Or I suppose you had forgotten?
Or what were you surprised other people did not know?

The accident on the M4? We watched the reconstruction and it was horrible

Yes! God a reconstrution would've been much worse.

@cakeorwine By the fact people over take in the outside lane, they are going faster than those in the inside lane - hence referring to them as the fast and slow lane. I’m kind of fascinated by your responses to my description of something that happened 11 years ago and was just a passing comment made on mn on a Sunday night.

Serrates · 11/02/2024 19:44

My speedo broke whilst driving. I phoned the garage and they said come straight down - so I did, and accidentally drove at 33mph. The course instructor told me I should have called a tow truck! For a perfectly drivable car with a broken speedo! I mean really, it’s not realistic to spend hundreds of pounds having a car towed when it’s perfectly functional. I would probably have had to get a taxi home and leave my car by the side of the road for the tow truck to collect, and have no car for days or even weeks. Just an insane suggestion, it was a five minute fix at the garage.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 11/02/2024 19:45

@cakeorwine I find that terminology confusing!

Is the inside lane the one on the left on a dual carriageway/ motorway? Because it’s actually on the outside of the road which is why I get confused.

And the outside lane for overtaking in, is actually in the middle of the road? It makes no sense to me!! I go for lane 1 or 2 when teaching ds to avoid confusion!!

You clearly haven't got it.

Fair enough.

That if the driver behind you is ‘up your bum’ you should slow down not speed up, to increase the distance between you and the car in front. If you speed up you’ll just end up with a small gap in front and behind.

I do this anyway, just to piss them off. Nothing worse than some dickhead driver riding off your petrol fumes.

TeenLifeMum · 11/02/2024 19:48

@cakeorwine we’ll probably have to agree we clearly think each other are thick.

SwordToFlamethrower · 11/02/2024 19:48

Check my blind spot!

flashmcdoodle · 11/02/2024 19:48

I learned that speed cameras are only installed on roads that have had a certain amount of fatalities. I think raising awareness about this might make people view speed cameras differently

Inside lane - would be the one you are "usually" driving on - so the left hand side.

Outside lane - on the right hand side. of the carriageway.
You can also have middle lane - as in middle lane hoggers.

Of course, with 4 lane motorways, name lanes can get more confusing.

I was taught to try and stay on the inside lane and use the other lanes for overtaking, whilst then trying to get back into the inside lane. With the increased traffic, especially lorries, that can get interesting, especially if you are trying to maintain a safe distance to the vehicle in front.

Not much. Did it online and everyone was super nice and no annoying debates etc.

There was some about different speed limits in Wales which I doubt I will retain and hope these will be well signposted if I ever go to Wales.

Sorry to tell you they are absolutely NOT signposted well 😆
My street is apparently a different speed limit depending on which side road you access it from

Reugny · 11/02/2024 19:52

TeenLifeMum · 11/02/2024 19:10

Are you asking about my first, second or third one? 😂🤷🏻‍♀️
Common sense. I was speeding for the following reasons:

  1. Sunday morning on A303 with 3 other cars all in the slow lane but all going a steady 80 in good weather conditions (police car behind the bridge)
  2. driving between 2 villages I thought the speed limit was 40, turns out it was 30 but no signs just lamp posts that I didn’t clock between the trees.
  3. Driving at 33mph late at night on a main road

This is over 25 years… dh has never had a speeding fine which, considering his previous long commute has shown me I’m very unlucky and shouldn’t take risks.

There is no such thing as the slow lane.

You drive in the leftmost lane you can drive in without zigzagging.

ThePoshUns · 11/02/2024 19:53

That Americans can partake. Apart from that nothing I didn't know already apart from how little others do.

ExMIL learned that she couldn't even see the board from the front row (having missed the venue twice and taken 30 minutes to find the room) and she should probably call her consultant and get her cataracts done before her summer holiday instead of delaying them until after Christmas.

Still fucking drove home, though.

I'm sorry but this made me laugh 😆

WoahWannaDanceWithNoBody · 11/02/2024 19:54

On the motorway you stay as far left as you can, pay attention to the gantry, and don't drive in a lane with a red X on the gantry sign!

Wishiwasatailor · 11/02/2024 19:54

if there’s street lights it’s 30mph unless otherwise stated

Was caught at 36 in a 30, was on a course near Crowthorne,Berks. The instructor gave us a blow by blow account of a pile up on a motorway.

A man had run down the hard shoulder waving to slow everyone down, but they all ignored him.

Then the awful bit about a family being trapped as their car was on fire but nobody could get them out, and how the dad inside was trying to kick the window out.

It was harrowing but I'm now the slowest driver in East Anglia.

I did the crowthorne course too. That was a horric story.

I learnt to drop a gear to keep speed down.

easilydistracted1 · 11/02/2024 19:55

I thought I knew the rules around different road speeds but I didn't. They gave us tips of when to look out for speed change signs. Also I really didn't realise what a difference a couple of miles made on stopping distance and how little time it made up. There was a demonstration of this that was quite sobering. Plus loads of little tips for not drifting. My wife did the same course shortly after and said it was obvious, dull and she learned nothing at all. So I guess you might get out what you put in!

Reugny · 11/02/2024 19:56

PaintBySticker · 11/02/2024 19:38

That if the driver behind you is ‘up your bum’ you should slow down not speed up, to increase the distance between you and the car in front. If you speed up you’ll just end up with a small gap in front and behind.

If safe to do so you let them overtake you.

Happens frequently in 20mph zones where people think they can do 30mph.

On the other hand it is clear people don't read speed signs as some people insist on doing 20mph on roads with 30mph signs just because the side streets are 20mph.

Why unlucky? You were speeding. Nothing to do with luck.

"Steady 80"? Come on. I'm with @cakeorwine here, you're in the wrong and you know it.

TeenLifeMum · 11/02/2024 19:57

@WoahWannaDanceWithNoBody i am aware that technically there isn’t a fast/slow lane but there are two lanes and one is used for over taking so by the nature of over taking meaning you go faster than the cars in the inside lane it will be the lane where traffic moves faster (except for traffic jams). I literally used it to describe a situation and it’s clear from my description what I mean. I didn’t realise this was a Highway Code test 😂

Still missing the point there.

The speed limit in both lanes is exactly the same. The outside lane is the overtaking lane, neither is the fast lane.

This one got me - there is a road near Monks Cross in York. I was convinced it was NSL - and then saw a speed camera van. We don't have fixed cameras here - and the road had street lights.

Apparently they have to have the speed limit sign fixed to the street lights every ?metres if it's not 30 mph.

You can just see it on the street light.

What did you learn on a speed awareness course you didn't know before?
TeenLifeMum · 11/02/2024 19:59

@twobluechickens yep I was speeding and in the wrong. Never said I wasn’t. Unlucky compared to dh who drove far more for work never got caught yet I’m sure he sped on occasion.
