What do you think of when you hear the name Ralph? Was chatting with my partner today and i said that women of around my age (50) would probably answer with the name of a book. Just wondered if i was right!

Yep, I thought Forever as soon as I saw the thread title.

I re-read it on Kindle recently btw. It totally stands up (fnar!) but it's really funny the different perspective you get of the relationships as an adult.

louderthan · 10/02/2024 22:42

Lord of the Flies and Forever equally

Duh · 10/02/2024 22:44

Forever! I am 41 and aged 11 I stole my elder sister’s book.

A few years ago she named her new dog Ralph and I couldn’t stop laughing. She was totally confused as to what I found so funny then it dawned on her. Seeing the dots connecting in her head was wonderful! He’s a lovely dog to be fair 😊

Starboy14 · 10/02/2024 22:45

I think of Ralph Macchio from the Karate Kid!

RaininSummer · 10/02/2024 22:45

No idea of the book. I think of Ralph Fiennes first.

twoforj0y · 10/02/2024 22:45

FOREVER!

I'm 49 Smile

RomainesToBeSeen · 10/02/2024 22:48

Yes, definitely 'Forever' by Judy Blume.

I can't remember much of the story/detail but there was a bit about having sex on a multicoloured rug that for some reason has always stuck with me.

VivaDixie · 10/02/2024 22:51

Another one who saw the title and clicked for some juicy Judy Blume chat about naming a penis 🤣

Age 51 🙋🏼‍♀️

JustNormalMen · 10/02/2024 22:55

yup, Judy Blume (45). Alice Bentham in my class had a copy with the relevant page numbers for all the saucy bits pencilled inside the front cover, so no one I know actually read more than about half a dozen paragraphs of it.

Tigandgab · 11/02/2024 05:28

So glad it's not just me. Though of course Ralph from Lord of the flies comes a v close second, just not the same impact on a teenage mind! We also passed a battered copy of Forever around at school. I think Tiger Eyes might have been my favourite Judy Blume though, might have to give some of them a re-read now.

Forever. I’m 48

SinnerBoy · 11/02/2024 06:52

My daughter is in middle school and there are at least two Ralph's. Here in the Northeast of England, it's pronounced Rarf.

The one who went up with her from first school goes by Rah.

ChaoticCrumble · 10/02/2024 22:03

Forever!!

This!!

implantsandaDyson · 11/02/2024 07:58

Ralph always makes me think of Judy Blume, I'm 49! I watched "Are you there God, its me Margaret" with my youngest daughter earlier in the year and kept giggling thinking of swapping Forever in school. That and reading the dirty bits in the Thorn Birds and Lace filled many a sneaky minute in school.

WoahWannaDanceWithNoBody · 11/02/2024 08:04

I think of Ralph Fiennes in his English Patient era.

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 11/02/2024 08:06

Ralph Wiggum from the Simpsons.

Sgtmajormummy · 11/02/2024 08:22

My dog is a Ralph too! The breeders use actors’ names so we were able to chose Ralph Fiennes. So he’s Raif on a Sunday…

I’ve been asked if he’s named after
Wreck-it Ralph (kids)
The big grey puppet (that’s Alf!)
Happy Days
Karate Kid

Nobody has made the connection with LOTF or “Raif” Richardson. Or AFAIK with your book OP.

Definitely Forever (I also read it again recently and I thought Kathryn was a right bitch!).

Sgtmajormummy · 11/02/2024 08:26

Can we not edit out irrelevant photos? Sorry about that.

Datdamndamp · 11/02/2024 08:32

Forever (50). My dad found the book, was shocked then read out some of the rude bits (angrily) to my mum while my sister and I were in the room.

I am still mortified.

Fifthtimelucky · 11/02/2024 09:52

It depends on the pronunciation.

My earliest association with the name is that is the name of a boy I was at school with (pronounced Ralf). Probably for that reason I think of the Ralph in Lord of the Flies being pronounced the same way.

When pronounced Rafe, I think of Vaughan Williams and Fiennes.

VivienneDelacroix · 11/02/2024 22:38

Yes! Forever! I'm 46.

I took.it to read on a really dull afternoon at my parents' friends' house. I had a secondhand copy and of course it fell open at Ralph's page when my dad's friend picked it up to look at what I was reading. The adults then passed it around the room reading all about Ralph whilst I died in the corner.

Wishiwasalittlebitsmaller · 11/02/2024 22:44

I have never heard of this before! My son is called Ralph 😵‍💫

Nubbled · 11/02/2024 22:47

Spewing, and I’m 57
