Fantastic video too.

I will die on this hill.

God no. I hate pop music at the best of times but this in particular is dire

LaChienneDesFromages · 07/02/2024 18:51

Take On Me is a brilliant pop song, whatever my teens say. I still have a Smash Hits poster of Morton stashed somewhere.

Bit surely Cindy Lauper singing Girls Just Wanna Have Fun is the final word in eighties pop brilliance? It’s not just the tune, it’s the sentiment. It captures a time.

Ooh, I’m driving to Geneva with there’s teens next week and now feel an autoroute Spotify pop Olympics looming.

Just putting Don't you want me baby by the Human League on the table for your consideration

No it’s Toxic by Britney Spears

fact

Craftycorvid · 07/02/2024 19:04

No. I think you’ll find that glory belongs to Abba’s ‘Dancing Queen’. Euphoric! ‘Take on Me’ is still great pop, though, and the video brings back nostalgic memories for me.

LlynTegid · 07/02/2024 19:05

Love the video, not so sure about the song. If you are looking for writers of the perfect pop song, Scouting for Girls or the Lightning Seeds respective lead singers come to mind.

Sidebeforeself · 07/02/2024 19:08

No no no…theres some good ones here but the best pop song is Oblivious by Aztec Camera

MissRheingold · 07/02/2024 19:10

This is a contender

MissRheingold · 07/02/2024 19:11

And this

trulyunruly01 · 07/02/2024 19:12

I give you...
Somewhere in my Heart, Aztec Camera.

wobblykneez · 07/02/2024 19:18

I've seen A-Ha in concert as an adult - Magne has aged very well!
Had a selfie with Morten, teenage wobblykneez giggled like a teenager all the way home.
Think Morten and Magne are now grandpa's!!

JaneJeffer · 07/02/2024 19:21

Nope

Peregrina · 07/02/2024 19:22

I have seen them in concert - I think it was four Farewell concerts.

Tangomango1 · 07/02/2024 19:29

I won't go into a long story 🤨 But after VERY turbulent teenage years, we had a family holiday & ended up singing this song in the car all together & I silently shed tears! It holds a special place in my heart that I cannot describe! I love it Smile

SongbirdGarden · 07/02/2024 19:29

Dull, drab and sounded dated when it first came out, his good looks were enough to make that drivel a hit.

wobblykneez · 07/02/2024 19:29

Peregrina · 07/02/2024 19:22

I have seen them in concert - I think it was four Farewell concerts.

Their wives wanted them to stop working from home and get out from under their feet 🤣

SplodgeOfCustard · 07/02/2024 20:28

I rather like Careless Whisper.

NashvilleQueen · 07/02/2024 20:31

Heard Love Resurrection by Alison Moyet the other day. That's a great 80s tune.

Alltheyearround · 07/02/2024 20:33

Love it.

Diamondshmiamond · 07/02/2024 20:56

Oh to have been the girl in the video!

flatmop · 07/02/2024 20:57

It's A Little Respect for me too. Closely followed by I Wanna Dance With Somebody.

SnakesAndArrows · 07/02/2024 20:59

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 07/02/2024 16:58

If you want something dark and moody - Vienna, by Ultravox. Always gives me the shivers.

OTOH, does anyone else sing the 'boom boom boom' to Katy Perry's 'Firework' in the voice of Baldrick's War Poem?

🤣🤣🤣

SnakesAndArrows · 07/02/2024 21:05

Agree with Big Area and A Little Respect.

Also:

Papa Don’t Preach by Madonna (which has the most brilliant pop intro)
Boys of Summer by Don Henley
Rush Hour by Jane Wiedlin

Also, most of Abba really.

LisbonKid · 07/02/2024 21:07

Diamondshmiamond · 07/02/2024 20:56

Oh to have been the girl in the video!

Her name was Bunty and did actually date him for awhile💖

Crikeyalmighty · 07/02/2024 21:16

@SnakesAndArrows yep- I agree with those too - Rush hour is a brilliant and not always that well known track - one of my favourites

Britney's, Toxic , Oops I did it again and Hit me Baby are also incredibly well crafted songs.

Someone mentioned the Kinks Waterloo sunset - amazing track as is Days
