Red bedroom

My son wants a red bedroom. Would you let a child choose a red bedroom? I worry that it wouldn't be a restful space and red would either be too bright or too dark.

I always wanted a red bedroom myself as a child as it was my favourite colour (still is) and I thought it would be cosy. My mother always said no to full red walls, though she did allow me dark red stripes with a lighter colour. I understand why now! But maybe you should just let children make their own decoration choices even if it's against your better judgment..

Does anyone have a red bedroom that they're happy with? I've googled pictures of red bedrooms and I find most of the images rather overwhelming. Could it look OK to have one red wall, maybe? It's a medium-sized north-facing bedroom.

If he wants a red bedroom and your ok with it do it.
I had a red bedroom with bright white shelves that looked lovely for a week.
But it was not me painted it white a week later perfect.
I also had an orange living room once.
I look back and cringe what was i thinking in my 20s i do not know.

Esgaroth · 01/02/2024 20:16

Well I suppose that's the thing - I'm not really OK with it. I think it would look too bright or too dark and not be a peaceful space for sleep.

Would you just say no?

My bedroom as a young teenager had black walls and a dark red ceiling and I loved it. I also love that my mom let me have it despite how much she didn't like it, allowing me to be myself after the many years before of pastels and 'restful' colours.

He is 6, though - I suppose if he was a young teenager I'd be more inclined to just let him do whatever.

What I'm saying isn't just about teenagers, it's about the fact that my tastes didn't change. I'd wanted those colours for many years and my room became a lovelier place for me to be when it was decorated in a way I liked.

Esgaroth · 01/02/2024 20:38

I was thinking maybe a compromise with a bit of bright red but not 4 bright red walls could satisfy his love for red while not being completely overwhelming.

I love red myself but I think I have more of an understanding of what a fully red room would look like than he does.

Have a search for gryffindor inspired bedrooms

There are a few which are cosy, luxurious.

Undethetree · 01/02/2024 20:42

There was a trend some time ago for painting dining rooms dark red and I thought it was lovely. I think it could work if:

The red is a more muted, rich colour rather than pillar box bright.
If you have a picture rail you could do red up to there and then white above.
Keep the ceiling white
Put some large, light coloured pictures on the walls to break it up
Large mirror opposite the window? (Altho whether a large sheet of glass is wise in a 6 year old boys room is a consideration!)
Light coloured rug on the floor

You could also paint one of the walls a different colour if he is open to that?

semideponent · 01/02/2024 20:43

I like a deep red: right now my bedroom is Preference Red (F&B).

In another house I painted the bedroom in Radicchio (also F&B).

They're both on the burgundy end of red. I think I preferred Radicchio. but I've liked both paints much more than blues/whites etc. And slept well in both.

frozendaisy · 01/02/2024 20:44

I painted our kids room the calmest green to inspire restful sleep.
Didn't seem to make the blindest bit of difference, they both want blue rooms now.

Which is also fine.

semideponent · 01/02/2024 20:47

The Christopher John Rogers collection at F&B might be good inspiration for colour mixing in a child's bedroom - it includes Romesco, which I'd call a "proper red".

Thelnebriati · 01/02/2024 20:58

I'd let him have a red room but put up lining paper and paint that so its easier to remove. It took several coats to cover Ds's choice of colour and its still showing.

Esgaroth · 01/02/2024 21:16

He might well go for some combination of red and blue as Spiderman colours. Then I think with a bit of white as well it could be cool, not adult boring and tasteful, but less intense?

Restful space? Lights off eyes shut, it’s all the same colour.

Let him! Honestly my DSIS had a black room I had a bight yellow with a red carpet. I had an orange kitchen in my last house. I love bold colour. No grey in my house.

Aquamarine1029 · 01/02/2024 21:25

At six I would get him lots of red things for his room, but I wouldn't paint the walls red.

WhenWereYouUnderMe · 01/02/2024 21:26

I don't understand the problem - unless he's sleeping with the lights on, what does it matter what colour the walls are once it's dark?

rainbowbee · 01/02/2024 21:30

I had a red bedroom. I loved it. My mother despised it. Anyway, passed all exams, went to uni, and somehow turned into a 40 year old assessing the merits of various pillow brands. I'm sure your son will be fine.

Esgaroth · 01/02/2024 21:30

I'm not opposed to bright colours at all, especially in a child's room. I'm certainly not talking about doing it grey! It's just red is such an extreme colour, I suppose because we class lighter shades of red as pink and say it's a whole separate colour. The pictures of fully red rooms I've seen remind me of when you close your eyes and the sun shines through your eyelids, just too much.He actually does go to sleep with his bedside light on but yes of course you can't see the colour once you are asleep. I do think colours can be restful or stimulating, but it's probably not a huge impact I concede.

We have 2 red walls and 2 grey/blue walls. I couldnt quite deal with 4 red walls

WhenWereYouUnderMe · 01/02/2024 21:34

Nope. Still don't get the concern 😂 If it's going to make him happy, just go for it.

Papillon23 · 01/02/2024 21:40

I've got a family member with a deep red sitting room, and I actually think it could work really well for a bedroom to be honest.

It would mean it was darker in the summer (which would aid sleeping) and you could get some deep burgundy curtains, and do goldish accents.

Honestly, red and blue and white sounds much less restful to me.

Just pick something that's not a primary red and it will be fine.

Esgaroth · 01/02/2024 21:44

The deep reds are nice, and they do feel cosy. I still think maybe not 4/4 walls but I will have more of a think about it. We've got a few months before we're actually doing any decorating.

OP posts:
Esgaroth · 01/02/2024 21:46

On the other hand I'm sure bright Spiderman red is what he means, rather than a more muted burgundy.

I was trying to figure out what "goldfish accents" were 😳
