked? No.

Yesterday he actually ventured to about a foot away from me, looking me dead in the eye.

They are utter cocky bastards.

We got so annoyed with our visitors we installed an Anti-Vermin Exterminator Device.

As pp, get a cat. Mice are deterred by their smell! I have issues with the cat bringing them in as gifts and loosing them. So I also use snap traps when they refuse to be caught. Nutella is very successful. I do physically catch a lot actually, I just grab them with my hands and chuck them in the garden. The ones that get snapped are chucked over the field gate and the Red Kite or Mr Foxy comes to consume.

I honestly reckon i could grab the one in the living room, do they bite?

Not often, but I have been bitten. That one got launched out the back door, bastard. Hurt like hell. It was kind of my fault because I grabbed him by the tail, and he curled up and bit me hard. I now generally grab rubber gloves......just for a bit of added protection, grab from above, whole mouse, turn them on their backs, and they relax. I have caught A LOT over the years.

Darkenergy · 22/02/2024 12:52

You can have one mouse! I had one for a couple of weeks, cocky thing even went upstairs into my bedroom at one point! Caught it and that was the end of it. I think it can take a while for them to bring their mates in.

I used snap traps with peanut butter. I'm not convinced humane traps work or are even that humane tbh.
