Where are you all buying them?
I can't afford £300 for a prom dress from one of the prom dress shops near us. Are there any that are of any decent quality online? Dd wants a light blue satin dress

Have a look at JJ House. They come long do you have to alter. My dd ended up with one from Boohoo, but she wanted none traditional prom. Next Lipsy have some really nice options too - although I would have made my dd wears a vest panel under some of the styles! 😉

Both of our girls managed to get lovely prom dresses from TK Maxx, I'm sure both were under £100. There were a few years between their proms so this wasn't a one off, TK Maxx must sell them regularly.

You don't need to spend hundreds to get a nice prom dress.

TK MAXX
Coast - try going through Debenhams
House of Fraser
Reiss (sale)

My DD wearing a jumpsuit from Nobody's Child and it's stunning on her.

JD Williams have some lovely dresses and you can pay them off.

There's another more traditional 'prom' dress site - I'll come back to you with that when I remember it!

Shein and you can return if no good, you do have to pay at the same time you order, but they’re very quick with refunds, I've recently ordered 12 dresses for a wedding 🤣🤣

norma1980 · 10/02/2024 18:30

Facebook marketplace is good too. Girls buying dresses hundreds of pounds to wear for a few hours and then trying to sell them on for less. Worth a look

Rjh76 · 10/02/2024 18:33

Hi, try Pre-loved wedding and occasion outfits Facebook page. Non-profit making group ran fantastically. 👍🏻

JoB1977 · 10/02/2024 18:33

Oh Polly is kind of a step up from Shien - not big fussy prom dresses but was great for what mine wanted and not see through like you sometimes get with Shien etc

MimiGC · 10/02/2024 18:33

I got my daughter's for £15 from eBay, turquoise blue satin and it was stunning. Have never been more chuffed at a bargain.

mondaytosunday · 10/02/2024 18:38

Another vote for JJs. Huge variety. About £100. Lovely but we did have to have it taken up (£20).

WhyIOughtTo · 10/02/2024 18:39

ASOS.

I second this. My daughter was really taken with a dress from JJ House and couldn’t get it out of her head, so we ordered it. I was very sceptical about the quality but the returns policy and reviews seemed good.

I was very impressed when it arrived. We paid £120 including delivery and will pay a local seamstress to do the alterations.

Quiz clothing! £50. DD chose it herself. Very also have a selection of quiz on there website.

2girls76 · 10/02/2024 18:50

Stacees online. Loads to choose from and most around the £100 mark. Can also order made to measure for £16 extra. Dress was stunning and very well made, also fitted perfectly.

Gingeratheart · 10/02/2024 18:50

DD got hers from ChiChi London online. It cost £50 and looked better than those of her friends who had spent hundreds. She sold it two years later for £40!

Mumof1andacat · 10/02/2024 18:51

You local oxfam Bridal shop might have a prom section

Same we ordered from here as per DD suggestion

Then I panicked because of course MN said I'd never receive it that it would be crap

It wasn't it was absolutely beautiful on DD and she looked like a super star

The Prom dress shop we went to today had a sale rail of sample dresses. They had some beautiful dresses for about £100. I’m sure a lot of prom shops will have sale rails and they ask if you have a budget. You could always phone around and ask what they have?

kell4life · 10/02/2024 19:02

Vinted, or there are often charity shops that specialise in wedding / party dresses. Also Quiz Clothing do some nice stuff suitable for prom, they have stores too so can actually try on.
No way is it worth spending £300+ on a dress that's worn for a few hours and will likely get spills on it. Team up with a nice bag and shoes, hair and make up etc. My daughter looked like a million dollars last year and we didn't break the bank. Obviously you will get parents that go all out big for prom, but my daughter wasn't overly fussed.

LlynTegid · 10/02/2024 19:03

Please consider charity shops or vintage, as it will be a dress that is not worn very often. Low use clothing contributes towards climate change.

I'd prefer that proms didn't happen, but I doubt you could change your DDs mind.

StarTwirl · 10/02/2024 19:06

No matter what they say you won't be able to return a Stacees dress because it's in China

That's the only downside

My DD was a standard size 6 so we did measure her exactly but she's slim etc so anything will look good on her

I'd advise to do the measurements exactly as they tell you to

Get a dress with in built bra, corset boning and is satin as it's a forgiving decent fabric

I'd probably not use sites like this if you're an awkward shape or not normal slim teenage brandy Melville size 4 - 8 just in case as you buy without any kind of fitting

HavingAnOffDAy · 10/02/2024 19:44

I bought my daughter’s dress on Vinted. She had a particular style in mind & we were lucky that one popped up one night while I was having a speculative browse. She’d seen it online but it was sold out in her size so it must have been fate!

Cost £60 all in, instead of the £150+ it would have been new.

I was fortunate that she didn’t want the whole day out prom dress shopping thing so she was happy to be sorted with minimal fuss.

Prior to buying it I’d joined a few prom dress selling pages on Facebook. I’ve noticed a lot more coming up on local selling pages in the last few weeks too.

SipSipHooray · 10/02/2024 20:18

My parents rented mine from a store, it was 10 plus years back but I had the benefit of having a dress without trying to sell it on after and better for the planet too, maybe ask on a Facebook local page to you if anyone knows of a similar service?

motheronthedancefloor · 10/02/2024 20:19

DD got one from an online shop called windsor.

ThereIsATInWater · 10/02/2024 20:26

One DD was from a bridal shop, a bridesmaid dress.

Second DD, we trawled Fonthill Road in London, ordered one from Shein, she didn't like it.
Ended up ordering one from Amazon. £50!
Had to get it shortened.

Poppalina37 · 10/02/2024 20:28
