Do you eat ‘well’?

fetaccompli · 03/02/2024 17:39

I’ve been reading the various guidelines about eating well and want to see how MN measures up.

5 a day - definitely every day. Nearer to 9 or 10.
Processed meat limited to x2 a week - less good on this. We often will have bacon/sausage/pate/ham/salami/breaded chicken/fishfingers 3-4 in a week.
14 units alcohol a week - I don’t drink alcohol but DH definitely exceeds this
Fish x2 a week incl x1 oily - only once really and I’m trying to stop eating so much salmon as it’s so awfully farmed
Dairy x3 a day - probably 1 portion of milk in hot drinks and maybe some cheese
6-8 glasses of water - I’m bad at this but I do drink a lot of herbal tea and I think that counts
Red meat 350g week - always have more than this and there’s bowel cancer in my family so I will work on this.

How are the rest of you doing? Any aims to improve?

Lots of fruit and veg, probably equal to 8 portions
2-3l water/day, couple of coffees, no alcohol apart from a spritzer two or three times a year.
Mainly chicken, fish, occasionally pork, rarely beef or sausages/bacon
Rarely have bread, I prefer ryvita.
My weakness is cheese with salad, I love crisps too 🙄 but trying to stop the temptation!
Salad most days, occasionally a few chips.
I don’t have a big appetite, never eat breakfast.

I've just looked at my salmon packet - responsibly sourced Scottish salmon.

No mention of wild or farmed though. It's Sainsbury's just for point of reference. Can you responsibly source from a farm? I guess you can 🤷 How do I know?

Yes you can. You can also catch farmed cod from the Atlantic Ocean and breed a pig outside and then bring it immediately inside🙄. It’s all marketing rubbish.

Many of you may not know that almost all supermarket cod is now farmed.

Diet-wise, I concentrate on nutrient dense foods such as fish, nuts, dark chocolate, dairy. The occasional steak. I will rarely have a meal that’s mostly empty carbs such as vegetable soup and bread. I don’t eat much fruit/veg because my stomach is so messed up from stress that I can’t digest it. Also eat far too many artificial sweeteners. No alcohol.

I’ve always had a strong interest in nutrition and I do think it’s important but I firmly believe that anxiety and stress are far worse than a bad diet.

Itisnearlyspring · 04/02/2024 13:00

@JanglingJack It will be farmed if it is not stated otherwise.

What actually counts as a portion of fruit and veg, quantity-wise?
Tonight I'm making fish pie, and it has carrot, peas and spinach in it, plus the mash on top is 50/50 potato and sweet potato (according to the nhs sweet potato does count towards your 5 a day). But I'm not sure any of them are in big enough quantities to be a portion. There's also spring onion but definitely not enough to be a portion each.
To be honest I don't really count portions day to day - I consider this a healthy meal with a good amount of veg, so I'm happy. But I'm wondering about the people who eat 10 portions a day? Do you just think "yeah dinner had peas in it so that's 1 portion" or do you make sure that it hits a certain quantity?

It's 80g for fresh fruits and vegetables. I'd bet many people are saying "dinner had peas in it so that's a portion", yeah.

bakewellbride · 04/02/2024 14:11

I eat a healthy vegan diet, it's really important to me especially as I want to model a good diet to my children.

Hot water and lemon first thing.
Spinach and banana protein shake.
3 healthy, varied meals with lots of fruit, veg and plant based protein.
I eat pizza once a week and chocolate once a week, that's pretty much the only unhealthy stuff unless I'm at a party or something.
I drink lots of water. I have some tea and coffee with oat milk.
7 years teetotal.

Yesterday for dinner I ate a can of chickpeas so 240g so I guess that is 3 portions. The chickpeas were fried with lots of spinach and lemon so 4 portions

I also ate 1 carrot (probably just under 80g)
1 apple and 1 kiwi so 7 portions.

I had a green salad as part of lunch which had beetroot, mixed leaves, kale sprouts and saukercrat which I guess would be 2 portions weight wise.

So a total of 9 portions in the day.

I don't get enough calcium and don't really know how to increase dairy without eating fat

Loathe milk and cream too

I take a calcium tablet

Hubblebubble · 04/02/2024 15:54

@loverrr with farmed salmon, the process kills all of the wild salmon in the area. The idea behind farming fish was virtuous, to reduce overfishing of wild populations, but it had this unintended consequence. Plus the fish literally swim in their own waste. And the only reason farmed salmon are even pink is because a dye is added.

OctoblocksAssemble · 04/02/2024 16:05

5 a day, no chance, 2 max
Processed meat, probably 2 times a week, usually of the oven chicken variety. Some weeks it might be 4 times though.
Units of alcohol, I tend to buy low/no alcohol drinks, so vastly under this
Fish, no, maybe once a month
Dairy, yes, have that quite a lot
Glasses of water, maybe 4 per day? And 3-4 cups of tea/coffee
Red meat, once a week, twice max.

Surprised there's nothing on there about carbs, I'd fail there badly.

Penguinpairs · 04/02/2024 17:32

Spring unfortunately you can only count each fruit, vegetable or pulse once, so if you ate 20 apples that would still only be 1 portion.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 04/02/2024 17:36

Not badly... Apart from vegan chocolate!

Today I had;

Scrambled eggs, mushrooms and avocado
Home made chicken and veg soup
Steak with corn cob, broccoli and green beans
Protein shake made with soya, raspberries and a nomo cookie dough reindeer thing

That's a pretty average day, dinner is usually meat and three veg. Work days I tend to eat a punnet of blueberries and a bit more chocolate 😫Im giving it up for Lent!

I take a calcium tablet

30g of reduced-fat (nobody come for me; some of us have to balance calories with everything else and can't just eat with abandon) cheddar is just over 30% of the daily requirement of calcium, as is 200ml of milk. And then a big bowl of yogurt and kefir is just over 50%.

It's a total of 16g of fat, so not much. I eat this every day and eat 50g to 60g of fat a day.

You don't eat milk, but do you eat yogurt?

Always eat 5 a day, often more. Mostly vegetables, which I love - not a huge fruit fan and a lot of fruit doesn’t agree with my digestion.
Pescatarian so no red meat or processed meat. Fish only once a couple of weeks though because of the cost.
Hardly any dairy because I don’t like cow’s milk - have cheese in a meal once or twice a week. I have a lot of almond milk which has added calcium so hopefully that’s ok.
Don’t drink alcohol, probably don’t drink enough water.
My absolute downfall is chocolate, I eat too much and as a result my sugar intake is probably way more than advised.

Tilllly · 04/02/2024 18:49

@uhOhOP
Yes I eat yoghurt but they confound me half the time, there are so many!
But fat free doesn't impact on the calcium, does it?

Not really sure what kefir is

Tilllly · 04/02/2024 18:50

@Itisnearlyspring
That's interesting, never occurred to me to look outside dairy, thanks

Rosesanddaisies1 · 04/02/2024 18:52

Yes I eat similar to you but less processed meat. What about adding more lentils and beans in? Currently no booze as pregnant, and usually 1 decaf coffee. Lots of salads and soups, plain yoghurt and fruit; fruit and veg for snacks.

ALonelyPerson · 04/02/2024 18:57

My nan ate bacon and sausage every day. Lived to be 90. My uncle was vegetarian. Died of a brain tumor aged 48.

Nitesaredrawinin · 04/02/2024 19:04

Gosh we certainly don’t get our 5 a day or 30 a week, whichever it is. Hubby likes meat and two veg but does shifts so meals are all over the shop. Kids don’t like meat meat, only sausage and breaded chicken crap. One likes shepherds pie but hates spag bol. The other likes spag Bol hates shepherds pie. Absolutely no veg for one the other only eats carrots. No salad or fruit for either kids. I have a few cherry toms and an inch of cuc a day and definitely not enough water. 😳

This means absolutely nothing though in terms of statistics, does it?

Not really sure what kefir is

Reduced-fat cheddar has more calcium than the standard product. I find yogurt and kefir mixed together is a really good way to get calcium. I usually eat it for dessert. I just buy plain organic yogurt and plain organic kefir and eat it with some fruit.

Kefir is fermented milk. It's a yogurty product, a bit sourer than plain yogurt, I'd say. Added to yogurt it does not affect the taste and has health benefits.

EdgarsTale · 04/02/2024 19:47

-I eat at least 10 portions of fruit & veg a day
-Meat 2-3 times a week. Fish once. Mostly veggie.
-Very rarely eat red meat & try to avoid processed meat completely
-Not great with water-find it easier in the summer
-I don’t drink milk, but eat yoghurt every day. Cheese a couple of times a week.
-I eat far too much chocolate though

Tilllly · 04/02/2024 20:07

@uhOhOP
More reason for reduced fat cheese ☺️

I've looked up kefir but it's not recommended for immuno compromised I think, and I'm on chemo with a list of things like probiotics to avoid
(Relieved as it sounds horrid!!!)

bakewellbride · 04/02/2024 20:13

@Tilllly there is loads of dairy free chocolate out there so maybe she meant that
