Scenes in films that are so illogical it really grates.

Eat Pray Love.
The two women have just discussed eating, muffin-tops, body image, etc, and Julia Roberts says to enjoy the pizza and just buy bigger jeans.

So in the next scene they are buying jeans, but doing that stereotypical-joke thing of lying on the changing room floor trying to pull up the zip on too-tight jeans.
Why? - that totally defeats the object.

I guess the male writer/director thought it would be a fun scene, that is how he imagines women always shop for jeans.
It just makes no sense in the context of the film.

What scenes really annoy you?

Not a film, but This Is Us. I binged watched the lot quite recently. The entire opening premise about Randall finding his father - it made no sense whatsoever how that could have been achieved. I kept hoping it would be explained, but it never was. There was a vague reference at the start to Randall hiring a PI, but (as the series pans out and shows) at the time he hired the PI, he had absolutely zero information for the PI to use, so how on earth could the father have been found?

The whole premise of Titanic actually offends me; with the deaths of 1500 real people functioning as a backcloth to the tear jerking 'love story' of 2 fictitious ones. This wasn't like a WWll story with millions of anonymous casualties, there were lists of all the passengers and crew so anyone (like Rose & Jack) who wasn't on the list was not on the boat. I think that any tears should be shed for the real people who died.

An illogical part of that film was presenting Rose as an admirable character when she was anything but. The last scene in particular - when she chucks the diamond in the ocean, mischievous smile on her face - just made me think 'you stupid old bitch'.

What irritated me was the number of times Rose was on the verge of escaping and got back onto the sodding ship. It's not as if they were increasing the tension in any way, because we already knew from the outset that she had survived.

Anything with horses. Always whinneying and neighing (fake sounds added)! They are actually pretty quiet most of the time.

Historical stuff that appear to have been written by people with no interest in history whatsoever. If you don't want to portray the 18th century or 19th century, do modern rewrite (a la Clueless, Bride and Prejudice) and be done with it.

In my (very limited) experience, they fart a lot more than films would suggest. That can be pretty noisy (and noxious).

Every poker scene in film or tv has a player move which is just not allowed in the the rules of actual poker. Its even got a name called the Hollywood Bet.

wellhello24 · 07/02/2024 09:25

Any romcom where the they meet their love interest by chance in public ie dropped their book in the street and a handsome stranger happened to reach for it at the same time as them and their eyes meet and they freeze…🙄 Or they miss their flight and have to wait for the next one where a tall dark stranger leaning against the wall with a wry smile is there in the waiting room eyeing her up.
Weve been sold a lie!!! Just never ever happens it’s extremely hard to meet people randomly in public without looking like a desperate creep 😂

I was thinking this at Christmas.
Tiny Tim in 'A Christmas Carol' was from a family as poor as church mice, but had the poshest clipped little accent: 😂

I long for an adaptation of Oliver Twist where he actually sounds as if he has been brought up in a workhouse rather than having angelic looks and speaking RP…

Any medical drama where:

They are looking for kidney/ liver for transplantation and miraculously the donor organ is a match in the same hospital.

Quercus5 · 07/02/2024 09:33

Try Pieces of a Woman for a realistic labour scene. Vanessa Kirby is astonishing.

This reminds me of Good Will Hunting, where the posh English girlfriend - played by Minnie Driver - is called Skylar.

Skylar/Skyler is a name of English and Dutch origin, and was taken to the US by Dutch settlers but was already in the UK. So… what’s the problem?

VampireWeekday · 07/02/2024 09:34

Why did Dale Cooper not simply stop the talent show? Why did he let it go ahead?! It doesn't make any sense. 30 years and I'm still not over it.

SausageRoll5862 · 07/02/2024 09:36

American films, when the characters are in cars, vans, trucks, absolutely NOBODY knows what a seatbelt is! I very rarely see anyone wearing one!

When the vehicle they're in is being driven in an erratic way, chasing/being chased whatever, the people, in real life would have been torn apart being flung through the windscreen or battered from being knocked about but the characters are sat there quite calmly!

Medical scenes and some idiot is smoking/vaping INSIDE the hospital! What hospital/medical facility would allow someone to puff away on a cigar inside a ward/room?!

Leaving the house and not closing the bloody door behind them

This winds me up at the start of every Hey Duggee…

Any scene with a computer where someone guesses the password straight off, because it's their dog or something. (Who is that stupid?)

Any scene with a computer where most of the screen is taken up with a massive message saying something like "Copying files," or "Access denied."

You'd be shocked at how many people actually do this irl lol not just their dogs name but literally something like Password123

Moonlightdust · 07/02/2024 09:39

Something small but still annoying - drinking out of clearly empty cups/mugs! 😁

Theresplendentemmaforbes · 07/02/2024 09:41

I watched Ambulance last night. Eiza Gonzalez'character is a paramedic and has her hair tied up except for a huge piece of hair hanging across her eye. At one point she needs to do something where she really needs to concentrate and having her vision obscured is not a good idea but nope, looking hot and sexy is more important.

Also, I noticed this with watching The Lazarus Project but it happens a lot in films, there will be a SWAT team storming a building and the team will be in protective clothing with machine guns and helmets yet the main characters just wear a bullet proof vest, hold a hand gun and no helmet, surely that wouldn't happen irl.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 07/02/2024 09:42

London is Falling - which is clearly not filmed in London as the traffic lights and pedestrian crossings are wrong. Not to mention the fact that no one can speed through central London!

Skylar/Skyler is a name of English and Dutch origin, and was taken to the US by Dutch settlers but was already in the UK. So… what’s the problem?

The character was supposed to be a posh English type. Skylar doesn’t fit. Jemima, Araminta, Camilla would. Skylar seems like the kind of name and American writer would think is upper class British, but isn’t

moreshitandnofuckingredemption · 07/02/2024 09:43

Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning - runaway steam train, no-one can access the driving bit to stop it, but then also there's no-one there to stoke the fire. And yet it never slows down, it just .... keeps .... on ..... running away
For about half the film 🤔

CranfordScones · 07/02/2024 09:43

Anyone who actually sees a GP. Except fantasy and period dramas.

Latenightreader · 07/02/2024 09:43

The start of Night at the Museum 2. The diorama figures, previously on display at a famous (real) museum are being packed away by being thrown into a box of sawdust. Definitely not conservation grade, and really bad object handling! Yes the shot was good, but my friend had to pause the dvd so I could have a rant… So many films involving museums or archives really.

The film of Elizabeth was unexpectedly hilarious. At one point someone leaves the Galilee chapel in Durham cathedral (can’t remember where is
t is supposed to be), rides for a long while, and then delivers a message in the chapter house. There was a huge wave of laughter when I saw it in the cinema in Durham.

feelingalittlehorse · 07/02/2024 09:44

Any car chase scene set in London where they are travelling at more than 7mph.

Mind blowing.

TheCadoganArms · 07/02/2024 09:45

Anytime someone is running away from something or someone they will always trip up, always, even when there is nothing to trip on, they will still fall over.

All the films where the dog is meant to look ferocious and is barking and snarling - but doing so with happy body language, a loose waggy tail and relaxed face, clearly looking at a handler just off camera. Not scary at all - playful!

Also any storyline that hinges on a misunderstanding because the lead characters don't spend two minutes talking. Drives me mad that we have a whole film about angst that a short chat could have avoided.

Tbf that is 90% of MN dilemmas. If they’d just actually talk to their DH, MIL, whichever work colleague or friend they deem a CF/rude almost everything could likely be resolved happily in ten mins. Instead they start furious MN threads 😂

banivani · 07/02/2024 09:46

Great thread! One of mine is accents, which PP:s have mentioned. People speaking "fluent Russian" when any eejit can hear their thick accents and know they'd be dragged off as spies. So often. I also hate when they cast random foreigner as specific foreigner, so the supposedly Spanish foreigner has a Farsi accent. This is very very prevalent in Swedish films I can tell you, where accent work is nil and the broad brush of prejudice traditionally swept with wide strokes.
