Anyone else's DC obsessed with these?! My DS 9 is.

Are they worth the hype?!

I'm just looking at them too, for a birthday gift for DD15.
They're blimmin' pricey! There are dupes on amazon, but I suspect that would go down even worse than not getting one at all.
Interested to hear thoughts on anyone who has one.

Animatedapple · 07/02/2024 21:27

I gave one to my 8 year old for Christmas last year and she has used it every day since and she loves it. For her birthday she got some new pods. It has been worth it for her but she really wanted it and it was also her main present so I didn’t mind spending that much.

bigredboat · 07/02/2024 21:29

My 9 year old has one, she had to do jobs around the house to earn the money for it but she does use it every day. The pods do seem last a long time, I think it's a bit gimmicky and wouldn't get one for myself but loads of kids at her school have them, I think they are just 'in' at the moment.

LostMySocks · 07/02/2024 21:29

Every child at DS primary school is obsessed. They discuss pod flavours and which colour they have.
Both had them as birthday presents as I refused to buy as they had water bottles already. They were ecstatic. DS1 was beside himself with jealousy when DS2 had his first.
The bottles themself are pretty sturdy but if the lid isn't put on properly they leak so keep outside school bags.
They were given extra pods so I've not bought any yet as they don't change them very often but I suspect will be expensive
On the plus side they drink plenty of water and if they forget to bring out of school go back and get them without a fuss so they don't get lost.

07whatever · 07/02/2024 21:31

Bought my son one for Christmas with 3 packs of pods.
Had one sip from it, won't use it again. Been in the cupboard since.

GettingStuffed · 07/02/2024 21:33

I wouldn't bother now, Stanley cups will be over from the States soon.

LilBus · 07/02/2024 21:38

I only heard about these the other day, they seem interesting my kids had never heard about them though so not something they’ve discussed at their school.

unlikelychump · 07/02/2024 21:38

Mine have gone off them quickly and we are drowning in pods. My ds likes it still and yes it does leak if you are not careful.

But I don't regret giving into peer pressure for once, we rarely do

mummymayhem18 · 07/02/2024 21:38

Stanley cups are already a thing here as well as the Air Up bottles. My daughter bought one and loves it and uses it a lot, I've bought her the larger size one for her birthday as she's joined the gym and a selection of pods for it.

Longwhiskers · 07/02/2024 21:39

My 9 yr old got one for Xmas and so did several of his friends. It’s a good sturdy bottle and he doesn’t seem to want to change the pods frequently and has even been swapping them with his friends.

Vanillaradio · 07/02/2024 21:46

Ds had one of these for Christmas. His class (y5) are obsessed- there is constant conversation about pod flavours, whether you need still or sparkling water for the flavour to taste better etc etc etc. He absolutely loves it and is definitely drinking a lot of water. Yes its a bit of a gimic and definitely pricey (we bought in the Black Friday sale which helped). Be very very careful how you do the lid or it will leak- if it leaks you have done it wrong but I find it very easy to do it wrong!! Pods seem to last a long time, we are only on the second one since Christmas (cassis is nicer than peach ice tea apparently!)

PickledMuffin · 07/02/2024 21:47

Stanley cups 👀 not heard of those!

RainbowZebraWarrior · 07/02/2024 21:49

They are shit and overpriced. I got one for DD about a year and a half ago cos she whined on for ages. She used it for about a month. Also the pods are also stupidly expensive and the concept is crap IMHO.

They already are., several of my colleagues have them.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/02/2024 22:12

They look like a bunch of toddlers with their sippy cups!

ConflictedCheetah · 07/02/2024 22:15

They banned these in DC's primary a while back. Kids were so obsessed and the peer pressure to have one was massive so school banned them. I can imagine parents who'd forked out for them weren't impressed

scrivette · 07/02/2024 22:22

I didn't want DS to have one as I thought they were expensive, but after talking to other parents I bought him one for Christmas and I have been impressed with it. He rarely drinks squash anymore as he is happy to have the Air Up Bottle at the dinner table and he drinks far more water than he used to.

lilacstone · 07/02/2024 22:30

This was the main thing that my DD wanted for Christmas so I reluctantly got one for her. She’s used it every day since and it has been worth every penny. She used to drink nothing at school but now she drinks the full bottle and refills it! Her has never leaked and it makes her very happy.

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 07/02/2024 22:31

Ours leaked if you didn't put the lid on perfectly, which is fiddly. so we gave up and now it's in the cupboard. Wouldn't bother if I were you.

ilovepixie · 07/02/2024 22:33

I would be concerned about Air up and how it actually works and the health detriments of them.

I could have written your post. My DD is the same. She now not only empties but refills hers at school. I think the whole thing is gimmicky and the pods in particular but if it stops her dehydration headaches I am happy!

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 07/02/2024 22:40

I've just been in the States. Saw a Mum an approximately 9yo DD having lunch in Starbucks. Child had her Stanley (branded), designer clothes, latest iPhone; ordered her mother around to get her sushi, pastry etc. Did not stop watching Tik Tok videos all through the lunch.

I am SO glad my grandkids aren't into this nonsense.

PickledMuffin · 07/02/2024 22:47

@ilovepixie how do they work? I know that it's a small rather than flavour so to speak, but now could that be harmful?

Ours have gone full of black mould inside the mouth but. Inside where the straw fits it is full of ridges and mould has appeared in both bottles.
