Where in Cornwall would you recommend to go on holiday?

We have three small children (3 1/2 years, 2 years and 6 weeks old).

We're planning to go to Cornwall for a week at the end of June.

We're not originally from the UK, so don't know that much about beautiful destinations.

Is there anywhere in Cornwall you would recommend for a family with small children?

Thanks xx

Do you want a self catering apartment, tent camping, high end hotel or a static caravan? Will you be travelling in your own car?

Would be useful to indicate budget / needs to narrow it down.

There are some lovely holiday camps around the county.

We will be travelling in our own car and would most likely rent an airbnb.

Budget maybe up to 1000 pounds?

Obviously better if less, but I know that Cornwall is expensive

OK, so with tiny tots I'd avoid St Ives - parking is atrocious, lots of hills, rental houses often open onto the road without much of a pavement and it's so busy in summer it's like Tetris.

Marazion is beautiful but similar parking problems. Not a lot happening there, but I can definitely recommend the Wheal Rodney lodges for inexpensive accommodation. Lovely indoor swimming pool onsite too. Close to Penzance for supermarkets etc.

North coast would have more for kids day to day at the various holiday park sites around Newquay. Also easier for beaches. Plenty of rental apartments or houses in this area.

Hayle has a huge beach and is good for access to the west of Cornwall for more beaches, the Minack Theatre etc.

Falmouth has more happening day to day and is a popular tourist destination.

Falmouth
Marazion
Mevagissey

We stay at Perran sands every year in perranporth (but go somewhere different every day)

Andthereyougo · 09/02/2024 18:16

Another vote for Perranporth, the beach is stunning. The Perran Sands Haven site was clean, tidy, and seemed fairly quiet when I stayed there 2019. I didn’t use any of the pools or facilities though but lots for kids and an easy drive to NT properties and Eden project.

I wouldn't go to Cornwall. I would go to South Devon. The Salcombe area has sandy beaches and because its an estuary the water is calmer than seaward facing towns.

FanSpamTastic · 09/02/2024 18:28

Mawgan Porth is lovely - big sandy beach.

cerisepanther73 · 09/02/2024 18:31

St Ives and Falmouth

St Ives cause of the charming acctractive olde worlde quaint Town

the sea in Cornwall is lovely

Really enjoyed my break

paulhollywoodshairgel · 09/02/2024 18:43

Bude is gorgeous. Amazing beaches and close to Tintagel and Boscastle. About 30 mins from Newquay and not far from Eden project.

bear1923 · 09/02/2024 20:13

babbacombe is beautiful, lovely beaches and walks.

QueenMabby · 09/02/2024 20:44

My dc are much older now but when they were little we stayed here:

It was great. Play barn, collecting eggs from the chickens and a pool. Also not too far from the beach.

DoggerelBank · 09/02/2024 20:47

Another vote for Bude. Love it! Especially Northcott Mouth beach, which has rocky outcrops that shelter you from the wind.

PlantDoctor · 09/02/2024 20:49

I live in Cornwall. Newquay is scummy and I wouldn't take a family of young children there. Perranporth is lovely if you just fancy a simple beach style holiday.

Acatdance · 09/02/2024 20:52

I'd steer clear of Newquay and surrounding areas because it's surfer-dude central in summer; great for party-loving adults but not so much for small children.

Pentewan Sands is lovely in the mid-Cornwall area and very family-friendly.

Pushkinini · 09/02/2024 21:11

I also live in Cornwall and agree, Newquay is pretty gross. I'm in the Seven Bays area near Padstow and the beaches here are fantastic. Mother Iveys, Higher Harlyn and Atlantic Bays are nice sites and close to the beach.

OrlandointheWilderness · 09/02/2024 21:19

We love Padstow and surrounding area

Macramepotholder · 09/02/2024 21:36

Anywhere on the Roseland Peninsula- Mevagissey, St Mawes, Portscatho. Much quieter, lovely, cuts out almost an hour of extra driving and the south coast beaches are much gentler and safer for little kids (rips, currents, not as windy). You're also near the Lost Gardens of Heligan which is a brilliant day out (awesome playground). June shouldn't be rammed anyway.

Pericombobulations · 09/02/2024 21:36

Another vote for Padstow and the 7 bays. The beaches are fabulous and there are other interesting things to do in the area if its not beach weather.

confusedlots · 09/02/2024 21:45

I'd base yourself in Falmouth. Lots to do in Falmouth including the maritime museum, boat trips etc. Do a day trip to the Eden project. There are some lovely national trust sites nearby and could also do a day trip to St Ives. Lots of lovely places to stop off on way there or way home

PlantDoctor · 09/02/2024 21:47

I do love Padstow but if you're coming in the summer it is VERY busy these days. You have to be in the town before 8:30 if you want a chance of parking!

Pentewan sands above is a good shout too. It's just down the road from the lost gardens of heligan, which is great for kids and adults! (MASSIVE play field with loads of new equipment for kids). You're also not far from the Eden Project.

MegBusset · 09/02/2024 21:48

Pentewan Sands is perfect for this age. Has its own beach, pool, restaurant (but not rowdy). Near to lots of stuff: recommend Landydrock / Trerice National Trust , and Heartlands heritage centre, Poldhu Cove.

CoralExpert · 09/02/2024 21:49

South Cornwall is my favourite holiday destination. Penzance area is lovely and you are in the middle of everything. Flambards Theme Park in Helston, Geevor Tin mine in Pendeen and Pendeen lighthouse. Minack Theatre over in PorthCurno and the Telegraph museum is a must and great fun for children. PorthCurno beach is stunning and around May time you can see basking sharks in the bay.

lizzie0712 · 09/02/2024 21:52

Another vote for Bude. We have been going there for years with children and now grandchildren. Beautiful beaches, loads to do locally, lovely town to potter around. Perfect.

AIstolemylunch · 09/02/2024 21:53

We usually go to Falmouth or near Padstow. I love Cornwall but would hesitate to go in the summer with really little ones though you should be OK in June before the school holidays.

Can I also suggest Pembrokshire in Wales which has a similar vibe, beautiful beaches but maybe slightly better for smaller children (St David's, Solva, Tenby)
