What did you learn on a speed awareness course you didn't know before?

Or I suppose you had forgotten?
Or what were you surprised other people did not know?

and he correctly pointed out that it makes no sense because the outside lane is the one right inside the motorway and the inside lane is the one on the edge

The word "correctly" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there.

A better term might be "left hand lane" - and hope people realise that it's the left hand lane they should normally be in.

The Highway Code - General rules, techniques and advice for all drivers and riders (103 to 158) - Guidance - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

Dual carriageways
A dual carriageway is a road which has a central reservation to separate the carriageways.

Rule 137
On a two-lane dual carriageway you should stay in the left-hand lane. Use the right-hand lane for overtaking or turning right. After overtaking, move back to the left-hand lane when it is safe to do so.

Rule 138

On a dual carriageway with three or more lanes, you may use the middle lanes or the right-hand lane to overtake but you should return to the middle lanes and then the left-hand lane when it is safe to do so.

The psychology and mindset of driving and terminology is fascinating.

I also find it interesting how some people can change their view in light of new evidence and some people just can't.

I think I can see why some people on here have had to attend speed awareness courses.

It's quite obvious isn't it. And I'm more inclined to keep harping on about it the more people complain about it.

SerendipityJane · 12/02/2024 09:41

We didn't have to 'admit guilt' in any verbal way, and certainly not by taking turns to do so. There was no shaming.

I didn't feel shamed - it wasn't a primary school detention (despite my cynicism). Just one of the ground rules of taking the course. Along with absolute privacy for all participants. The round the room was a general "How long have you been driving, do you drive for a living and what was your speed recorded on the summons". The last was interesting as it played straight into the very first learning of the day - that speed limits are coming down because it saves lives.

All of a sudden saving 7 minutes over a 1 hour drive by going 80 instead of 70 is only worth one childs life instead of 2

cakeorwine · 12/02/2024 09:42

So Cake, do you think anyone on here is going to charge their language from slow/middle/fast lane to inside/outside lane because of your postings? I certainly won't. Everyone knows what slow/middle/fast lane means, people can see it with their own eyes

And I suppose that is why we have people on speed awareness courses....

Why won't you change your language?

Would you use the word left hand lane, middle lane and right hand lane?

cakeorwine · 12/02/2024 09:43

And if your son doesn't know what the inside lane is when driving, then maybe he shouldn't be on the road?

I guess he knows what the Highway Code states about driving on multilane carriageways?

cakeorwine · 12/02/2024 09:46

If I am driving fast on a dual carriageway, what lane should I be in?

Strugglingtodomybest · 12/02/2024 11:09

cakeorwine · 11/02/2024 18:41

What do you mean by that?

There isn't a minimum speed limit as far as I aware?

I mean, I thought the limit was 60, but it's 70, so I had been driving too slowly and thinking that everyone else was speeding!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 12/02/2024 11:19

Have you been on a motorway recently?
With idiots doing 90 - 100 mph in the outside lane?

I bet they call it the fast lane.

I expect some of them do and some of them don't, just like the people who don't speed.

LadyRoughDiamond · 12/02/2024 11:27

Where to go for a really nice cream tea. We were taken out in small groups with an instructor. He watched two of us drive for about 10 minutes then suggested tea and scones at a local cafe. It was lush!

How speeding when you’re late makes very little difference to arrival time

How silly, of course driving faster means you get there earlier, just as driving slower means you get there later - is this what you were told on your course? That your driving speed somehow affects time itself?

It's true. There's a Top Gear episode where they tested it, and the difference in arrival times was minimal and certainly not worth speeding for.

Ilovemyshed · 11/02/2024 19:01

Basic highway code. Does no-one read it anymore?

I haven't read it since I took my test. Do you read it more often? I guess it might be worth having a read of it every year or so.

Crossroadslife · 12/02/2024 12:21

DG1749 · 11/02/2024 18:27

Has the speed limit changed since I learned to drive 30+ years ago? When helping my daughter revise for her therapy test I was surprised to find it's now 70 in some places, not 60 as I was taught in lessons. Back then, I'm sure 70 was only motorways and 60 / 30 was the national speed limit elsewhere?

I’m glad this wasn’t just me. I was adamant that 70 is only for motorways and that 60 applies on dual carriageways but apparently not!

PermanentTemporary · 12/02/2024 12:23

Thank you for responding about the 10% thing.

I remember now that we were specifically told on our course not to rely on that!

SerendipityJane · 12/02/2024 12:51

I haven't read it since I took my test

Bet you'd have something to say if you went to a GP and they pulled out a 1969 reference book.

@Towerofsong You can actually sign up to updates online to the Highway Code, so they email you if anything changes. It's really useful.

That's really helpful to know, I'm off to find it now...

Actually, this was the other main thing I learned - that the Highway Code is updated fairly regularly. I suppose it’s obvious when you think about it, however I hadn’t looked at it once since I passed by test in the 1980s!

I was left wondering if were all supposed to wade through it every so often to see if we can spot the updates, or if there is something you can sign up to that will email when changes are made. I remain none the wiser.

it was enlightening how many people on mine didn't know the NSL on different types of roads

Or that many van drivers dont know they can only do 60 on a dual carriage way

Is that just van drivers?
A dual carriageway is 70 no?
God maybe I need a speed awareness course.

I refer you to my suggestion they should be mandatory every 10 years.

I agree, it would hopefully improve driving standards.

Where I live, we've had a spate of people cutting down speed cameras. I wonder if they'd still be doing that if they knew how many lives they save?

SerendipityJane · 12/02/2024 13:30

I agree, it would hopefully improve driving standards.

Judging by the "how can I pay less for my car insurance ?" thread elsewhere, that's of little interest to most folk, then.

I also learned (from one of the instructors) a new version of

I’ve never been on a course but this thread is interesting. I’m not surprised so many of you thought a dual carriageway was 60mph for cars rather than 70mph. I always love driving on them at 70, overtaking seemingly everyone else inexplicably doing 60 :)

Just because it's 70 does not mean you need to 70.

It's amazing the MPG difference you get when you don't go at 70 and it's not a massive difference in the time it takes to get there.

I know. People are fucking nobheads on here sometimes. Those lanes are colloquially known as the slow lane, middle lanes and fast lanes. Nothing to do with speeding at all. I call them that and I don't speed! Calling it a fast lane doesn't mean people will use it to speed. Everyone knows that there's a speed limit. We've all done a driving test. Just some people choose to ignore it, and some people make mistakes and speed. It's nothing to do with what people call the lanes!!

Completely agree with this.
MN has even created a Pedant's corner for these people to hang out in but they still sneak out to derail other threads.

It's Pedants' Corner, because it is the corner belonging to all pedants, not just to one pedant.
