At work, local gov environment - we sat nattering on our desks and a colleague walked in from a client visit and wished one of my work-mates, "Congrats on your engagement

That was fine until my co-worker stuck out her hand to show of her diamond ring set in white gold I think it was.

The workmate who walked in said, "is that real." Honestly, she was being serious and had not noted what she had done by her insensitive comments

Have you got something to share that was insensitive?

Someone I went to school with saying I looked like Gail Platt from Corrie - when I was TWELVE 😂 I’ll admit the hairdresser did a number on me beforehand.

A friend who told me a man who offered to buy me a drink was just joking. She’s a Life Coach now which is laughable.

One of the nastiest girls I ever met, think Mean Girls, is now into reiki, “worship the feminine” bullshit. Felt like calling her out but blocked her instead.

I was working in a hospital in London years ago. My manager was Cruella De Vil and Miranda Priestly all wrapped up into one. I had problematic facial hair due to polycystic ovaries. I was having a course of laser treatment. She left veet hair removal coupons on my desk cut from a magazine. She wanted to know if I had met my husband before or after the weight gain because she thought it 'unfathomable' that any man could want a woman so 'heavy footed'. She complained that she could hear me stomping down the corridor, long before I arrived. I was just amused as I wasn't overweight, and could see through her act. She asked to borrow cash for lunch from me a few times, and I refused. She would say she was just trying to do me a favour by leaving less temptation to spend on food in my way. There was a clerk with low self esteem in the department. Cruella would comment that she could never hope to get a man with a face like that. She had acne and some other skin issues. She made the poor girl cry. To top it off, she left a London newspaper on her desk open on the personal ads pages (this was pre-OLD era). She made loud comments that unattractive people should try to find someone there, as no one would want them but the desperate. I walked out of that job, and never looked back. I heard another worker did too. It was pretty clear this woman was not just a bully, but riddled with her own insecurity and unhappiness to prey on others in the way she did.

Andy said to me that you are actually very attractive , I don't see it myself

Said to me 20 years ago by my friend!

We have lost contact she dod have a bitchy side, but was one of those who said she was just being honest .

Sidehustlequestion · 12/02/2024 00:08

I remember going round to an exes family home for Sunday dinner for the first time and his sister was absolutely awful. She looked me up and down and said ‘oh do you like leopard print? I find it really tacky’ as I sat there with my leopard print ballet pumps on 😂 she was a witch.

I still love a bit of leopard print, tacky or not!

Many years ago, my sisters MIL

I hadn’t seen her for ages, and to be fair I had put on a lot of weight. She didn’t recognise me, I had to explain who I was. With a shocked look on her face she said “You used to be thin, what happened?!”

I had a similar thing happen when someone who hadn’t seen me for a while said “you used to be really beautiful”. I should have said “and you used to be lovely. Now you’re a bitch. What happened?”

I had a frienemy just like this!! She would say, my boyfriend calls you ‘the ugly one’ 😂 funnily enough, no longer friends! It appeared everyone around me knew she wasn’t a real friend but it took me longer to realise.

So many of these look like innocent comments to me !

is that because making bitchy comments are the norm in your world?

Ramalangadingdong · 12/02/2024 00:14

Dacadactyl · 11/02/2024 18:30

I know. Its frightening how many people get offended at absolutely nothing, or who twist things to think people are having a dig at them!!

There are about 5 comments on this whole thread that were actively nasty (the racism one is just beyond awful) but other than those, I don't see bitchiness in many!

I suppose it depends on tone and context. Odd posters say comments were intentionally bitchy I believe them.

HollyKnight · 12/02/2024 00:15

I used to have really bad psoriasis on my face. After starting a new job, one colleague looked at me shocked and said "What happened?" That was a bit hmm to start with, but after I told her it is psoriasis she said "Oh I wasn't sure if it was a burn or a birthmark. You're so brave. I'd kill myself if my face looked like that!" What the fuck is wrong with some people.

Somepeoplearesnippy · 12/02/2024 00:16

My mum and her sisters were the absolute queen bees of passive-aggressive bitchiness. Their whole lives were like a Hinge and Brackett (very old reference) sketch. They were just so nasty it stopped being hurtful and became funny.

My favourite comment ever was about 30 years ago, just after my Dad died. One of my mums sisters visited me the day before his funeral. We were expecting about 80 people and I was doing the catering despite working full time and being 4 months pregnant. It wasn't ideal but mum wasn't up to it and it was an act of service for my Dad.

My aunt sat in the kitchen for a couple of hours and watched me work. I made lovely things. I'm a good cook. Nearly everything was homemade from scratch. Coronation chicken, 2 sorts of bread, different pates etc but the only comment she made was a sharp intake of breath followed by "ooh - shop bought sausage rolls - that's brave!'

RestingMurderousFace · 12/02/2024 00:20

A woman once informed me that I looked like I could be one of Rod Stewart’s girlfriends. I decided to take it as a compliment, much to her annoyance. 😆

MermaidMummy06 · 12/02/2024 00:20

I've a friend who is from another country - the land of milk & honey if you believe her. Over ten years I've listened to her say bitchy comments about this country (which has looked after her extremely well) and the people are rude, etc.

My last straw was recently having coffee. She's split from her husband and is taking the kids back to her home country. Apart from the constant comments on how much better her country is, she says 'I'll wait until I get home to date again. A much better crop of men than this country can offer'.

Considering how my husband, and her other friend's husband, have gone out of their way to help her, it's pretty bloody rude.

I finally told her, quietly, it was rude. She's scurried off & I don't hear from her now. Apparently her country people don't always apologise as she insists.

Blackhairblackheart · 12/02/2024 00:22

MIL... talking about DP and i getting married and she sneered at me and said 'oh i couldnt imagine you in a white dress..'
I fired back, without even thinking, 'oh its okay, i wanted a black one anyway!'
Wiped the smug look right off her face and now i have to find a black wedding dress🤣

IHateLegDay · 12/02/2024 00:28

About 15 years ago (when my sister was an absolute bitch - she's got better with age) I had put on a bit of weight but it was a hot day so was wearing a skirt.
She walked past me and said "your legs are like tree trunks. Cover them because you're making me feel sick."
I haven't worn a skirt since.

BlastedPimples · 12/02/2024 00:28

"I couldn't possibly drive a Ford."

BlastedPimples · 12/02/2024 00:30

@IHateLegDay you need to be a bit more, "Fuck you and fuck off." to your sister.

And show your legs. Say, "So vomit then bitch," next time she comments.

SomethingUniqueThisTime · 12/02/2024 00:36

I very rarely have the quick-wittedness to come up with a reply when faced with a rude comment. In the shop where I worked we had a regular customer who we knew was shoplifting so I would chat to him and watch like a hawk to prevent any theft. He knew what I was doing and snidely said ‘has anyone told you how much you look like Matt Lucas’. I was very overweight at the time and really hurt, but quick as I flash I replied ‘it’s funny you should say that as he’s actually my brother’!
He believed me and he came back later to point me out to a friend, he was obviously starstruck about the woman managing a shop in a small market town being Matt Lucas’ long lost sister. And now 7st lighter I certainly look nothing like him.

It was clearly intended as compliment

CottonCandyLand · 12/02/2024 00:37

In my 20s I was in a pub with a male friend. Two women next to us were pretty drunk but recognised the guy I was with.
Woman 1 was looking at us and said to woman 2 “is that his wife.” Woman 2 looked at me, turned back to woman 1 and said “Nah, his wife is much prettier than that”

FFS 😁

NotAgainWilson · 12/02/2024 00:46

Someone in Mumsnet saying I wouldn’t be a single mum if I had kept my legs crossed.

Or being told my life is what it is because I didn’t choose well.

I had been married for 5 years and spent two in fertility treatment to bring DS to the world. His dad was a great partner in every way before DS was born, but he was not a great dad, which obviously I had no way to know before we had our very own child living at home 24/7.

I think MIL tops it. After miscarriages at: 17 and 12 weeks and losing a little boy at 27 weeks (we had one three and a half year old). "Such a shame you can't perform".

It was 27 years ago. I have yet to forgive her.

It really wasn’t. Since I was the one who was actually there, you’ll have to take my word for it. Or don’t.

Edited

But his girlfriends have always been very pretty, leggy blondes that’s well known. How is that not a compliment? Or was it sarcasm?
