Would you lend your friend your wedding dress?

Just that really. I've been looking for a wedding dress. I don't want to spend loads as I'm having a small intimate wedding. I've seen people that rent their own dresses out and I think it is great. It then got me thinking of all my friends who have been married and their dresses sat away.

So would you lend out your dress or do you feel too attached to it? If it got a bit of damage would it ruin the friendship etc?

I would for a really gd friend but no one I know wld fit into it 😂 It's a size 8 and altered length coz I'm a short arse. I did wear heels so maybe it would do up to 5ft5 with no heels.

It's the reason I didn't sell it as I'd have a very small range of potential customers.

I wouldn't be mad if it got damaged by accident you have to consider that when knowing someone else will be wearing it.

thefallen · 02/02/2024 19:36

It's so wasteful to have a dress that's only worn once. I'd love to lend mine to a friend.

Iwantamarshmallowman · 02/02/2024 19:39

I wouldn't, but only because I have a really bad track record for leading things out and not getting them back.

Look on Vinted - lots of wedding dresses in size 14

Middleagedspreadisreal · 02/02/2024 20:03

No

Worndownbyit · 02/02/2024 20:08

I'd be only too happy to loan my wedding dress to someone...I'd be flattered that they liked it enough.
(I'm a size 14 if you're interested 😉)

This thread has got me thinking. My wedding was 47 years ago and I can’t even remember what I did with the dress. I certainly don’t have it in my possession. I think it was left at my parents house. I’m wondering if they put it on a bonfire in the garden after my divorce 😂

Topsyturveymam · 02/02/2024 20:41

I sold mine - so no emotional connection to it. I liked the idea that another bride would get to wear it. That it wasn’t going to just be stuck in my cupboard.
The lady I sold it to said she couldn’t have afforded it new and was so pleased to get the dress she wanted within her budget. I wore it for about 7 hours, so was perfect after a dry clean.

Readytoevolve · 02/02/2024 21:43

No, but I wouldn’t lend anything of value or of sentimental value to anyone.

My experience is no good deed goes unpunished.

Completelydonechick · 02/02/2024 21:59

Don’t know! Depends if you were going to use it again I suppose!!🫢

Forestcantrun · 02/02/2024 22:20

My sister eloped so mine is just hanging there, I had hoped she would want my dress.
Did offer it to a friend but she ended up not getting married anyway. I’ll happily gift it to any friend who wants it.

Honestmama · 02/02/2024 22:23

Absolutely I would! My day was not about the dress and I would love to let someone who especially didn’t want to spend the ridiculous amounts, have my dress except I already gave it away 😹

VenusClapTrap · 02/02/2024 23:40

Gosh no. I’m normally pretty generous, but I couldn’t do that. Sorry. It’s too precious.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 31/01/2024 06:20

Yeah I would.

I ran 10km in mine with my husband in his suit on our ten year anniversary!

Fantastic, I love this!

Teenagehorrorbag · 03/02/2024 01:10

My dear friend who is Godmother to my kids, got married young at about 19. I married years later, and was about the same size so I wore her dress. It was gorgeous, and is still in the attic although DD is a much curvier build so won't ever wear it.

I love that my friend (who never had a DD of her own) let me have her beautiful dress. I would love someone else to use it again- the more the merrier! Anyone who wouldn't share after one day is selfish and weird, in my opinion.....

Teenagehorrorbag · 03/02/2024 01:17

So you'd be very welcome, if you are a tiny size 8 or 10 ( I am no longer....) - I can send pics? There are a few marks but no-one would notice. Its a traditional long sleeved slim fitting full skirted dress.....

I think second hand / sharing etc is totally sensible, but some bridezillas might disagree.....

Whatever you do, I hope you have a fab day and a lovely married life!

Amtheyest17 · 03/02/2024 10:50

I absolutely would! I’m never gonna wear it again - saying that despite cleaning mine was still trashed 😂

Southern1964 · 03/02/2024 11:34

I’d let someone use mine no problem. No emotional attachment whatsoever, and it was v. expensive

Polis · 03/02/2024 11:38

Mine is still in perfect condition as I hardly wore it on the day. The temperature was in the 30s and I couldn’t wait to get it off.

As a fellow size 8 shortarse I really struggled to find a second hand dress to fit so you never know!

Beautiful3 · 03/02/2024 14:41

Many wedding dresses are altered, to fit the body and height perfectly. I doubt you're going to fine one that fits you well. You're not going to be able to alter a borrowed dress. Oxfam do sell second hand dresses.

Whatatodo22 · 03/02/2024 22:15

Mine is if you want to borrow mine!

T1Dmama · 04/02/2024 09:11

My best friend bought hers on eBay she sent off her measurements and it was made to fit, it was beautiful. Think it was slightly over hundred pounds!! I paid for it as her present x

T1Dmama · 04/02/2024 09:16

ask on a local Facebook page… I’m sure someone will be more than happy to get rid of a dress, especially if they’re now divorced.
I’d let you use mine but I was tiny on my wedding day and it’s got red in it
My daughter will probably get mine altered and have it dyed and use as a prom dress lol

@BigDogEnergy I live in the south east so I guess we would have some charity shops that sell dresses. I know the local ones haven't had any in recently but that's not to say they don't get them in. Where was the charity shop?

Oxfam has a wedding dress shop in London & sells wedding dresses online too.

I know quite a few folk that have hit cheap but pretty ones from Etsy too.

I’ve never been a bride if I had I’d love to see my dress being reused & helping make great memories for a friend of mine.
